Binding again!
Book Printing

Well, my 80 page books in the 11×13 just have gotten out to my customers after months in the making. I was very excited and proud of my book to say the least (The Safari Journals). My initial "prototype" book looked terrific and I reported that on this forum. Now there have been new orders made and I now I have 2 customers that have already told me the pages are falling out of my book after their first opening. I am embarassed and disappointed to say the very least. The idea that people actually paid 98.00 for a book with a broken binding is very hard to accept.

Are others still having this problem or am I a carryover from an old problem? These books were ordered around the the middle of October.

What is my process to get this fixed for my customers?  I look forward to hearing from you on this Blurb.

Regards, Dave

costs to do an edit on my book
General Interest

I have had good luck producing a large coffee table book with color images and text from 3 trips to Africa (The Safari Journals). I am very please with the book but despite my best efforts, found a couple of small formatting or typo problems (totally my fault) after reading the book once it was mailed to me.

I fully understand that Blurb has no responsibility for these problems and I need to do an edit of my book on my software and upload the entire book again to Blurb.  One aspect of this edit process that is aggrevating is that in order to get the book to show publicly and have preview pages shown with your book on the web site, Blurb makes you buy a copy each time you upload the book. This feels like it is unecessary and taking advantage of the customer.

I am sure I am not the first person that has bought multiple books just to get the book listed back into the book store. Is this really necessary Blurb? Dave

Thanks Yannis for the kind words and the good feedback on your sales strategy. I am thinking of buying the books myself and then reselling them via my shopping cart on my site as well.

Your work is beautiful. I hope you will find the book to be another great way of getting your work in front of many more people in the future!

Hi Yannis, your book looks terrific. I had a good experience with my first book as well. I notice that you sell it from your web site. Did you just buy up a volume of books from Blurb and then now sell and distribute them from your own web site?  I very much like to have my own look and feel with my book and not have Blurb as the intermediary between me and my clients. I paid extra to have my own logo but now would like my customers to come directly to me rather than go to the Blurb site to buy books. How have you handled this.  My site is:  www.ohlsenphotography.com and my book can be found at.  http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/90372

I would appreciate your instigh Yannis, Regards, Dave

Blurb Vs Mypublisher
General Interest

I posted a  note earlier today with praise for the quality of the color printing. If prepared properly with the right number of pixes, saved for output in SRBG etc. I found the color to exactly match my fine are prints. I do share your dissapointment with the thickness of the paper. This was the first thing I noticed as I paged through the book.

As the Blurb biz grows hopefully they will be diligent about driving down costs and pass this along to their customers. If they don’t people will continue to look for lower cost altenatives. Right now I think the cost is pretty much expected given the low volume, high mix of jobs they are having to produce.  Dave

Very nice work BLURB.
General Interest

After several months of pulling together my material, editing my images and writing my text I finally published my book on Sunday.

On Wednesday morning my book actually came via the UPS truck! I was surprised at the speed with which I was able to recieve it. I was anxious as I opene the box as I have read all the good and not so good reviews on books over the weeks in the forums.

I am pretty particular about my photography and was pretty much certain that Blurb would not be able to meet my standards for color printing.  I was deighted to find the color to be spot on. to my 30×40 fine art prints I have done with some of the same subject matter as in the book.  I have not had much time yet to see if the binding is strong but it looks good at first inspection.

I must say that I was delighted by my 80 page large format book ( you can find it if you do a key word search under The Safari Journals.

My only worry is that the price will be high for most people to want to plunk down 98.00 for the book. In the book stores coffee table books are a bit less expensive, especially if they only have 80 pages. I undertand the cost model however when they are ordered and printed one at a time.   I may try to make the book again in a smaller format with a paperback option for those that want it but flinch at the $100 price tag.

Thanks Blurb. I am delighted with my book! Thanks for your quick return as well!
