BookSmart

Crash, Crash, Crash

I’ve been working to get my book finished up tonight.

I haven’t had any extensive work with booksmart before, other than a quick trial initially.

After about four hours of working, I’m on my 18th crash.

I’m on a mac, up to date, latest software, etc.

I’m just curious if this is normal for this application?

I got this problem nonstop, even after trying patiently not to do anything that I thought might be causing the problem (changing layouts after adding pictures, altering the theme or backgrounds in any way). I finally got fed up and have deleted the program. Forget it, it’s just not worth having to restart every 10 minutes. I’m on a mac too, and have never had this problem with any other software.

Hi all,

Sorry to hear you’re crashing. Please fill out a crash report with your email address, and then contact Customer Support (by clicking here and filling out the form) to let them know you have done so.

They should be able to get you back on track!

Thanks for hanging in there,
Jeremy

WHY DO THEY KEEP TELLING US TO EMAIL THEM?! It’s been 3 days and my constant-crash problem is STILL not fixed! Isn’t there a hotline?! A patch download?! Anything?! PLEASE STOP TELLING US TO EMAIL YOU. That’s all you’ve said on ALL of these posts! You could be a little more helpful!

Howdy sdxt,

Thank you for your patience. Please understand that there are different causes for different crashes, and so there is nothing helpful we can say without working with you 1-on-1 through the help page. This could be a system-specific issue, a bad installation, a conflict in your main user account, a security setting in your operating system, etc. etc.

We want to get you the best help possible as effectively as possible. To that end, it is necessary for me to communicate that these forums are the place for Blurb authors to connect regarding help they can give each other. This isn’t the place to ask for and receive one-on-one technical support from a Blurb representative.

Please hang in there and work with Customer Support. That’s honestly and truly the best way to go.

Jeremy

I am working on my book right now and am having the same problem. I am also on a Mac.

I was hoping to come on here and find some answers but I guess that I am out of luck since no solutions have been posted.

I am very disappointed, after extensive searches,I found that Booksmart was one of the best publishing software ..
Then I have the same issue :
After many days of work and150 pages away, I can’t open my work, reinstalled…nothing.

I sent an email many days ago, no answer..

If you have a good product, but a very poor customer service, this will not last long !

Customer Support normally work Monday to Friday only. As it is Labor Day in the US, which is a public holiday, support will have shut down for a long weekend.

You should get a response when they return on Tuesday.

When you use the customer/technical or order support form it explains at the top that you will get a response within one business day.

ISSUE FIXED !!!!!!

If it can help for some users..until Tuesday !!

I could not open my book project this morning, then I looked at the files, I use a Mac on OSX10,4.. but it should be the same on PC :

1/ under /booksmartdata, check the Log file, when it crash it create a log “1220276613610.txt” for exemple, it should tell you the Error.

2/ For me error was, at line 1771, “&#0” is an invalid XML in the file “mybook.backup”

3/ I used a text editor to replace all the “Baskerville<” by “Baskerville<”

4/ Then save under the same name, and it work fine !, don’t forgot to do a backup of your project first.

Hope it will help.

Hi sbenard98,

Clever author are you!

Readers should be aware that sbenard98 experienced a very specific and relatively uncommon crash. Editing the book file is very rarely a good idea, as even a small change can corrupt an entire book project. Unless you’re able to determine you’re experiencing the same crash, and the l33t skillz to edit XML, I must strongly caution against delving into and altering your book file via the steps in this post.

But, sbenard98, you can pat yourself on the back :-)

Cheers everyone!

Jeremy

You can edit your work using BookSmart jetblasted, Jeremy is saying that  you shouldn’t go "under the hood" and tinker with the BookSmart internal files.
