Text Importer
BookSmart

I’ve made several books.  But I’ve always had trouble with the formatting…the fonts and sizes, lines changing, letters being cut off.   Mostly what I’m doing is copying from Word into BookSmart.  I came across the Text Importer for 5×8 text, and have followed the settings, margins, etc….cut and paste does not work, everything is still messed up.  So where is the Text Importer<cite>?…so that I can transfer directly from Word into BookSmart?</cite>   Can’t find it anywhere.  Thanks.

Happy Again!
Book Printing

Hello…it’s me again, posting another HAPPY result! This order just came from Seattle…and it is perfect. I have a 10×8 image wrap, a 10×8 softcover and 3 7×7s. No curling covers. I wish now I had’ve sent the curling covers back, but I don’t have time since they are Xmas gifts and we’re leaving shortly to go away for the Winter. One more order to come; thought it would arrive today, but should be here tomorrow.

This was my first experience with imagewrap. I had to play around with the cover, as I did not want the bottom of the image on the back cover to wrap around the inside, since the people’s feet were at the very bottom of the picture and I didn’t want to cut them off. So I added a bit of blank space at the bottom. I’ve been a bit worried about it as I didn’t know if I left too much space; didn’t want space showing on the cover. Anyhow..miracle!!! …my calculations worked out perfectly. And I truly love the image wrap look…wish it were a bit cheaper tho.

Anyhow….my two cents worth again! And if anyone wants to know how I worked out the spacing on the cover, let me know.

Happy Again!
Book Printing

Just received one of my last three orders yesterday…and just wanted to say all is well.  They are perfect, actually!!   Printed in Mass. and unlike my last order, these covers are NOT curling at all.  I received four 7×7 and one 5×8.  The 5×8 have never curled on me, but one order of 7×7 did.  Anyhow…these are fine and I am very happy.    I can’t remember where some people have said the "bad" printer is…Seattle or Mass.??   Anyhow…two orders left to come (should be here Monday)…and anxious to see my first imagewrap book….hoping it is ok.

Low Resolution and Book Publication
BookSmart

Regarding the yellow triangles – I’ve had them appear on a lot of my books, and they have ALL turned out perfectly.  My books for the most part do not contain actual photographs…some are scanned images of my children’s artwork and some are cartoonized pictures, so I figured that is why I was getting that triangle.  I took a gamble with my first book, as every picture in that book had the yellow triangle….and they all turned out fine.

Just received my order! Happy!
Ordering and Shipping

I just received my order a few minutes ago…my first experience with hardcover books. And they are perfect! I have 2 10×8 (40 pages each), one 7×7 (80 pages); also two softcovers (5×8 and 7×7). The 7×7 ARE much nicer in hardcover, as someone else had posted at one time, as well as the 10×8...hardcovers gives more substance to the books when they don’t have many pages. I will say, tho, that a couple of the corners are a bit crushed on the hardcovers, but nothing that bad that I would complain or send back (but I think they need to package them a tad better). I have three more orders coming (one with an image wrap, which will be my first as well)….and that’ll do my orders til next year. I almost wish I hadn’t found BLURB….I’m spending too much money (10 orders later)!!!! I can’t wait to get my next orders….all should be here by the end of next week!

change viewing order of books?
General Interest

Is there any way to change the order of the books as shown in our individual bookstores?  I’d really like to have my "most popular" books listed first.  As it is now, they are at the very bottom.  Thanks.

Yes, I have actually.   Every book I do in the 5×8 size messes up.  I have had no major problems with the other sizes.   Have read about problems with Word and BookSmart.

Word to BookSmart
General Interest

Just thought I’d let people know this:  When reviewing your book, things may look fine on the computer screen in BookSmart and even on a hard copy if you print a copy off.  But…when you publish the book and then preview it there….that’s when all the "stuff" shows up….mostly lines added and lines of text running into one another.   So…..it is best to publish the book and then do a quick preview there before purchasing.

Tired of the $5 Service Fee
BookSmart

I asked for this awhile back….some way of letting US decide when we want our cheques written. I’d sooner wait until I had $100 accumulated rather than $25. Hope Blurb changes that soon. Not that I’ve even had any sales yet!!!!

when designing image wrap
Book Design and Imaging

I need to have all of my photo on the cover (back cover actually), so I’m thinking of leaving a gap of 1/2 inch at the bottom so that my actual photo doesn’t wrap over.   But I’m wondering if it is that precise, as I really do not want blank area showing at the bottom on the cover.  I think Support is saying 3/8 inch because 1/4 inch is cut off right away leaving 3/8 to wrap around.   I really would prefer the entire photo to wrap around, but my problem is that I have a little’s girl’s foot right at the bottom of the photo and I think it would look awful to have that wrapped around.  There’s no way I can fix the photo as I just took it too close to her foot.  So maybe I’ll leave a gap of 3/8 just in case 1/2 inch is cutting it too close.  I wish Blurb would have it set up on the layout for an imagewrap cover so that one can tell exactly where the wrap will start.

