Will the blacks match?

I’m planning to do some photo layouts in Photoshop, combining three or four photos overlapping on a black background and importing them onto my (black) pages. Thing is, I don’t necessarily want to use full bleed, as I’d like the headers, page numbers etc to show up.

My question is, will a black (RGB 0,0,0) background match the black page background exactly, or will I end up with a rectangle of  "different" black on the page?

It seems like it should match, but look at this post for example: http://forums.blurb.com/forums/4/topics/1985

It seems like black text still shows up on a black background, which leads me to worry that I’ll end up with two-tone "shiny and matt" pages or something.

I suppose the safest thing would be to do the page full bleed, but then I would end up with the text on the JPG instead of the vector on BookSmart, and I doubt it would look as good.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Do you have special color calibration device for your monitor, no?

Speaking of which, it IS most important step to make sure that your monitor have accurate color calibration. It should be updated weekly basis. Because color efficiency inside the monitor before our “naked” eyes do not see the change, but actually is slowly changing.

On a final note, having a calibrated device set up and keep it to current on weekly basis, this itself save you lot of time and money, and perhaps some trees.

Why would monitor calibration make a difference with this issue? If the eyedropper in Photoshop is showing (0, 0, 0) then surely it’s black, regardless of what shows on the monitor.

Answering my own question here - I received my first trial book today, and it contains an oval map that I placed on a black background in Photoshop. The background matches perfectly. Having said that, I think I’ll just do full page JPGs to be on the safe side.

As for the book quality, I am very impressed. It’s a 10×8, 180 pages, and the printing and binding are excellent. If I’m being veeeerrry picky, I’ve found one pic with a small ink splodge, and the title page has a few white flecks on the black background, but nothing that you wouldn’t expect to see and ignore in a shop-bought book.

I didn’t do any soft proofing, and I’m pleased with the colour reproduction.  I was worried a lot of pics would be too dark, but they’re fine. I can see a few that could do with a bit of a tweak before I print again, but to be honest they looked marginal even on the monitor but I was too lazy to sort them out!
