Yellow icon on bottom of small icon indicating that theres too much text
When I type in text on the page and the larger page shows on preview that it’s inside the lines permitted, on the bottom of the page showing the small icons of the page, it shows the yellow icon indicatihg that there is too much text on the page even though the preview page the text is before it gets to the end of the page edge. should I ignore that. I try changing the font to a smaller size to the yellow does not go away. Please help me.

If it looks O.K. in Preview it’ll print O.K. There is a known bug that is sometimes the cause of this. The other (I suspect more common) cause is having trailing blanks or an extra carriage/newline charatcter at the end of the text. This does not display but will be used in calculating whether the text will fit. You can check this out by clicking in the text then choosing Edit….Select All or Ctrl-A on a PC, that will highlight all the text. It is then easy to see if there is anything after the last of your characters. If so just delete them. .........Tony

I think there’s more to it than that. I agree that if it shows in Preview mode it ususally prints fine, but it is a monumental pain in the but having to check continually. Another issue is that if I see an error in a text column, place the cursor next to the error (lets say I am removing a letter), click to activate the text frame and then hit delete, the cursor has usually gone somewhere else in the box and removed a different letter. You MUST activate the box first and Then place the cursor..

Thank you for your reply, Tony…I did not know how to find this page and I finally found it I’m glad to know that if the preview page looks good that I should ignore the warning about too much text. My other problem that I want some pages to show as a single page and other pages to face each other. How do you do that? When I get to edit a page, I click on the little box on the bottom to view it as a single page but I can’t get my facings pages to do that and I get 2 facing pages that do not match. When I try to print my pages, The running bars show up to indicate that it’s printing, but after waiting forever, all I get are the pages with the background colors but the page is blank. It does not show the Text. I have sent in for help in the tecnical dept. and the answer is that some of the printers do not work…Well, I don’t think that’s good enough. They should do something to fix that problem. My book will be 8X10 hard cover with 80 pages…I wish I could see what the pages would look like before I order it. I don’t know how they process the books once they are dowloaded, but from what they say is they print what they see and do nothing to warn you that your book will not come out good. You won’t know that until you receive it. Are you happy with the books you have written? I hope you reply.

Hi again MIllie! Can help on some points, but not all. Printing first. I haven’t had the problems with pages appearing blank, but printing does take forever and often does not finish. What I have done is downloaded some free software called CutePDF.That ‘pretends’ to be a printer but creates a PDF file of your book instead . There is still a BookSmart problem where the page of the book is smaller than the page in the PDF (this can be a printing issue as well). I can then open the PDF and view the book that way to proof-read. Saves a lot of ink. Again it is very slow so I either set it going and go to bed, or more usually just "print" the pages I have edited to review those. You can get that software here. Slightly messy to install as you need some additional software but it tells you about that – it’s all free. You can then, if you want, simply print that PDF if you are more comfortable with proof-reading on paper. That should get round your BookSmart print problem. But to give you a slightly warmer feeling, I have published twice now and the books exactly matched the previews, no issues at all. I might possibly use CutePDF one more time, just to give me confidencs but I probably don’t need to. I am very happy with the quality of the book. It is still work-in-progress but I have finished the photographic part of the book and wanted to see what that turned out like before I ploughed on with the rest. But I lied there, I’m not very happy with the book, I’m ecstatic!!!! I’m not sure I really understand your first question. If you click on the facing pages icon (next to the single page one) you will see two facing pages. You can tell that by looking at the page numbers, facing pages are always odd-even, e.g. 30 and 31 are facing. Ii might be that you have to insert an extra (blank?) page to get the book in step so to speak. I have had to insert a blank page at the end of some chapters to ensure the next chapter has the correct facing pages (I have quite a few photos that span two pages, so that matters!) Your book will come out better than the preview you do, whether that be on the display in BookSmart or on your printer at home, that I can assure you. Whilst you are in Edit mode, when you are in Preview mode and when you print locally BookSmart uses low-resolution versions of your photos to keep the local file size down and thus keep the response time reasonable. When you come to Publish your book they will upload the high resolution photos that you imported and use those to print the book rather than the low-quality ones you see on the display. You will see some complaints in these forums, but Blurb have stated that printing problems occur just a few % of the time. If this happens they will happily reprint your book. There have been lots of posts with prople happy with their books. I suspect 99% of people are. .........Tony

