BookSmart

Can't get a connection to upload my book

I tried to upload my book last night, but when I go through the steps to order it, booksmart can’t make a connection to the internet (even though my connection is otherwise working fine – I can surf the net and am able to comment on the forum etc)

I’ve tried disabling the firewalls, to no avail. Is this just me and does anyone have any suggestions for what to do?  I’ve sent a message to Blurb help but it might be a day or two till I get a reply.

 Cheers

Gabrielle

I have had the same problem both on my work computer and my laptop at home. Even the computer whizzes in my life can’t help me. I end up taking the whole book on a memory stick to a friend who doesn’t have the same problems. But it’s a royal pain and sure takes a lot of the fun out of creating a book. Especially if you need it in a hurry.

Cheers,

Kevin

I am having the same problem! EXACTLY the same problem.. and I am using a Mac OS 10 .5 (Leopard). I am tossing up downloading booksmart and trying it on my macbook (tiger) but seems like a lot of hassle. I too am going to ask for help. Hopefully someone can enlighten me as to which box to tick somewhere.

I had the same issue.

Finally, I was able to solve it by adding BookSmart as a "trusted application" to my Anti-Virus software (Kaspersky).  The moment I did this, the connection was established.

It was not my firewall as the helpdesk suggested…

Funny thing is that I didn’t have to do this with version 1.8…

I am also having a similar issue and it looks like a connection speed issue.  Obviously internet connection at my end is OK however connecting to Booksmart takes forever.  I did leave it overnight and eventually it had conncted and processd and started the upload but the status bar showed no progress.  Trying again this morning and it has gone through the same cycle (after about 1 hour) and now it is uploading but seems to be making no progress or its going at a snail’s pace.  My book is only 79MB so I would not expect it to show no progress on the actual upload.  I am also using version 1.9 for MAC  .  Had no problems on the previous version.  Is there a problem with the receiving server?

im having the same problem, and while they says it a connectivity problem, its a problem on there end. I did a test of running a bittorrent at the same time, on very low speed (5k up,5k down) to see if I really was loosing connectivity and my computer wasnt with the general internet, just in the uploading process of this book, it crapped out 5 times on me last night and its only about an 80meg book

Anybody knows what is really going on here?

I couldn’t resolve my connection problem on the laptop, and I ended up exporting my book to a thumb drive and taking it to work – it uploaded from my work computer with no trouble (and amazingly quickly). I was surprised as I work at a university which has a good security system and windows firewall etc – this didn’t cause any problems.

If you are still struggling to connect, it might be worth trying to export to another computer, just in case.

I have the same problem and tried all PCs and networks available to me (read more here)

Maybe someone can help me and do the following:

1. Download my book from my server (132MBytes)
2. Upload the book into my account (I’ll provide you with a temporary password)

I am really desperate…

Thanks

I have received some help from the blurb team. I have tried everything they have suggested—still no luck. I now have a senior tech helping but have not heard back in four days. The postage is going to really hurt…. US to Australia – right at the deadline! arrgh One can only hope it WILL arrive before Christmas.

I would ask tho.. that help come for Mac and PC… I have a mac and the PC guide isn’t helping me and now I am waiting (4 days and counting) for the mac equivlant.

But the team are being as helpful as they can be :) They have been good

Hey Ben …. I’m in the same boat as all these folks. Multiple attenmpts lead to freezes … Your Sara suggested disbabling Windows Firewall and shutting down virus checker but not luck—and I used AVG which seems to have no "trusted site" feature like that used but someone else on this thread … I hope you guys can figure this out soon as everyone has Xmas projects on the go!

cheers Jerry

This just in: I tried again and got my 200 meg hardcover through and ordered! How? As suggested I turned off my virusscan, restored the Windows Firewall but taught it to consider Blurb.com a trusted site (or whatever the exception term  was)—either Blurb.com has done something in the past few hours or this did he trick. (I see there’s a 1.9.2 release of the software. I wonder if that also might help?)

I am not able to connect with Blurb. The message I get is "Error:Value too long for type character varying (255)" I turned off my virus detection.

I see many people are not able to download. Are we being told why this is happening or getting any advice from Blurb?

When I would try to upload with Windows XP SP2 with 1.9.1 and 1.9.2 I would get an error saying my Internet connection was not working "init 0".  My husband ’s company is my ISP and so he tried bypassing our Linksys router to do direct to the DSL modem and was still able to surf but not get BookSmart to upload.  So he remembered he was transparently sending our web traffic through a proxy server for parental controls.   He took that off and then we were able to send our book lickity split!  So, what he recommends that the Blurb software engineers to do is to run the upload process on some port other than TCP port 80 and then these firewalls will not be so likely to get upity when you upload.   (he says I have to say: your actual mileage will vary, see store for details, some restrictions may apply, free advice you get what you pay for).

see my post at http://forums.blurb.com/forums/7/topics/1832

Basically if your book has a Title on the Title page that is more than 255 chars try shortening it…
