proof colors + simulate paper = fuzzy blacks

Hi! I am using an apple 17" powerbook scren calibrated + photoshop cs3 to design my photo book. My pictures come from medium format 6×6 slides scanned with an epson 4990 scanner.

I have loaded de hp indigo ICC profile to PS CS3, and everything looks almost great whan I activate proof colors,

but if I do activate simulate paper color , my blacks turn almost grey and everythiglooks quite fuzzy , it´s like washed, loosing a lot fo contrast.

Am I doing something wrong?

maybe my images are too light?

Should I adjust them?

thank you!

I’m certainly not an expert on softproofing, but the more recent postings I’ve read on the forums about this topic indicate that Simulate Paper Color and Simulate Black Ink should NOT be selected when softproofing.
