Hi Genevieve,
Just select the spine, then select “BACKGROUND” where you can select a color to match your spine.

Where did "Hire an Expert" go?

I have to agree. So many people during the holidays do not have time to design these books, often calling us in droves two weeks before christmas.

Kathy could I please get your email, I have a few question about customers I have and the rewards program? Thanks I would appreciate it.

And also could you please correct my email in your records? As a top “used to be” designer… I did not receive the notification of this switch over to CrowdSpring. So can I please get on this list for any other communications?

I actually got to talk to a representative in charge of this new section on the Crowdspring site and the news was glum. They will not be changing their business model to adapt to the needs of clients wanting books made. I, like the rest of you, know that book design is a completely different animal then say getting a website designed or a logo designed. Most clients don’t even know what they want or need to make their book great when they start the project. Lots of conversations and hand holding is involved. Not to mention upselling conversations about paper quality, book size, etc. None of this conversation can happen, except virtually. We are not allowed to communicate with the customer except on/within Crowdspring. No taking it “offline”. Customers are not sophisticated enough or patient enough to email back and forth like that and it is a recipe for disaster. Most customers just want to pick up the phone and verbally explain what they like and don’t like and you are removing the most important part of the process doing it this way.

I have made a living in this business and generated a lot of revenue for Blurb. I have pushed all my clients to use Blurb, even when they preferred a different publishing house. it’s a real disappointment because the fallback will be customers will not want to go through this process of finding Blurb, being told to go to another site, sign up, fill out forms, write their on RFP, set their own price, define the look and feel and set the budget. In all the years I’ve worked with Blurb customers, they want human interaction. Most projects are personal/vanity projects and they need that hand holding.

Designers (and inexperienced designers willing to create books for $200) who don’t have the Blurb specs (icc profiles, bleeds, etc. etc) are going to bid on these projects and produce lack luster results. This equals bad quality/designed books showing in Blurb, completely dissatisfied customers and the resources both Blurb and Crowdspring will have to devote to handling these complaints will be more expensive and time consuming than providing a resource/vendor list for their customers. Has Blurb done any polls of their customers to discover if this is something they want?

BTW….I didn’t even get the email notiication, but thankfully another designer sent it to me. It seems like most of us cannot commit the time to designing free comps for projects all day long and emailing questions back and forth on every project in hopes that all that work was for naught. Such a shame to see it go this way.

Except now people who want professionally designed books have to leave Blurb website, go to CrowdSpring, join that website….create a profile, sign forms, write a project spec requirement, set a budget (when half of them don’t even know what they want or need or what it cost without talking to us first)….under bid it…wait for bids, review bids, review participants… Really? Does Blurb feel the average person wants to go through all that hassle?

I am shocked. For 3 years I’ve worked hard to create a business around Blurb. Now it’s being turned over to CrowdSpring? Where the average bid on any project is atleast 100 designers (experienced or not by the way….) and all 100 of those designers having to create a design on spec for each bid, and spend every waking moment checking CrowdSpring for the next project to bid on. How can this possibly be a good business model for Blurb? And does the average joe who wants a seriously nice book want to go through that kind of hassle? I can’t believe we’ve just been left out to dry. I concentrated on pushing clients to use Blurb and now this?

Printing Issues/Order Issues
BlurbNation Member Forum

I’m just wondering if any one else is seeing problems with the the book orders for their clients recently. Blur has usually been great but the last three orders for my clients (all different books) have been wrong, wrong as in being sent the entirely wrong books…. Anyone else running into this issue?

I have to agree, I miss the good old days when we designers felt like a real part of this company, and we worked hard to showcase good work for Blurb.

The future of BlurbNation....
BlurbNation Member Forum

As always, I agree with Andy on this. Some of us have been making this our primary business and promoting Blurb in our marketing materials and on our websites, and more importantly, to customers who have asked us to recommend Blurb above other print on demand. It would be great to get cross promotion and marketing support from Blurb.

One. Big. Idea.
BlurbNation Member Forum

It would really be great if the books we create for clients that are uploaded into their accounts also show up in our account as a “designed by”. A good majority of my books go directly to client accounts and I’d really like to enable prospective clients see the entire body of work I’ve done on Blurb.

Newest member of the Blurb team: Me!
BlurbNation Member Forum

Hello Amanda,
Welcome to Blurb and BlurbNation. We’re really glad to have someone filling this position and look forward to working with you.

I own Picturia Press (www.picturiapress.com) and began working with Blurb in 2006. Thankfully, I have been successfully making books for the last few years. Working with Gareth, I have talked at Blurb events, written articles and worked hard to make this a viable business. I was lucky enough to be part of a small “advisory” group at the beginning of Blurb Nation. We have missed that most important element of communication and exchange of thought processes on both sides of the business. Please contact me if you need anything or if I can be of any assistance. Congratulations.

New Directory... how can we get "private" and "client account" books to ...
BlurbNation Member Forum

Andy, this is an big big issue I am running into also.  I have clients that want their books to appear in their account and their account only.  Now, from this point forward, I’m uploading one book to my account and making it private, then giving the book to the client, since this will still count toward my overall number of books produced.  The problem is that some of us have been around since the beginning – and a majority of our earlier books were uploaded only to our client’s accounts. That means, that since the inception of the NEW BLURB NATION VENDOR LISTING POLICY…. the old faithful vendors lose those books in our count.  Completely non-sensical and not fair to those of us who have been producing for years.  My account looks like I don’t really do too much, so now I am low in the list, when in fact….I should be high in the list because of the books I produced in the past that went directly to clients.  All I want is for Blurb to be fair to those of us who were around PRIOR to this new listing policy (And frankly, helped build this) and GIVE US CREDIT FOR THE BOOKS we produced beforehand. I am not getting business because of this and that is not fair or equitable.   Too much to ask? Thoughts?

Any advice for how to improve image quality?
Book Design and Imaging

If you are familiar with photo editing programs, you may want to try Adobe Lightroom to work on improving the quality.  There is some chance of improvement in Photoshop also.  Lightroom is the best for improving light and dark value to an image.

If you are not familiar with photo editing programs, it is best you source out your photographs to someone who can work with them to improve them.  Hope this helps….

Making a book from my BLOG... I need serious help!
Book Design and Imaging

Jennifer,  blogs like this can be tricky.  Other than custom designing your layouts, there are work arounds in the Blurb software.  You really have to take a good look through the extensive layouts they have for both the text and the photo schemes.  I just finished a blog book for a customer who had the same issue.  Trial and error will get you the look and feel you want to create.  Great blog!!

 Hope this helped.  Suzzanne
