BookSmart

Different languages and special characters

Can Blurb books accomodate special language charecters? I want to create a book of Polish poetry. Some letters and sounds require special characters.

Hello Jpeter,

BookSmart can handle the special characters you send to it long as your computer can handle the font and characters.

One suggestion would be to double check the characters close-up in the preview mode, to make sure that they look accurate. The preview does show how the characters will look when they are printed.

Can’t wait to see your poetry book in the bookstore!

My experience suggests otherwise, at least for titles. Booksmart displays characters with diacritical marks just fine (like a lower-case “e” with an acute accent like in Les Miserables), but when I upload to the web site, the title of the book transforms to a combination of copyright symbols and tildes around the “e” in question, and the acute accent is nowhere to be found. I’ve taken it out for now, but FYI on something that would be nice to have, since otherwise I suffer from comments impugning my reputation as a speller. ;-)

Kevin, was the problem with the fonts on the cover of the actual book or was it just in the title of the book in the bookstore?

The latter is a known problem as the Blurb server cannot have all possible fonts installed on it and the generation of the web page is restricted to those fonts that are installed and it has to convert from the font you used for your title in your book  to a font available on the server. That is where the issue appears to arise..

You can change the title, sub-title, ec that is displayed in the bookstore without actually changing those in the book itself.  You can do that in the Edit Book Settings tab you’ll find if you select the book from your home page. Blurb appears to use Times New Roman for the titles, etc so you can use Windows Character Map to select your required characters from that font or the Alt-number combinations if you know them to enter the title with accents, etc.  (You’ll find those combinations here).  A Mac will surely have something similar.

I have changed the title of my latest book (It has some problems so I will be uploading a new version on Thursday so it won’t cause me any problems) to show that this is possible, you’ll find that book here.

…..Tony

p.s. if you are reading this post a few days after posting I will have deleted the book referred to, so you will have to take my word for it. Sorry.
