Book Printing

pictures look dark

I am doing a 280 page 13X11 book and when I print it on color laser printer the pictures are dark.  of course they are printed on small 8.5X11 paper.  they are grainny and darker than monitor.  I have calibrated my monitor with spyder so  Is this normal or does the print out look like the final book?  any help would be great.  Don’t want to print a book and have it look dark.

bigrediam, I’m just a Blurb user and not part of their staff but I’ll give you my opinion. If you have not used Blurb before you might want to send a 20 page section for your book to get a low cost test proof before you send out all 280 pages. Besure to send using same book type since you want the book printed by the same press. I suspect your book will print OK on Blurb given that you calibrated your monitor but your could be disappointed any way because it will not look exactly like your monitor, just closer than if you had not calibrated it. I usually proof on a (cheap) Epson ink jet printer using plain paper. From having printed  using Blurb and my ink jet I can get a good indication of image quality on paper (also proffing text is also easier on paper) before I send it to press. As for the color laser printer images looking grainy that’s probably a result of the type of half tone screen tone they are using the darker image could also be a result of their image processing algothrim. Neither of those things may be the same as Blurbs. Thus the test printing. Seems like a lot of extra effort but not if you consider the time you have in the 280 pages. Plus this doesn’t have to be done more than once (maybe) if you’re a fast learner.
