Gathering pictures---the best way?
General Interest

I live in the US and I have family in Australia and I am creating a family history book.

In your experance what is the best way to gather the pictures they have and be able to share ALL the pictures with all the family.

I have been told about flickr.com but it will cost $25 for our needs. Anything better?

IF, you don’t want to spend a lot of money for DLRS you might think about the Canon Powershot g9, This the camera that pro use when they don’t want to lung around their big and bulky DLRS.

about $500 USm 12 mega pixels-shoot in raw, easy to learn nd use 3’screen,

I love it. Oh and the pictures I took with it and used in my blurb book-fantastic!!!!

Where is the link for the forum. It was with, "home", My Books", "Account", "Bookstore", and "Help". Yes, it is in the drop down menu in the "help" link but it was convenient where it was.

Realistic Pricing of Books
Tips and Tricks

I’ve watched the topic for a while, here’s my two cents worth. I want to cover what Blurb is and not in regard to making a profit.

1) If you have a book that is for a mass market then Blurb is not the right fit. Think about this: Why would you or I buy a book for $100 when I can buy a similar book on Amazon for $25 (and qualify for free shipping)?

In this case you have to seek out a company that will mass product you book for $3 per unit. You have two options, A) Self-publish or B) publishing company. Both have their pros and cons.

What Blurb is and the way you can profit from it is for the limited market. So we are not in the business of selling book but rather selling specialized content and services.

read this forum chat http://forums.blurb.com/forums/3/topics/74

Notice: Pat is a photographer that shoots ballet. Her service is the time and talent of photography and sells the books as added value.

Kbradbury, sold his book to his small town. He offered content that only that town wanted or cared about. Small market, content specific to their desires.

Scooter shoot motor bikes breaking the land speed record (COOL). He easily sells to those at the event, again smaller audience.

Another way to profit is to make books for one off clients. An architect, who wants a portfolio, or a model, or a painter and the list goes on. In this case you exchange your time for $$$ $20 per hour $40 per hr $100 per hr.

So do you have content that a small number of people want and are willing pay big money for it? Or can you offer a service of time skill to those who don’t have time and skill to do themselves?

What do you think?

NEW TO BLURB.COM
Book Printing

The dullness people speak of may be b/c of the difference they see on the monitor and the actual result. But all of that is a bit beyond me.  The last book I did I raise the hue/saturation about 10%

I found that the paper could be thicker and Blurb has talked about offering options later. But no-one I have show the books to have even noticed that age thickness.

Keep in mind that a dark picture on one side of the page may show if the other side is a light color (white background).

good luck

I am going blurb crazy...
Tips and Tricks

your answer is yes, it can be done. Your next question is how. One way is to simply scan them into a program like Photoshop and turn into jpegs. Then upload them to BookSmart as you would a picture. Other have made their art into books-take a look in the book store (look under Arts)

As to you being able to draw, that I can’t answer (LOL)

NEW TO BLURB.COM
Book Printing

Hey Beheis,

The quality is the same or better than the other companies mentioned, (I believe better) I have used 5 companies and Blurb is far better  than them all. Blurb is a US company and does ship world wide. The price is outstanding. The layouts are in the software (BookSmart). I would like more templates but they have talked about more coming.

If you read the forum you will find unhappy people. Most of the time it is error on their part (lack of understanding about dpi ect) and if it Blurb’s fault they will fix it.

The book store is a great feature that other companies don’t offer (yet). The Blurb people are like friends who really listen and help. They take input from us on the forum.

Overall I personally love Blurb, as do many hundreds if not thousands who have created personal and business books.

GEDCOM (Family Tree) Slurping?
General Interest

If you look at the money you (Blurb) could make think about this. If you go to http://www.ancestry.com/ and read the stats on the home page: Just this week alone 7 million families added their family tree (from all over the world but mostly USA and UK)

If you have .25 percent of them create a book that’s about 30 thousand per week.

Also look at the templates they offer, blurb has the advantage of offering different trims, more pages, and has a large variety of existing templates…???

if you had that market guess what, will be smiling!

GEDCOM (Family Tree) Slurping?
General Interest

Kathy, and all,

Kathy you commented on my earlier post about this topic:

http://forums.blurb.com/forums/4/topics/1905

I’d just like to add to the discussion: There are those who would make a family tree book if BookSmart had the templates. So add a slurp feature for GEDCOM files but also add the templates for those who haven’t use family tree software. PLEASE, pretty PLEASE (LOL).

Those of you who have used family tree software, this is a good time to discuss forms and template that BookSMart needs for creating a family tree book within BookSmart.

Love to see this in the next update (BIG SMILE)

Margins and Tabs
Tips and Tricks

Sorry no-one has answered this. I’m not techie enough to answer. All I know is you may have to use a custom template that you create in a program like Photoshop.

If that is the direction you go there is a lot on that subject, just do a search.

Naked Pics in Erotica Book
Book Design and Imaging

Hey J

Just thinking out loud and not giving advice, OK. Thinking about all the sex tapes and nude photos that have made there way to the Internet for sale when they where meant to be private would make me careful about doing something like that so early in the relationship.

I think it sweet that you want to please your BF, I’d just hate for you to be hurt by it.

just my two cents worth
