Low Resolution Warning - 100% Trustworthy?

3 situations, but all related:

1. I have placed photos in photo boxes that are actually larger than the original picture, but I do not get any warning. Will it still print / look OK? Many of the pictures I’m using were scanned in at 300 dpi. (4 to a page and then edited / cropped in iPhoto)

2. I received a low resolution warning and barely zoomed out on the picture and the alert went away. Is the warning that sensitive? I’m assuming that if there is no low resolution warning – it will print and look great.

3. Not all my pictures meet the pixel recommendations provided in the photo boxes. But I do not receive a low resolution warning. Again – look & print OK?

Hello mbassokc;

1. YES. As long as the warning sign does not pop-up, then BookSmart reckons your image is at a good enough resolution for printing. (You do know that you DON’T have to fill the container if you don’t want to??? You can zoom the image to whatever size you want within the container…)

2. YES. The image warning sign pops-up when it gets down to about 150dpi. So, if you were hovvering around that mark, then it would appear to be sensitive… There has to be a cut-off point somewhere and 150 seems to be it… BUT, see below…

3. Again, if you don’t get the warning sign then BookSmart reckons you’re good to go…

HOWEVER, the one caveat on all of this is that these warning signs ONLY affect image resolution, They cannot, of course, indicate that the image itself is good enough to print at a low resolution! That’s only a call that YOU can make.

Best way to do so is to do a "Preview" (button bottom right) at a decent zoom setting. If it looks OK in Preview mode, then generally it will be OK when printed.

Good luck;

Lee

Lee-

 Thanks for confirming my gut feelings.  One thing…If I do not fill up the container entirely, what fills the ‘gray’ area that remains?  The background of the page you’ve chosen?

YES – any unused space gets filled with the chosen background.

As suggested, use Preview mode to see what your book will look like in print…

if you dont fill a container, the background will appear. In EDIT mode, you will see the gray container… but in PREVIEW mode you will always see what will print which will show you the background instead of gray container space.

Howdy all,

The resolution warning is accurate, and goes away when an image’s pixel density reaches 150dpi. Please note that 150dpi is still only half of maximum resolution (300dpi), which will produce the absolute best results. The pixel recommendations are based on 300dpi.

I’m actually only chiming in here because I’ve seen folks use Photoshop to upsample small source images to skirt BookSmart’s resolution warning. That’s a perfect example of when a photo will probably print pixelated despite technically meeting an image frame’s recommended pixel count.

The original post in this thread referred to scanned images, which should print fine. I just wanted to bring up that notable exception to the resolution rule…

Cheers,
Jeremy

How do I zoom the image to whatever size I want within the container? I haven’t figured this out yet or found it in the faqs. As far as I am aware there are 2 options for size, one is fill the frame, the other is fit the pic to the frame, then in either of those sizes of course I can move the picture about so I could just show a corner of it, I get that. But sometimes it would be nice to have in between options that don’t involve trying to crop the pic in my image editing software.

Annette;

Use the "Zoom-Slider" tool on the toolbar…

Then you can also use the Arrow keys on your keyboard to move the image around the container…

NOTE: There is a bug in the latest release, such that images do NOT "Align" properly in accordance with the tool icons. This is being worked on, and hopefully will be fixed in the next release… It’s causing me all sorts of grief!
