Update: Premium Paper now available!

**You can now order your books with Premium Paper**

It’s a classic comment here in the Forums: "When are you going to offer different paper options?" Well, we’ve been working on just that and today we are happy to announce that beginning on Thursday, you’ll now be able to pick from our standard option or a new Premium Paper option.

Our Premium Paper is a 100# (180 gsm) text silk-finish paper and you can order it at check-out for books up to 160 pages. Our 5×8 B/W Text option, available with only the most recent download of BookSmart, is the only exception and is offered in 60# (90 gsm) off-white text paper only.

For more information, check out our blog post

And thanks to everyone in the Forums who asked for Premium Paper. We hope you like it.

Dear staff, Do you plan on using this option on books with many more pages as I was holding out for a project with well into the 200 page range and perhaps higher. Bummer !

We are definitely planning to extend the page range support for Premium Paper. Look for an update about this in 2009.

Will the printout looks different on standard paper and premium paper options ?  Will the printing process is changed for premium paper options.  In the past, I got some bad experiences that the photobook looked dull and dark.  I need to adjust individual photos’ brightness upwards manually to make it look naturally ( what I saw it on LCD).   Is there any improvement ?  Should I continue to adjust the photos’ brightness upwards for premium paper option ?

Hi,

Thanks for the good questions. The Premium Paper option will be available today by the end of the business day, California time. So, the countdown begins.

As for the cost, it depends on the your book format, how many pages, cover type, etc. Best to wait for pricing page updates.

As for adjusting your photos, what you see on your LCD monitor is aided by the backlight. If pictures are dark, no matter what paper you choose, they will print dark. If you adjust them to compensate for the lack of the brightness in the printed product, you should continue to do so.

Hope this helps. We cannot wait to see what everyone thinks about the new paper.

I have the same problem as aop27… I just ordered a book last night, is there any way to change my order to the premium paper?

It has been only a couple hours since I ordered it anyway (under 24).

Please let me know!

-Thanks

Hi there,

Once you place an order, it goes straight into our printer’s queue and begins processing. Because our production process is highly automated, there is no way to change your order once you place it.

Hi,

This is fantastic; been waiting for it for an year at least!  Anyway, your standard option is 80# (118 gsm) per a post by Bruce in an earlier thread on paper quality.  The premium paper is 100# (180 gsm).  How does this compare to, say, National Geographic magazine, and, say, their photography books (like the softcover 100 best photos etc.) Is the Blurb premium offering at least comparable to the thickness and qualities of the nat. geo magazine pages, if not their photo books?

Thanks

Well done Blurb for listening and responding (eventually) to what clients were after!

You are now back in the race with another couple of suppliers for high quality books. Will do another test book and await the results with interest.

Keep listening to your customers Blurb Staff!!! You’ve got great software & service – shame to be let down by less flexible product options.

Best wishes.

I am wondering how the standard and premium papers differ the way they lay flat when the book is open.  Will the heavier premium paper lay open easier, or will the stiff paper stick up more when flipping through pages? I don’t want the reader to need to use thumbs to hold the pages open. Thanks!
