Binding Change?

I recently ordered a couple copies of a new book I’m producing with 25 other photographers. In general everything seemed fine but after a couple views of the pages I’m seeing problems with the binding. This is happening with a Standard Landscape Format with less than 120 pages. The last page in both copies has detached and in some areas in the center of the book. Looking at my first book that I did over a year or so ago I can see quite a difference between the look of the stiching. The previous has a solid white patch at the top and bottom. The newer ones look like they doesnt even use thread! just glue.

What am I seeing here?  What has changed with your binding process? and can I return these to get the problem fixed? I’m worried about my new book and the quality of the binding.

I forgot to mention that this is a Hardcover Book. I know the softcover use to use glue for binding but I haven’t ordered a softcover in years. It looks like my book was bound incorrectly.

seems they are experimenting with binding, I already mentioned this in another post.

I previously ordered 8×10 80p softcover and 160p hardcover, and both had basic ‘glue’ binding; looks strong enough to me, no problem with pages falling out or something. My only dislike is that these books cannot open flat because the binding is very ‘stiff’.

I recently had a 120p hardcover book done (from the Dutch printer, like the others) and this one has ‘stitching’ that looks very ugly and unprofessional to me (you can see the punchholes with the ‘stiches’ between the pages). Blurb support calls it a feature, and maybe it is stronger than the glue binding that I was used to, but I don’t like it so I will avoid this type of book in the future.

If they have changed the binding on their Hardcover to what they use on their softcover  than that is horrible. I’m waiting to hear confirmation back from Blurb Support. Glue binding is not strong enough to support a hardcover book with over 100 pages.

Is there anyone else out there who has recently ordered a hardcover book? I’m curious to hear if this binding change is on all hardcovers?

Anyone?

I’ve had a few back over the last few months (since May?), all 13×11 hardbacks (repeat orders for the same books). The binding has not changed in that time. The 80 page books were stitched, the 146 page ones glued. The printing was in the Netherlands.

I’ve had no problems at all with the glued ones except that, obviously, the book will not open flat. But the stitched ones don’t either – I’m not sure of the technical terms but they are single pages stitched together where the glue would otherwise go rather than a group of sheets folded in half then stitched through the fold like a classically bound book from the days of hand book binding.

The first print of my 146 page book has had a lot of handling by many people and there is no sign of the binding deteriorating in anyway. I’m happy and will be ordering many more I hope.

Thanks Tony! good to know. Im quite happy with my first book which was stitched binding. I was just surprised with this new book I did. I wasn’t expecting the glued binding. Certainly didn’t expect the splitting problem. Blurb support has been awesome and they are taking care of the problem. I just hope my next copies are either sticthed or very solid glue. I will always prefer stiched over glue when it comes to hardcovers.

I signed on this morning to inquire on the exact same topic.  I printed a number of books a year ago that was nicely bound (large landscape.)  Last week, I published a new book but with the same fomat and size.  The staples immediately popped through and the binding immediately began deteriorating.  Do you know if there are other publishing options in B3 or beyond?

I just read in another thread that someone ordered a 13×11 Large Format book with Premium Paper and it also used a glue binding. This is scary. Although he said he hasnt had any problems with it YET, I think its only a matter of time. Im awaiting my 13×11 Premium Paper book and I’m worried it too will be a glue binding.

Bring back the stitch!!!!!!
