My first try
Before putting my photography together in a portfolio book to show clients, I decided to test the waters here at Blurb. For a test, my wife and I put some stuff together to give to our family for Christmas. I tried a few different PS techniques to see what worked best and I tried some different kinds of pages and images from seascapes to macros to underwater. All in all, I was pretty impressed. My only complaint, that wasn’t my fault, was with the soft cover. In humid weather, the front and back curled terribly. I don’t know if the paper was too thin or if it was a result of a lot of ink on one side and none on the other. At any rate, I would suggest trying to fix that since it ruined the otherwise professional look of the book. The photos were very nice and the colors were faithfully reproduced – as well as expected going from monitor to ink anyway. BTW, I think that a lot of the complaints I have read here come from people that don’t realize that ink will never look as bright as the rgb on a monitor. If that is the expectation, there will certainly be disappointment. So I will do another book as a portfolio of my work and use the hard cover to avoid the curling issue. From reading other posts, I think I was lucky. While I believe Blurb is doing a good job, I think a lot will have to do with the printing company that does the book. I’m sure if too many bad products come from a particular printer, Blurb will quit using them. But of course that won’t help those that received the bad books. The printer that did my book is a keeper. Unlike the unhappy camper that had a lousy job done on the solid color, the solid colors on my book were flawless. With this in mind, I wonder if I could choose to have the same printing company for my next project?
