How do I reduce images to 8-bits using Adobe Elements?
Dear forum members, From Blub’s faq, I read that I need to reduce my (JPG) color and b&w images to 8-bits. However, how do I do that using Adobe Photoshop Elements? (Or Paint.Net or Irfanview). I’m completely stumped. Thank you in advance for any help. Regards, Maarten

Maarten, in Photoshop CS you go the the menu bar and choose Image, then Mode then there’s an option to tick 8 or 16 I suspect it is the same in Elements, but can’t be sure. .....Tony

Tony, Thank you for your information! I did manage to find the option in Elements exactly where you said it would be. It’s greyed out, however, on JPG pictures so I can’t use it. More importantly, however, your answers to another forum member (‘Sandytoes’) regarding the need to alter the images from 24 to 8 bit was spot on. If I really don’t need to make them 8 bit, then I won’t. Saves a lot of time and aggrevation. Thanks again Maarten

Presumably greyed out as they were already 8-bit :-) .......TOny

Maarten; Tony just beat me to it !!! You may also care to verify that your images are indeed JPEG files… BookSmart will only handle JPG or PNG files. If your images are PSD, TIFF or any flavour of RAW then BookSmart can’t deal with them… That may also be a cause of the 8-bit option being grayed out… Cheers; Lee

Tony, Lee, 1. Some pictures (they are all JPG’s btw) were, ahum, already in 8bit, but others are at 24 bit 2. I’ll dig further into Adobe help site (help file Essentieal is no use) regarding this peculier thing Thanks Maarten
