Softcover or Hardcover?

I just published my first book on this site and ordered my softcover copy. After it arrived I was amazed with the wonderful quality of the printing. The matte paper used is perfect and my photographs look great. However, I have been thinking and having second thoughts on whether softcover was the best choice or whether I should have ordered my first ever book as a Hardcover?

I definatley plan on creating thicker and better books in the future and so would it have been better to buy Hardcover copies for myself for the start? Please comment and share your thoughts. Thanks.

Last month I created my first Blurb book – photos from a recent trip to Ireland.  Since we wanted a copy for us, and one for my mother-in-law who went with us, I took the opportunity to order both, a softcover and a hardcover.  The book itself only ended up being 68 or so pages (so only 34 pages thick) – after all, it was only a 5 day trip and this was an experiment.   When we received the books, I was very happy with both.  The print quality was good, the covers were great (except for a spelling error I found after the fact!!), and delivery was within the estimated timeframe.  However, I did end up sending the hardcover to my mother-in-law since I thought it was just a little bit nicer.  It felt a little more solid and "show-off worthy".  Both my husband and I decided that my next book will probably be a hardcover.  Besides, I like the extra touches I could do with the flaps on the cover.

Just my 2 cents worth – for now, I’m just planning on having fun with this new outlet for a newfound hobby.

Thanks very much for the feedback. My dad wanted to order a copy for his mum (my nan) and so he ordered the Hardcover. But he has said that we can swap so he can send the softcover to my nan. This has settled my mind. Now onto the second book! I am hopeful for the future of my presence on Blurb. I really want to do well. Alot of hard work has gone into my book and even more work is going into the second one.

In my opinion the hardcover book is much nicer and makes a better presentation. I design books for clients and have sold over 200 copies and although the quality of printing on the cover and the cover itself of the softcover books are excellent – the hardcover just has that extra "ooomph!" and is well worth the additional price.