Hi Tony: I am almost ready to order my book. I’m just waiting for a few more pictures from my son when he was in the service. I asked this question on Help and although I read the answer I want to check with you first to make sure I understand the answer. The people that will be ordering my book, do they have a choice to order a soft cover or hard cover? Will my book be printed in either cover upon request? My book will be Standard 8X10 size. Can I order a soft cover first to see how it turned out and if I’m staisfied order a hard cover next? There is quite a difference in price between a soft cover and a hard cover and the people that will be ordering the book will be the ones in the book, friends and family. I want to know that they have a choice in ordering a soft cover and a hard cover. I want to thank you so much for answering my questions. You made me feel so much better when you told me that if the page looks fine on Preview that it will come out the same in the book. Also about facing pages and single pages. You told me to put in a blank page in between the chapters or to move the pages to face each other. I get a message when I press the order by mistake telling me that I have pages blank…and pages missing. will they print the blank pages and count them in the numbering of the pages? I really am grateful for your help and will appreciate your response. Or any other person that want to answer my questions. Thank You

Can I make another book with a different title and less pages just to see how it comes out and still keep my original book to download when I want to order it after I receive the book with less pages?

Hello Millie; Your answers (hopefully…)... YES: You can set-up your book so that buyers can decide themselves whether to order soft-cover, hard-cover, or, the new ImageWrap… YES: You can oder what you want, and in whatever order you wish; softcover or hardcover first or last etc. The "Blank page" warning message is there simply to alert you to that fact, because they will be "printed" and you will pay for those blank pages… they’re all counted as a part of the page-count… And finally… to your last post – YES you can do a "File", "Save a Copy as" in BookSmart. Make sure you give the "new" book a different file name, and then re-work it as you wish. This will initially give you a complete duplicate of your book, so the original is maintained… Hope that helps; Lee

Hi Lee and Tony: Thank you so much for your replies. They really make me feel so much better. I know that most of these answers are in FAQ but I always want to check with a writer before I’m convinced. I went ahead and made another book with a different title. I ordered it in a soft cover and it has 38 pages instead of the original complete book that I plan to order after I receive the book I just ordered. Now I have another question???? I received a message when I ordered the book that my book will stay in the store just 15 days and then it will be removed. Do they wait until the book is shipped to me to start counting the days it will be in the book store or as soon as they receive my order? The book I just ordered was just to see how it turned out, especially the pictures that I downloaded into the poetry pages. The original longer version of my memoris will have a different cover. When I download the longer version, I will design the different cover and download it together with the pages. I will be ordering the complege book with a hard cover to keep for myself and give to my daughter as a gift. My delivery date will be June 17. I am so excited and nervous to see how it turns out. The short version has the Title "A Time to Remember My complete book will have the title of "Memories in Poetry" "When my complete book is in the book store, will the persons ordering the book order it from there? What if they take longer than 15 days to order the book and the book no longer shows up in the book store? How then will they be able to order the book? I see that you, Lee and Tony are late birds like me…I finally figured out that in order to get your replies, I have to click on to the question that I submitted. I just kept waiting to get a message that I had a reply waiting for me in the Question section….DAAAAAA Thanks so much for your help.

Hi Millie! Not late birds, we both live in the UK an 8 hour time difference with Apple Valley so as we rise you are just going to bed. So you get a quick reply if we are up early, but If I lie in like I did today to you have to wait. I hope you are not still up waiting? The 15 day limit is only for those people who do not order a copy of there book when they upload its. If a book is not purchased within that 15 days, then it is deleted from the BookStore. Blurb make their money from selling books (as you know the software is free) and they make no money giving people free storage in their book store, hence the limit. But as you ordered a copy when you uploaded it you will have no problems, it will be kept in the book store for at least a year. When you come to order your complete book your family will order from the Blurb bookstore just as you did. If you order a copy for yourself at the time you upload it it will be there for at least a year. If you don’t want a copy you will need to nag the family to buy a copy within 15 days. I know how you are feeling, I(‘m always excited when I’m waiting for a book to arrive for the first time. Regards, ......Tony

Hi Tony: I was not aware that you lived in the UK. I thought that you lived in the United States. It’s great to be able to communicate with some one so far away. It finally dawn on me to click on to your photo and read your profile. Thanks for the information on BookSmart having my book in the book store if I purchased the book for at least one year. I broused through the books in the book store and saw that there a few books of Poetry about mothers and daughters like mine. Although it’s more than that. It is also a Love story on how two people after being married for 34 years decided to part ways and after 13 years, destiny brought them back together again on the last chapter of their lives. That is my Love story. I see that you will be making a book about your mother, I’m sorry she has passed away. I decided to make my own book about my life to leave to my children before my memory starts to fade and I won’t remember my past. Most of my life story I have written in poetry and pictures and part of my story will be written in plain dialog. The people that will be buying my book will be just family and friends, I suppose. I do not want to make a profit so the price will be what I paid for the book. Thanks again for your help. Regards, Millie

