system requirements
I recently built my first book on booksmart. It was a 170 page/534MB family photo book. I had built it with no major problems, had proofed it and was changing the font color on the spine just prior to placing an order when I encountered the infamous "technical glitch." My book is now lost. My question is, my computer only has 512MB of RAM and my processor is only running at 996MHz. The 512 is at minimum required and the 996 is actually below. Tech support says that the reason I lost my book was very likely nothing to do with anything on my end but I have noticed that opening Word documents lately is taking far longer than normal. Could the 534 MB book stored on my hard drive be the reason I lost my book and/or why it’s taking so long to open documents? Will simply deleting my old book solve that problem? And do I risk losing another book when it’s nearly complete because of my system deficiencies?

I don’t know what to say about your situation with computer and hardware configuration and all.
If you have limited space on hard drive on your computer – smaller hard drive, and if you run kinda of pretty “aging” computer, that is possible factor.
I have two computers, laptop – MacBook Pro 17” and Mac Pro. I have over 3 TB of hard drive space on my MacPro and I also have 1TB external hard drive. When I travel abroad, I am able to retrieve my files (either upload or download files) over Internet from my hotel suite.
When I work with BookSmart app, I usually export “back up” BookSmart’s native file called .book files and put it on that external hard drive. It is not a problem for me, because I understand how the system works, how to upload and how to download and how to access over secured MacPro server – it is kinda a bit advanced technical involvement. FOr this reason, I upload lotsa of photo files from my laptop while traveling. I have many thousands, thousands of photo files sitting on MacPro server (and I always back up all of photos on DVD discs and all). I have a friend who keeps duplicated DVD disc copies, just in case something happen to my residence. Always plan ahead and prepare for something unexpected situation or happenings in the walk of my life journey.
Uhm, I also notice that if you work with many pages, like in your case with 170 pages plus, BookSmart usually save lot of files, the more pages you construct/work with, the more hard drive space it requires to support in order to work with BookSmart file.
Uhm, one other thing, do you have high-speed broadband modem to upload your book files, because it will takes a while to upload your finished book file when you are done working with your book. If you use kinda aged dail-up connection modem, that might upload the finished book file to Blurb server for a long time. While I have the access to extremely high-speed, very very fast broadband cable modem at my residence, my book files has been uploaded kinda pretty fast, but it takes some good… say 10 to 12 minutes if I remember this correctly.
I hope my insight and thought be of helpful to you. I also can run Windows-based on top of my Mac (both on laptop and Mac Pro).
I hope that helps, maybe not. But only insight and ideas. Good luck with your remedies.
