"Unable to read image" in imported Booksmart file on Mac

Hi,

I’m running Blurb Booksmart v.3.3.1 on an older iMac with 1 GB RAM. Tried to import a Booksmart file I created last year from a backup external hard drive, but when it opens all but three of the images come up as “Unable to read image”. I believe when I created the file I imported the images from a CD or a folder on the desktop of another computer. I’ve read several threads describing similar problems, but they all at least a couple years old and I have no idea if the responses are still relevant. Does anyone know why this might be happening, and if I can fix it without having to reimport all of the original JPEG files?

Thanks for your help!

Go to your book’s folder, and open the library directory within it. There will be files with four different extensions:

.original
.screen
.thumb
.zoom

The file names will be long, meaningless stretches of letters and numbers, like

0aa91909-cb2c-4653-88fa-34d536c5cb8b.original

Click on one of the files with the .original extension and hit the space bar. Does the file display on the desktop in a gray box? If so, that means the computer at least can read it. If it doesn’t, the file is corrupted in some way. If the file does display, try dragging them out to the desktop, and then re-importing them into your book project. Perhaps that will work. If not, they are corrupted somehow and you are probably out of luck.

If they did come from a CD, perhaps they are locked. Click on one, and select, and use the menu File > Get Info. If the file is locked, you will see a checkmark next to a box that says “Locked.” Click on this to unlock he file. Repeat with all your other files.

Good luck.
