Black or White page background?

My first Blurb photo book was done with black set as page background. I really loved it as the color contrasted well to my rich-colored Santorini photos. (comments are always welcome!)

However, when I showed it to a friend he said that black makes photos look "smaller" to the eye. I also checked some professional photobooks from Greek islands that I had bought in the past. All had a white background.

I am now preparing a new photobook with photos from Paros island. What background should I pick? Black or White? I expect the variety of colours to be just like the Santorini gallery above. Your views would be much appreciated.

Hi Yannis;

You have some fabulous shots there… Been a long time since I was in the Greek islands; clearly need to get back!

Black or White – always a tough call; personally I favour White, I think it looks cleaner & sharper, and you’re right, most "coffee-table" books tend to favour White.

The Black tends to hold finger-prints more than White does as well, which doesn’t help…

...but I’m going to add to the confusion now by saying that (apparently) the BEST background for image dispaly is a medium grey!

Apparently that’s why software like Adobe use grey as a BG!

But, I’d go with White. Mock it up & see what it looks like. If you don’t like the White, it’s easy enough to change the BG…

Cheers;

Lee

Yannis, you’re works are marvelous. I would buy one if it’s come to a book.

For me personally I choose white like Lee said.

But black could be very nice too if it’s happened to be done correctly with a pretty layout.

Nate.

Nate and Lee,

Really thanks for your kind comments either here or at the guestbook of my photo webpage!

Well Lee, interesting comment this one about Adobe and CS. But then….. what about Lightroom (which is black!) :-)

Anyway, I will give the white background a try…

Regards, Yannis
