Poor Quality !

Received my first book. Made it in aperture then resized it to fit in the Blurb format. Imported all full page jpg’s in the blurb program and uploaded all that. So far so good, nice programm, good upload.
within one week i received the book, wow that’s quick (Netherlands)
Looking in the book i want to cry, poor quality! images are a lot darker, and text is blurred big time, even noice around all the text edges.
The book is 150 pages and all pages are that quality, even the white background has a dot in it, noice so to say. What went wrong mister Blurb, do you Jpg all the pics again when I order my book and is that Jpg quality very poor? I gues that’s the way it went wrong.

I also made a book this way at lulu, that quality is 4 times better, incredible sharp en fress pictures and a printed hardcover, same price, slower delivery (3 weeks)

So till now, Blurb is not my choice.
Only big issue, the format is close to Apertures book size, and lulu is not delivering that.
Wake up companies get a 1-x8 inch landscape siezed book and beat the shit out of Apple’s high price level!!

I’d just like to second this opinion. Dont get me wrong – I think blurb is great, and if someone were doing a black and white book (a non-designer) I’d recommend the service, but at this point in time, dropping jpegs in to b.s. gives too low a quality – the aforementioned blurred text and dreadful jpeg compression noise.

So any pro designers thinking this is the solution for a high quality colour print job, I’d say think  again. I’m happy to discuss the quality by email if anyone wants help: arcadeimage (at) hotmail.com

i’d send pictures and email to blurb itself.

as for myself, I’ve been nothing but pleased with 3 separate orders of both hard cover and soft cover books. yeah i’d like a thicker page, but as for colors, everything is rght on.

It am sure I will offend some people with this but I could not hold my tongue. It is truly amazing to me the complaints about the quality of Blurb. I made a simple book of a car show with a good quality camera. The people that have seen it (including me) were awed by the quality of the images. People who hope they are the world’s next undiscovered artistic genius and are so consumed by the subtle differences in shading, color nuances and tonal balances need to realize that these books cost less than a good pair of shoes or a fair bottle of wine! You get what you pay for and for what you pay they are fantastic! I have noticed great differences in the appearance of the books just viewing them on different computers. What we see on the screen, what our home printers show us, what we envision and what comes out of the printer in some distant land has to different. There is no way around it . If every color, every shade, every contrast has to be perfect so you will get recognized and sell millions, step up and pay the price the big boys charge. Then you can review pre-press samples hours on end until they get it the way you want it. Meanwhile the rest of us "common folk" are thrilled at the quality, service and price that the kind people at Blurb provide us with.

Hi have to agree with Waltn1 above, I took delivery of my first 2 books today and I was blown away by how good they came out, I was a bit worried about it all after reading all the comments in the forum of issues with binding printing etc.  My 8×10 and 7×7 both image heavy motorsport books are great, perfect thanks blurb.  Only problem I have in the 7×7 is my typo’s so I have fixed these and uploaded and re-ordered.

I also have upload issues which Ben is working on for me.  Thanks to all at Blurb, all i want now is a cheaper postage rate to Aus.

Thanks.

Hi Koeneman, could this have something to do with the new printing facilities they have in the Netherlands? I’m from the Netherlands as well and received my book 2 weeks ago. Print quality was very disappointing and to be honest what you would find in a magazine. Miles away from bookstore quality. This has really surprised me because people who receive their copy from the American printer are generally raving about the print quality.

Just my two cents worth…

The quality of my books is amazing! Color is spot on with perfect white balance, etc. Yes, you need to properly profile your work, etc, but overall these books are fantastic. I am selling a new volume of my work; 200 photos spread over 300 pages at a sales price of $275.00. Great profit!

I too have a problem with the quality. I ordered a book that came from the US a couple of months ago and it was great. The second book was from the Netherlands and the quality was really poor, dark photo reproduction, even slightly blurred. Also they charged me the same courier cost for sending from the US even though it came from the Netherlands to Ireland…..very cheeky!!!