Hi Tony: I just received my book with just 38 pages just to test it out. I wanted to see how different fonts, color of pages and pictures came out before ordering my complete book. I was very pleased with the book. Now I know what fonts looks good and especially the color on the pages. Some colors came out to dark, so I’m making all my pages in light colors and using just 4 different colors as background. You were right when you said if the page looks good on the preview that it will come out good in the book. I now do not have to worry about seeing those yellow warnings on the pages telling me that I have too much text. The pictures came out better than the ones I downloaded on the pages. I am so happy to know that I can just download my book without worry. The only thing that I was not sure of was how to name my book in making a copy. When I hit copy, it has the title that I chose in the box and did not know what to put in the box or what file to put it under. Thanks for telling me that I could name the file BookSmart. I will do that when I make a coypy of my finished book.. I do have another question…What does "Import" mean…Where can you import your book to? What is the difference between "copy" and Import? Thanks again for your help. Regards, Millie

Hi again MIllie! I’m happy for you, it’s a great feeling when you see your first book back, isn’t it?. File A Copy As takes all the hundreds of files that make up your book, duplicates them all in a new folder in the BookSmartData folder and you then have a new book that you can immediately start work on with nothing else to do. It will have a new name as well, but it is up to you to change the title if you want to. Import Book goes together with Backup/Export Book. If you select Backup/Export Book BookSmart gathers all those hundreds of files and packages them all into a single file that is easy to copy somewhere safe for backup. e.g. an external disks drive or a DVD (a CD is rarely big enough). You can do this for safety reasons, in case you make a mess of or lose your book, or you can do it to pass a copy to another person to work on or between two computers (I used this to copy my book to my laptop when I went away for a few days to get some peace and quiet to work on my book, then copid it back again in the same way when I got back home) To make use of that exported copy you need to do an Import Book when it will then extract all the individual files and recreate the folder in BookSmartData ready for you to work on again. You cannot open that exported/backup copy by choosing Open Book from the File menu. It will be imported with the same name as when you exported it, it is not a way to copy a book and give the copy a differet name. In other words it will overwrite any book with the same name, so it is a way to go back to a previous version of the book. Backup/Export does not delete your book, it just takes a copy in a form that is easier to move around. I tend to do a File Backup/Export Book once a week to an external disk drive for safekeeping, just in case my computer breaks. That happened to me when a lightning strike chased up my phone line and burnt out the innards of my PC so I’ve learnt my lesson on taking backup copies of my data and putting that disk in another room, ideally it should be in another house, then it’d be really safe.. Hope that helps. .......Tony

Hi Tony: It’s been awhile since I last read your reply to me. I tried saving my book and I gave it a new name, My problem is that I can’t find the file once I save it. When I first click on jto BookSmart the list of the books are there even the one I saved so it shows as a duplicate. I guess that is where I will find my book all the time without searching for the file I saved it in. Anyway, I still have not downloaded my book because I’m still waiting for some pictures from my son. He will be visiting me July12th and he will bring them with him. My question is that on the "Footnote"at the bottom of the page, I have a choice as to number the pages or put in a subtitle.I chose subtitle because I like to put in Quotes on the footnotes. However, I thought that after that I could put in the page numbers but when I try, it deletes the Quotes and just shows the page numbers, What happens if I just have the Quotes and do not show the page numbers, will they automatically put them on during the printing of the book or will the book not have page numbers. I wish I could have both the quotes and the page number. Is there a way I could do that? On the Head of the pages I have the titles and I can’t put the page number there as well.If I just put the quotes, I guess I can’t put in a page as INDEX if I can’t put in the page numbers on the pages. Please let me know what to do. Thanks….I hope you did not give up on me and no longer look for the posts on this page. Millie

