PNG images on lined pages - image box background was filled BLACK. Why?I created a journal and used PNG images. I received my printed journal yesterday and I as so disappointed. The PNG images (with transparent backgrounds) that I placed on the lined pages printed out with the image box filled in with BLACK. The preview was fine in the software, and unfortunately, I did not preview it online (I didn’t realize I could). I sent a message to Customer Support and the guy told me that my book was printed the way I created it, with the image box filled in with black background. He advised me to remove the black background I don’t want to see. Oh, ok, thanks. Apparently, someone didn’t read the part in my message that asked what I did wrong and how I could fix it. Okaayyy…so it’s time to turn to the forum for help. Any suggestions on what to do to fix that for next time? BTW, I’m not a designer, nor do I play one on TV. :-) Thank you, in advance!! Allie.

Did you use BookSmart? The most common cause of a black image box is photos with the CMYK colourspace rather than sRGB, BookSmart can’t cope when it comes to printing. There’s a FAQ. …..Tony

Hi Tony, Thank you for your response. Yes, I just checked and the images are in “RGB-alpha” (does that make it different from just plain RGB??). I used BookSmart to create the journal. What’s weird is that I added other images to the blank pages in the journal and they printed without a black background. It happened only with the images where I added an image box to the lined pages. I added images to the blank pages designed for images and the backgrounds were transparent. The customer service rep told me to go into Photoshop and remove the black background. I don’t have Photoshop and I opened the images in GIMP and they have the alpha layer, so I’m thinking it has something to do with adding image boxes to lined pages… What do you think? THANKS!!!! :-)

AllieFit, I just had the exact same thing happen to me and I’m curious if you evey got a resolution to this matter. Also I am about to submit a new book that is not a journal that also has transparent PNG files and I want to make sure that they will not have black backgrounds. Has anyone had a problem with non-journal books producing black backgrounds on PNGs? Victoria