Sending a book gift - Do not want my info & costs in package?
Ordering and Shipping

All I’ve ever received in my packages is a sheet with what the order contains…the book title and quantity.  Also on the sheet is my name and address, but I would think if you are sending it to someone else, then their name and address would appear at the top of the sheet.  So….I think you are ok that none of your info or price is included.

when designing image wrap
Book Design and Imaging

Just thought I’d post the answer I received from Support, which answers my questions perfectly:

For ImageWrap books, we recommend allowing 7/8" to 1 inch of space between your critical content and the edge of the cover page.

For this binding type, 3/8" of the outer edges of a full-bleed image will get wrapped around the edges of the hard cover. After the 3/8" wrap, your text or other content placed at 1" will now appear 1/2" from the edge of the finished cover.

when designing image wrap
Book Design and Imaging
I have a question on Image Wrap.  I know it says to not have anything critical 1 inch around.  Does that mean that the whole 1 inch will be wrapped inside the book or just a portion of 1 inch.  My problem…I have a softcover version right now…with a photo on the back cover.   The person’s feet are right at the bottom of the cover, and I’d really like the whole foot to stay on the back, rather than a portion be on the inside of the cover.  So….if I move the photo up 1 inch so that I have nothing on the bottom 1 inch….will that whole 1 inch be inside….or is it not that exact that the whole inch will be stretched to the inside?  I don’t really want a border on the outside back cover, but I don’t care about the inside.  Or should I make the border 3/4 inch or 1/2 inch???   Has anyone done a softcover AND an image wrap that could compare the two and offer some advice?  Thanks.

Hi Loretta:  You have a second little barcode beside the big one, with 90000 on it.  I didn’t get that when I made mine…I just have the one bigger barcode with the ISBN # on it.  Just wondering what that little one was for?  And how you got it…???   Maybe it doesn’t mean anything…just wondering, as mine all came up without it….

Loretta…How did you do your ISBN with the two boxes?  I only did mine with one, without the price.  I’m assuming your second is the price?  Let me know what you did to get the two.  Thanks.  Cathy

Ok….glad to hear that worked for you.  I’ll try that next time.  I did print my book out and made some minor changes, which of course got everything off-kilter again!  But I think it is good now…..will print off one final copy and proof it again before I publish it.   Yes, I know stress is BAD

Text keeps resizing its self
Book Design and Imaging

My horrendous story:  Not sure if it has to do with Word or not, but this is the second book that I’ve had this problem with, and this time was way worse than the first time.  Both books are the 5×8 black and white text (never had any probs with other sizes).  This one is 134 pages.  I’ve spent the last three days (full days, no exaggeration!) trying to fix the text, format it, etc.  Letters keep disappearing off the ends of lines, lots of spacing is being added, etc., etc.  At one point I had approx. 100 pages with one line on each of them….for a total of over 300 pages.  Some of the documents I added in from Word, some I did directly into BookSmart and some I copied from the other 5×8 text that I did.  Anyhow….I am now printing this book off on my printer so I can proof it one last time.  I’m ready to pull my hair out…and I woke up this a.m. with a cold sore….shows how stressed out I am over this.  And I’m not one to really complain much…in fact I’ve posted several posts of praise!  Yes, I know I can contact Support, and I did that when I was having probs with my last book, but by that time I had everything corrected.  Anyhow, my last three days (at least, if not more hours)…should have been work that lasted one or two hours tops, not THREE DAYS!  Anyhow…wondering if all this has to do with Word?   If so, how does one write a novel?  I can’t imagine writing the whole thing in BookSmart.  How do others on this Forum do their TEXT books, not photo books?

Hi Loretta:

Oh thanks for the comments.  My daughter actually does not know about her book, that I put it into printt.  I’m getting one for her for a gift for Christmas (might give it to her 2-yr. old instead) as a "surprise."  She’ll flip out!  I just finished my son’s book…he doesn’t know about it either.   I don’t think either one will go to my Bookstore and find them…hope not anyhow!  Wish I had more to put into print!

I DID try to find your book.  I did a search of the title and a search of your name….and nothing came up.  I clicked on your photo and your name that are there by your posting on this page….I got to your info page but could not find your books…could not find anything on that page to click to see your books.  Maybe I’m missing something?   Anyhow….this is not good news for you, if people know about you and your book and still can’t find them!!!  Unless it is just me of course!!   I would like to look at your book….so if you can post the address to your bookstore as I did I’ll look it up again.