Hi again Millie, good to hear from you! Up late again I see. I tend not to go looking for my book files, as long as BookSmart can find it and open it I’m happy. BookSmart can’t help you do what you want to do. There is only one way that I know of and it will be messy and very longwinded. Build the book with your quotes and forget about page numbers until it is finished. Then comes the boring bit. Go tp gae 1 and type in 1 in the footer, then go to page 2 and type in 2, then go …..well you get the idea. It’s even messier than that as you probably want the page number in the same place (e.g. at the outer edge) each time. The only way to do that is by entering the right number of blanks between your quote/subtitle and the book number until it looks O.K. Many of my pages are full-page photos and I can’t put page numbers on those in any way using BookSmart, so at the moment I’m planning on having NO page numbers. It does mean I can’t have an index at the back and I’d quite like one. When I’ve finished the book I’ll review that decision. But I have still put in a contents page at the front to let people know what is in the book. It would be better with page numbers though. You can see that page if you look at my book preview. <font size="2"><font size="2" color="#0000ff">http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/invited/175127/3e5d599f912c12360baac59e93f75906</font> </font>I won’t give up on you Millie, I enjoy our exchanges. Hi Tony: Thanks for your quick reply…I decided to put the quotes under the last sentence of the page itself and this way I could use the footnote for the page numbers. I don’t have that many quotes anyway. I clicked on to your book and the birds are just beautiful. Did you take the pictures of the birds yourself? It must be wonderful to be able to travel to different parts of the world.. If you would like to take a look at my short book that I made just to see how it came out, go to Book Store and on the right hand side choose "Poetry" and then type in the box above "A TIME TO REMEMBER." when you see the cover of my book, click on to the cover, and you will get another page with the picture of my book and click on the bottom of the book "BOOK PREVIEW" and when my book appears, click on to the pages and they will open and you could see some of the poems that I wrote. The poems that I wrote have to do with what was happening at that time in my life. I do not know how to send you the direct link so you have to find my book the long way.,The complete book that I am still working on will have dialog as well, telling my story. This sample book helped me in changing the colors of the pages and font to make my complete look better. It will be titled "Memories in Poetry. I will let you know when it has been published. My niece could not wait for the complete book and she ordered the short book. When someone buys your book, how do you find out that your book has been sold "Where do you look for that information? I’m not making a profit on the book, I’m just charging what they charge to make the book. Let me know what you think of the short book. I like hearing from you too….I feel like I have made a good friend. Millie

Hello Millie. Your book looks great. There are some really beautiful poems (and two beautiful ladies!). I particularly liked the opening one where you have twinned the verses with photos of Cindy at that age., that was a good idea. That you have been writing poetry to her all those years and still have copies is great, this is going to be a wonderful present for her. Has she seen any of it yet? Or is it going to be a surprise? I loved "Free at Last" Yes, I took those photos. I had wanted to travel to the Galapagos since I was in my 20s, then last year an insurance policy I had taken out 25 years ago matured on my 60th birthday. It would have been so easy to re-invest the money or spend it on the house but I decided to follow my dream and headed off to Ecuador and spent 3 weeks photographing wildlife. FIrst time I had ever spent a holiday just taking photos. The book is my record of that trip. The wildlife photo section is complete and now I’m well into the travelogue, should be finished by the end of July. I’ll let you know when. Now to your question. I’ve never sold a book so don’t know where you should look! The FAQ says to look at your sales page, but as I haven’t sold any I haven’t got a sales page so can’t help you find it. Sorry! Lee….......can you (or anybody else) help? .......Tony

Hi Millie; "When someone buys your book, how do you find out that your book has been sold "Where do you look for that information?" Although I haven’t sold any books (all mine are private), when I set-up my first test, I also set-up a sales test, just to see how things worked at Blurb… When you logon to Blurb and go to your home page, scroll down the page and you will some sales data boxes… See the following partial screen-shot; that will demonstrate where to look… Hope that helps; and good luck with your book… Cheers; Lee

HI Tony: I’m glad you liked my short book. In my completed book there will be all the poems that Cindy wrote to me as well during the years. She also wrote some personal poems of when she was in a low place in her life with her marriage. She is a much better poet than I am. The book will be a surprise. I wanted to give it to her for her birthday on July 12, but I’m still waiting to receive some pictures from family to finish the book. You are a fantastic photographer..The pictures of the birds are so beautiful and look so real. I give you so much credit for following your dreams and being able to see them come true. It’s quite an accomplishment. Your friend, Millie

HI Lee: Thank you so much for showing me how to find where I could see where by books were sold. I followed your instructions and you were right, they should have a better way of showing people how many book were sold in numbers instead as a graphic chart with bars. Well, at least I see that there is a blue bar indicating the date someone bought my book. Thanks so much for your help. I scrolled down to see all the post and I see that you help so many people answering their questions. What a guy!!!! I clicked on to the picture of the photo you display for yourself but It did not give your profile. What location are you from. I’m a woman, so I’m very curious to know where people are writing from.. Thanks Again for your help. Cheers, Millie

