Add drop shadow to cover text
Tips and Tricks

Not sure what you are asking, but I often create an image with a lighter center to use as a background for text when I am using a busy or darker background image.

Locking dimensions when resizing image boxes
Book Design and Imaging

I get very frustrated when I am trying to resize an image. I am obsessive about leaving a 1/4" gutter between pictures and using the same border size. When I am in edit mode and want to increase the top edge of the image box, very often the bottom edge also enlarges. Can I STOP THIS?  There is no way to increase or alter the pink guide on the template (a suggestion I highly recommend) and I can not just input the dimensions and location where I would like the image box to rest (another suggestion).  Can I LOCK anything so that only the edge I am trying to adjust moves?

Background pictures
Book Design and Imaging

I often layer pictures to create backgrounds. One of my favorite backgrounds is to create an gradient color background In MS Publisher. Opening a text box, I fill the box with a 2 color gradient. I may start with a light blue at the top and gradient to a dark blue at the bottom. I right click to save as a .jpg image.  In Booksmart, you can overlap images. The background image is the .jpg gradient image (sometimes I may need to resize the image in PSP7), making sure the image is the full size of the page (full bleed) and is in the background. I also like using simple black border on all my images in the book to help them stand out.

1 photo to wrap the entire cover?
Tips and Tricks

I was (almost) able to create a fully wrapped cover. The spine was not included. I just split the photo in half and put the right half on the cover and the left half on the back. See http://www.blurb.com/my/book/detail/1019186

How do you distribute photos evenly across a page?
BookSmart

Got the arrows to work. Very helpful. Still would like Distribute Vertically or Horizontally option as well as thumbnail option for import.  Everything else is awesome.

Requesting BLURB feedback
General Interest

I just finished my first book and haven’t received it yet. I would love if someone from Blurb could look at the book and tell me what you think.  I know only a few pages are visible from the bookstore, but I did some experimenting with backgrounds and overlay photos. I am very excited to receive the book and have lots more projects planned, including a yearly book for all those miscellaneous photos that never seem to be printed (like deer in the back yard).  I am also starting to scan my "growing up" photos and plan to make a book of photos for my siblings and mom.  I think the price is very reasonable and I see lots of possibilities and gift ideas.  I’m very excited to have found Blurb.  Is there a place to make suggestions?  Very happy so far. How do you distribute photos evenly across a page?
BookSmart

I thought I tried the arrows and nothing worked. Do you need to use SHIFT, ALT or CTRL with the arrow keys?  Another improvement I’d like to see is when importing the photos.  I would be nice to be able to see a thumbnail of the photo.  I have hundreds of photos and need to flip back and forth between the folder with thumbnail or slideshow view just to figure out what the picture number is.  It would be so much easier to be able to see the picture in the upload window.

How do you distribute photos evenly across a page?
BookSmart

Let’s say I had 4 photos on a page and the photos were slightly different widths.  I want to make sure that there is the same amount of space between the photos.  In In MS Publisher, I would select all four of the photos.  Select Arange – Align or Distribute – Distribute Horizontally (or vertically if that is the case). Then POOF – the photos are evenly spaced between the first and last photo. I  do this often when putting books together so I am sure all my photos are evenly spaced across the page, even if they are not the same size.

So, how do I do t his in BOOKSMART?  I see Align for top, bottom, right, left and center, but how do you distribute multiple photos evenly across the page without going into advanced math?

I also find the frames for photos and text very sluggish to move. It is easier to drag one side wider, then the other narrower.  How come we can’t access the X, Y, height and width coordinates directly? Hmmm??

Programmers? Are you listening? Can you help?

PDF/X3:2002 - HELP - going from Publisher 2003
PDF to Book

Everything seems to be fine.  76 page book follows the correct dimensions by inches and points 693.0×594.0.  File-Print-Adobepdf (all dimensions are right, pdf looks fine when completed).  I see NOTHING about x3. I can find nothing in any search pages about creating this. I have Adobe Reader 8.0
