What font colour on black background

To all you designers out there, do you have any idea what colour would go well for captions on a black background?

I know white would be the obvious but looking at the preview I found that it quite distracted from the picture. I’m creating a book for my parents’ 35th anniversary which depicts pretty much their entire lives. I personally don’t like captions at all, but I know my parents would like to see dates etc. so I’m trying to find a good compromise here. Meaning a colour that’s readable in a less obtrusive manner than white. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!!

How about a medium-light shade of gray?  Light enough to read, but dark enough to not take the focus of the photos.  Might even give it a bit of a sophisticated look.

I have seen light teal (blue/grey/green) used to good effect. I’m using white in my book, though, and I don’t find it distracting from the photos. What font are you using?

I was thinking of using Bradley Hand – but I’m not sure if it will be printed correctly since it isn’t very bold (which is also what I like about it). I won’t be using the font option in Booksmart itself but I’ll export it via InDesign. Thank you for your suggestions, I’ll be sure ot try them out ! :)

I’m not very keen on Bradley Hand – it’s a bit of an overused font and doesn’t look very convincingly hand-written. I’m using a font called Rabiohead (not Radiohead!) which is a bit bolder and seems to show up well.

You can see it and download it for free here: http://www.dafont.com/rabiohead.font
