OK - I am really confused!
Book Design and Imaging

Hi Tony

I accept your point about reading the FAQ first – why didn’t I think of that!?

You have been most helpful! I think I can get my book designed within 30 days – got the Photoshop trial as well to export the high-res jpegs to go into Booksmart. Indesign is possibly the best page layout app I have ever used – millions of times more flexible and usable than Quark Xpress. Within an hour today of using it I felt it had been a lifelong companion!

When I import  the high-res jpegs into Booksmart and preview them they aren’t as sharp – people on here say thats just substandard rendering within Booksmart but it should turn out as sharp as my originals – is this correct in your experience?

Cheers

OK - I am really confused!
Book Design and Imaging

I want to design an amazing custom book, although as a student, I can’t afford amazing software (although was given a copy of Microsoft Expression Design through a student designers scheme yesterday!).

On this forum there is a lot of  talk about ICC and Indesign and Full page bleeds and settings.

Would someone be so kind as to explain to me what steps I need to take:

  • What size canvas do I need?
  • What dpi  (300 ppi?)
  • What colour settings? CMYK?
  • How do I export?

If Indesign is the best way to do things then what do I do? If I download a trial version will it allow me to do what I need to do (including export) within the 30 day trial period or is it restricted?

Thanks for all your help! Ed

Using Fireworks MX for page layouts
Book Design and Imaging

Hi Brian

I know MX is older and that I know about the CS3 features. As I am a poor student I can’t afford to upgrade and so I have to make do with what I have.

Today I acquired Microsoft Expression Design for free as part of a student program that Microsoft are doing through our Uni. Don’t suppose anyone knows how I should be using that instead to export to Blurb?

Using Fireworks MX for page layouts
Book Design and Imaging

I am designing a Yearbook and really want to change the page designs. Unfortunately I don’t have Photoshop or Indesign, I only have Fireworks MX.

I have created a canvas according to the dimensions on the site and at 300dpi (so it appears huge on my screen). I have exported it as a jpeg – I don’t know of any other settings in Firefox I should be using to export.

When I import the image into Blurb as a full bleed page it works, however when I preview the page and do a full zoom, it doesn’t look as clear as it does in Fireworks. Have I done something wrong or is it likely to print as sharp as in Fireworks?

Cheers!
