just curious about the printers
I was just wondering where all the printers are located….I’ve heard mention of some in Seatle, NYC, and one across the pond….I was just curious where the closest one to me is…. oh, and I’m axiously awaiting my first book… :D

i’ve had one book shipped from San Francisco, and two from Seattle. I don’t know if this indicates where they were printed, however the book from San Francisco is of much higher quality regarding color than the others.

The books I ordered to a San Francisco address came from Seattle, and the books that went to New York addresses came from W. Springfield, MA.

I spoke to a fellow last fall at one of the larger New England jobber binderies who told me that they were doing most of blurb’s east coast printing and binding. This kind of bindery can bind anything from one book to a hundred thousand, and do.
I think you will find that most of the print on demand book making is being done by middle sized binderies who have expanded into printing. They’ve mostly been doing black and white repros and such things as theses on Docutechs for years and lately seem to be getting into color work. A binder is a better bet for POD book making for a couple of reasons, but to put it simply, POD printing is a lot easier to master than binding is. On demand printing was and still is aimed chiefly toward the production of commercial ephemera. The quality has improved to the point that you can do what is an acceptable but low grade of color book printing, but it tends to be a better business model as an add-on for a middle sized bindery than for most printers.
And yes, that binder I spoke to is in the Springfield area.