Hi Millie; You’re very welcome… always glad to be of help where possible… Tip – in case you didn’t notice… The first page of the "Book Metrics" is ony a page-view graphic – not a "sales" graphic. You need to view the two other tabs at the side to see actual sales & profits! I am located in the UK – "Home Counties" – about 3 miles West of central London. My avatar (picture) used to be the Union Flag (which was a bit of a give-away to me being a Brit), but when I found that old ‘photo I changed it… Mind you, since it was taken many, many moons ago, I can’t remember who the kid was now! Anyhow, good luck with your book… Cheers; Lee

Hello Lee: Another Brit like Tony…Great…I have never been to London…I live in Apple Valley, California. It’s in High Desert…Today was 107 degrees. No Humidity so you don’t sweat as much. Ahhhhh…. 107F, no humidity…. beautiful! BUT, I hope you’re not in the wild-fire risk-areas! They’re BAD this year!!! I know (and love) California well. I spent a number of years working in San Mateo, just south of San Francisco, and made the most of travelling around the state quite a bit… Been a few years now since we were last there, but it’s on the list for a return visit at some stage… London this morning is 57F, grey & wet & the forecast is for another wet summer! (I’m seriously thinking about a move to Arizona!!!!) Cheers; Lee

Hi Lee: It’s good to know that you have lived in California. The fires are in Northern CA Big Surf got the worst of it. The whole town had to be evacuated. Since I live in the desert, there are not to many trees to burn here. If you move to Arizona, I guess you know that it’s even hotter there than where I live. The heat wave it over now and it;s been just in the 90"s. It’s not too bad at that temperature. Have you looked at my sample book It’s just 30 pages for now. I made it just to see how the photos and fonts came out. Now I know where I have to make the changes on background colors and font size. If you scroll up this page, you can see where to find it on the post I sent to Tony. Cheers, Millie

Hi Tony: Well, I should be downloading my book by the first week in August. Eveytime I go back to proof read the pages, I always find something I have to change or add. I’ll be so nervous when I download it. I pray that it comes out just like the pages show up on "Preview". I’m still working on the cover trying to find the right background color and font color. Hi, Tony and Lee: I changed my photo. This was taken on July 12, 2008 at my daughter’s birthday party.

Hi Tony and Lee: I finally published my book and I have received it. I am very embrassed because I missed 2 errors and I don’t know if I am allowed to correct them and download the book again. Have any of you had the same thing happen to you and if so can you tell me if you were able to correct the errors. I sent them an E-mail asking them that question and I am waiting for their response. I have not heard of either of you for such a long time. I hope you will read this message soon. My book can be found in the book store under the title of "Memories in Poetry" for a preview.

|
Hey Millie, good to hear from you again. Hope all is well? Missing errors is VERY easy. I just cannot effectively proof read on the screen at all, I seem to see what I meant to write rather than what I actually wrote (if you see what I mean). I find it so much easier on paper. All you need to do is correct your couple of errors and upload and publish your book again. It will not replace your existing book in the Bookstore as Blurb do not support an "update" mechanisms, so you will end up with a "new" book in the store. It is then up to you to delete the old book (but be very careful which one you delete, they will look just the same! Check the Published Date). Then you will have to purchase a copy of your "new" book. The book has come on leaps and bounds since I saw your first trials. Lots more photos (including a naked cowboy ! – you’re a naughty pair) plus the poems from your daughter to you. Congratulations are in order. Well done Millie. Best regards, ........Tony

Hi Tony: Thanks for your reply….I am so glad that I could correct the errors by just uploading the book again after I correct the errors. The strangest thing happened…when I printed the page of a poem my grandson wrote to his Mom and Dad, I added "By and his name". his last name was spelled correctly on my printed page and I was shocked when the spelling of his last name was completely different when I received the book. I then opened to that page on Booksmart and saw his last name mispelled just like in the book… Oh well, I can’t understand how that happened….but like you said strange things can occurred. I sent Blurb an E-mail asking how to correct the errors and they told me to correct the errors and to make sure that I deleted the book with the errors first from Blurb before I uploaded the book again, I know that I will have to buy the corrected book again. My grandson will not forgive me for mispelling his name so I will wait for the new book to then give it to him as a gift. Other than that, I am happy how it came out. If you think that the naked cowboy was naughty, you should see the one where he told us to turn around and when they took the photo, he had his hand on each of our butts. We did not realize it because he actually did not touch us, it just seemed that way on the photo. Oh well, at my age it’s good to be naughty some times. Cheers, Millie .
