Scanning in handwritten text
Can somebody tell me how to do this? Help! I have handwritten statements from participants in my photo project and want to use them next to the photos in my book. How can I do this?

I think you can extrapolate a method based on a signature file that my workplace made of my signature. They had me write my name with a very black gel pen or fine point marker. You could simulate this by photocopying the written work to make sure it’s dark enough. When it’s scanned, it’s saved as a picture. You can experiment to see whether it works better to have it as a jpeg or to treat it like a line drawing. Once turned the statements are turned into pictures, I think you should be able to use them like any other picture you place in the book. This is no doubt a rather primitive approach, but it might work or at least help you or someone else start thinking of something more elegant. Good luck!

one additional idea – use a flatbed scanner, you can get high enough quality ones very cheaply these days, scan in the handwritten statements. Scan at least 300 dpi and save as JPG. The, just drag and drop these images into BookSmart like you would any other image. For an example, check out they preview of this book by Eileen – blurb’s founder: http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/26392 Chad, VP design, blurb

Rebsfield, I would also encourage you to invest in a good scanner – like CapnScrappy noted, they are so cheap now for very good quality. I myself have scanned handwriting and drawings at 600 dpi (a high setting just to be on the safe side) and they have reproduced unbelievably well. Good luck! Teri
