Book Design and Imaging

Blurb templates work well on one side, not other.

OK, I’m a professionally published author, so I have worked with book layouts before.

I’ve just started playing around with Blurb and I’m finding that their template structure isn’t very forgiving when it comes to lefthand pages and righthand pages.  Some layouts work great on one side of the fold and terrible on the other.  In trying to keep my images from looking off the pages, this is becoming a problem.  Its also hampering consitency in the book as some layouts work better on the left hand side, and others on the right.

Is there  anyway to flip the layouts or do I have to create my own layout my own layout pages?

If there is no way to correct this issue, are the Barins behind Blurb working to correct this issue in a future release?

Hi Stuart,

Is there anyway to flip the layouts or do I have to create my own layout my own layout pages? <

Uhm, I do not know if you have Adobe Photoshop and/or InDesign application(s) installed on your computer. I guess that you probably have Photoshop, but don’t know if you own Adobe InDesign, though. I create customized full-bleed layout in InDesign few months ago, and it works out nicely for me.

There is a pretty good tutorial and also an article, and there are many forum discussion on the topic related to customized full-bleed layout at Blurb Forums.

There is an article posted at Blurberati site, article’s title: “How to import your custom design into BookSmart”

http://blurberatiblog.com/index.php/2007/05/03/how-to-import-your-custom-design-into-booksmart/

Also, I think this be of an interest and assistance for you related to color management, ICC color profile used for Blurb book, and the related topic, this is discussed at Blurberati Blog site under title: “Color profile for Blurb books…”

http://blurberatiblog.com/index.php/2007/02/13/color-profile-for-blurb-books/

Also, along with that article about Color profile for Blurb books, you might want to download PDF on how to set up ICC profile and set it up on your machine, and to work with soft proof working with that downloaded file of ICC at other site created by Sam Edge, here:

http://www.bonsai-photography.com/

I believe that you know how important soft proof so important to work with high-quality professional photo papers, whether it is matte or glossy or other manufacturers’ “museum-like” or archival photo (or fine art) paper. So I’ll just leave that with you.

Hope this helps. If not, let us know and some other participants or myself can help you out.

Cheers, Brian

Brian, I had the same question as Stuart, (and I am far, far more ignorant than the two of you regarding these matters), so I was very thankful and very impressed by the level of detail you were willing to give. I found it very helpful.

Thanks, Tracy
