Resolution Question
I just published my first book and the results are great. But I realize something: Although I uploaded the full-size files, the default resolution was 180 ppi (with an image size of about 23 inches wide). I could increase the ppi to 300, and let the image resize; it would be the same file size, and the image size would still be bigger than the final printed image. Part of me thinks that, since the file is the same size, there is no point to doing this. The other part of me thinks that I should do that, because the ppi will be the final image resolution that gets printed. Which is correct? Can someone un-confuse me here? Thanks, Paul

It will make no difference. The "ppi" figure is meaningless as far as the book is concerned. All that means is that if you were to print the image on a normal printer, at "100% scale" it would be 23 inches wide. You’re not going to be printing it 23 inches wide, so the resolution will not be 180ppi! As far as BookSmart goes, it makes no difference whether it is 23in wide at 180ppi, or 11.5in wide at 360ppi, or 5.75in wide at 720ppi – the files are identical because they all have the same number of pixels (about 4,140 wide). So the printed "resolution" will be 4,140 divided by whatever the size of your book is (either 7in, 10in or 13in wide, depending which book format you chose). Even at the largest size, 13in wide, the dpi will be about 318 which is plenty. There seems to be a lot of confusion about "ppi" and "dpi". Basically, if you are printing at a fixed size, ignore the "ppi". Just make sure there are enough pixels to give a good dpi figure at the printed size.
