BookSmart

Bookmaking is WAY too slow

I created a book using the previous version of the software and it was great!  I loved the process, the book turned out wonderful.

BUT!  I downloaded the newest version for my blog book (140 pages) and the software is way too slow.  I mean it takes 20 seconds in between actions to figure out what I am doing.  There is no way that I can work this way and will be trying another book publishing service because I can’t handle the slowness of the new application.

Blurb…this is a very serious problem.  You’ve lost an otherwise happy customer because of your new buggy software.

Is it possible to have both the old and new versions of the Booksmart software on your machine at the same time? I am concerned with the reports I am hearing about the new version, but would like to try it for myself—if I have the option of abandoning it for the earlier version should it not meet my needs.

Hi Mindspan,

If you’d like, you can install the new version of BookSmart to a different folder, say BOOKSMARTNEW. Then, the installation won’t overwrite the old program.

From what I’ve seen, the new software improves performance on optimal machines, but may challenge older machines a bit more. Upgrading without getting rid of the old software may be a good way to play it safe. However, you’ll want to upgrade eventually in order to keep the program current and synched with changes we make on the printing end of the process. The best time to upgrade is always before starting a new project.

Best regards and Happy Blurbing,
Jeremy

Jeremy,

Why does Blurb not want to fix the new  software so we can continue to create books we love. I really miss creating my books but the new software is way to slow. I have done the Tech help and there is no work around until you fix the new software.

Please, Please fix the new software so we all can get back to work.

Im very new to blurb, I found out about blurb through smugmug. Yesterday , I ordered my first book. Im using a Macbook /OS10.4/ computer. The booksmart software is very slow for me. The book I made is only 22 pages, but took too much time to make..

Im considering using blurb for my engagement / wedding proof books.

I hope that there will be an update I really wanted this to work out .

Thanks

Well I downloaded the 1.9 version and quickly found myself going back to the earlier one. 1.9 is FAR too slow. Please fix!

Hi,

I too am finding the software extremely slow. I am not sure if they problem is me or the software, but this is the first piece of software that I have experienced that runs so badly.

I am experimenting with cheaper alternatives to ASUKA books and starting with the blurb books, but with the software running so slowly I might have to move onto another alternative. I really like the way that the books look on the web site and would love to give them a try, please let me know what could be causing this problem for me.

Running, dual core 1.8 Ghz
2 GB RAM
Windows XP

Thanks
Chris

This program is horrendous. There is no way i can waste time creating a book with Blurb. Aside from the program being absurdly slow, it cannot view photos in Aperture 2.0. Was hoping this was a good alternative to Apple but it isn’t even close.

Howdy,

Thought I would link this thread to another one. The thread this link points to describes an unofficial performance workaround thought up by a Blurb author. We can’t endorse the workaround, but I have not been made aware of any serious problems this solution might cause. Images may appear to turn purple in BookSmart, but any such images will print normally in your bound and finished book:

Best regards and thank you for your patience as we work to improve BookSmart Beta,
Jeremy

yeah this is disappointing at best! my mac is only seven months old and has no performance issues until i try to use booksmart.  :-(  i’m superbummed. i really wanted to make a book but to call the experience "frustrating" is an understatement.

I’m bummed also. I had planned on using blurb to do book projects with my photography students.  I wanted to work on a book at home first and wondered why it was so slow until I looked at the system requirements,  my 400mhz processor and 512mb of ram is sufficient for Indesign and Photoshop CS2 but just won’t cut it for Blurb :(.  Wish I could afford to keep up with geeks but on a teacher’s salary. Ce la vie. I wonder if there is an older less ram and processor intensive BookSmart we could down load.

i too am hoping perhaps someone still has an older version of booksmart they could offer.  ANYONE?

i have  seven month old 2GHz Intel core duo Mac with a gig of ram – like you, i run CS3 and Office 2008 smoothly, as well as some music production/editing software – and it floats like a dream – yet i can’t run this clunky little program well. it is very obviously the software that is crap, not my computer.

i’m bummed that i’m a third of the way through a project as i’ve begun looking at alternatives and obviously, i’m going to have to start over from scratch elsewhere.
