Book Printing

My Blurb book arrived. It's fabulous! See the end result...

In another thread I was explaining the steps and the overall experiences from Book setup to delivery and quality inspection. Check the topic by clicking here.

I thought however that it would be better if I posted some real photos from the end result of my photobook . These photos are also in the Blurb Flickr group.

Actually this is my first Blurb book, publicly available for view and I am very happy about the quality, the binding (this time!) and the overall feel and weight of the book. Last time I gave Blurb a bashing for loose leafs and binding issues from day zero. This time it’s better, although I am still crossing fingers! Colour reproduction is much better than expected, given the "difficult" subjects (sunsets etc). The overall feeling of the book is really professional and I would hesitate to give it very high marks.

The book contains 60 colour photos depicting Paros island, Greece. Pictures that convey the true spirit of the island… beyond beaches and the obvious pictures! A 15-page pdf book preview is also available in  my website’s Shop if you consider purchasing it. Comments on my Paros photos or the book would be most welcome at my guestbook.

So here are the results (some artifacts or visibe noise on these pictures is due to .jpg compression and not visible on the book)

1. An overall view of the inside:

Another view of the inside:

3. Detail of the binding/ stitching:

The hadcover (at the right of the cover there is a desk-lamp shadow which looks like a bent. It’s not. The book arrived in perfect shape)

Detail from the inside:

I have been critical to various things about Blurb in the past (check my previous posts!). But this time they got it really good and perfectly as expected and I think you should know it, so as to gain confidence!

Best regards, Yannis

Third paragraph at the end should read:

"The overall feeling of the book is really professional and I would not hesitate to give it very high marks."

(Blurb people: do make editing of past topics possible pls!)

Yannis

Wow, that is a beautiful looking book, your photos look incredible!

I’ve just ordered a 20 page softcover as a sample to see if the quality of the reproduction for toned photos and color tinted vintage photos is true.  This give me great hope for my book.

Good luck with yours, it’s lovely!

Hi Yannis, your book looks terrific. I had a good experience with my first book as well. I notice that you sell it from your web site. Did you just buy up a volume of books from Blurb and then now sell and distribute them from your own web site?  I very much like to have my own look and feel with my book and not have Blurb as the intermediary between me and my clients. I paid extra to have my own logo but now would like my customers to come directly to me rather than go to the Blurb site to buy books. How have you handled this.  My site is:  www.ohlsenphotography.com and my book can be found at.  http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/90372

I would appreciate your instigh Yannis, Regards, Dave

Hi Yannis,

your book is beutyfull. I had my first book last week, I’m very pleased with the result but hope to be able to make my next books even nicer.

What kind of book is yours, a photobook, a portfolio?

Kind regards, Dorthe

@rudyfan

Donna, thanks for your kind comments!

I also stick religiously to the tactic of ordering one copy first to check the quality of reproduction and then to move on to more copies if OK.

I checked your website and it is very very well laid out and very informative! Congrats!

As for your photos, you should always bear in mind that color tinted vintage photos might be more difficult to handle. Even expensive home inkjet printers need more than a couple of black inks to faithfully reproduce gray tones.

I am sure though you will have "a different" and a much more fulfilling experience with your photobook! Hope the best! Please give us feedback and possibly some pictures of the book to share.

Regards, Yannis

(ps: oh! and something else… if you don’t think that the book meets your expectations, do try another copy with a hardcover this time. I remember reading somewhere in this forum by users, that the printing process of hardcovers is different and better)

@dohlsen

Dave I checked your photo gallery and your Blurb book. I think your photos are very striking and you have a "different" view. I really appreciate it that you shared it here! Very nice photos…

As for the way I sell my Paros book through my website, you are indeed right. I have now pruchased a number of copies which I intend to keep stored.  Visitors can only buy my photobook directly from my website, by using Paypal or a credit card (like you do with your photos).

You see, since I am from Greece/ Europe I cannot use the "Set your own price" option.

However, after careful consideration I decided NOT to use the "Set your price option" even if it becomes available!

The reasons are:

- I prefer to always keep the visitor inside my photo website and fully control the process so as to keep him/ her happy. Any redirection may increase frustration, especially for the less computer-literate who gets easily-lost.

- I prefer to have a small number of copies on my own BEFORE selling them, so as to thoroughly check the quality/ binding issues.

- Mailing costs are better controlled, since volume ordering minimises the per unit cost shipment. This helps decrease the cost of the photobook.

The downside is that you (as the photographer) make an upfront cash payment and you run the risk of never selling those books. But you can keep the numbers small (e.g. keep 10 copies) and if you "fail" to sell them, give the photobooks to friends as presents!

However, I prefer to put some of my own cash upfront (not much!) and keep those interested in my photography work very happy. Just think for a moment, the alternative scenario:

e.g. you enter my site, you click for the book and your are re-directed to Blurb (some frustration here…) and then you order it. It’s a bit more expensive due to the single shipment. And then imagine if you get it at your hands and something is not right (possible binding issue, possible colour faults, possible whatever else). Who would you blame? Blurb or the photographer? Surely the photographer (i.e. me!) and his crappy work!

So, I prefer to keep clients happy, even if it means more work and upfront cash for me!

Hope this helps, Yannis

@drothe

Thanks for your warm comments! This is a photobook dedicated to "Paros island" and contains 60 "different" glimpses (not so touristic etc.).

Some of my Paros photos are also here for you to see.

Thanks Yannis for the kind words and the good feedback on your sales strategy. I am thinking of buying the books myself and then reselling them via my shopping cart on my site as well.

Your work is beautiful. I hope you will find the book to be another great way of getting your work in front of many more people in the future!

This is probably the last step of this book process. I re-ordered a total of 7 additional copies of my Paros photobook for friends and for promotion purposes.

I had a raised eyebrow to check if quality would be consistent throughout all 7 copies.

I am very glad, that all 7 copies are of the same top-notch quality and binding strength and I should say that colour rendition is also a click better than the previous first-copy version.

Thanks Blurb!

Since some Blurb friends are asking about the book’s content, except from the inside-peek that Blurb provides (see here), I have also setup a Slideshow with music with some of my photos contained in the book.

It lasts for about 3-min and it is very relaxing. Download it from here..... (sorry, PC only!)

Would appreciate your comments at the guestbook if you liked it!

Regards, Yannis
