What happens to ordering information?
Ordering and Shipping

I have ordered two books, one a time back, one just recently and when visiting the "Recently Uploaded" or "My Books" there is no information whatsover.  What happens to the data that is displayed as "My Books" you see when you upload a book.  I do not sell my books via Blub’s online process.

This creates an uncertaintly as to whether my recently uploaded book is actually in proproduction or not.

And, with no direct access to customer support or the submission of trouble or inquiry tickets, I feel like I’m flopping around like a flounder with no access to what I recently did or the status of the books that just won’t appear as being ordered.

PDF Images
BookSmart

FYI.  There is no need to import PDF into PhotoShop then export as JPG.  In PDF, simply "save as" a JPG file directly.  You can also adjust the resolution of the PDF>JPG file in the "Settings" tab when you elect to export as JPG.  Bottom items is for resolution.

Book Design and Imaging

Another FYI.  You can render some pretty need graphics such as buttons, etc. in MS Power Point and bring them into your programs cut/paste.

Chart containing text does not display correctly
Book Design and Imaging

FYI.  I created some tables/charts in MS Word and imported them as .WMF into my graphics program = xara extreme.  (xara.com).  I then do additional layouts such as title text, photos, special effects, backgrounds, etc.  Export at 300dpi .jpg files, drop them into BookSmart.  Perfect results!  I don’t mess with photoshop at all.  Don’t need the complicated User Interface as compared to Xara.  Slam dunk!

Fully Justified Text
BookSmart

We did an entire book with test pages in it with type from 8pt upward in both serif and sans serif style, exported the pages as .jpg, inserted into BookSmart and every line of type came out crisp, clear and sharp.  It may not appear onscreen that way, which is why we invested money in doing an experimental book where we threw in a bunch of variations, of fonts, sizing, rotated images, fades, color blocks, and alot of photo edging and border effects.  All rendered 100% accurate.

How comfortable are you with working with a little code in an xml file?  If you have experience like that, you can do that.  Write me at Herb200mph@gmail.com for instructions.

Can I put images from the web in my book?
Book Design and Imaging

If you are just copying web images, the resolution might be too low for use in BookSmart, so ask the publishers for a copy of a hi-res version and permission.

Can I leave Picture box empty? Will background colour print instead of p...
BookSmart

Correct.  Any picture or text box that is left empty will allow your page to print as if it wasn’t there at all.  Of course, you have to deleted the default helper text out of the text box, otherwise it will print.  So, just make sure there are not "text goes here" messages visible for the blank print through of the background color.

Non-default fonts
Tips and Tricks

The fonts embed themselves into the file upon upload.  The upload file is a .pdf and it replicates layouts, fonts, etc. exactly.   So, if they are showing up on the screen and your local printer, should upload and Blurb Print just fine.

Someone please help us
BookSmart

Adding to the information: The book you created on your computer does not ‘time out’ in 14 days either.  The on-computer archive never ‘times out’ so if you want to make changes, recall the file, make your changes and upload to Blurb as a NEW name, as if it were a brand new book.  Viola!

BOOK DESIGNER
Book Design and Imaging

Just an observation for you.  You posted three lines of information advertising your company as a book designer.  In those three lines, there were three typos and one grammatical error.  The perception belies the claim.

Justifying Text
Tips and Tricks

C:\Documents and Settings\[yourname]\My Documents\BookSmartData\[directory]\book.xml is where the "working" file is located.  BookSmart creates this from its resources and any changes, etc. you make should be done here—NOT the ones in the program files directory.

Suggestion: dupe with another that file before you fiddle so you can restore it.

Well, you CAN, if you are computer savvy and know how to modify a couple of things in a certain file.

Found the Template XML...
BookSmart

I did the same thing and my book came out perfect.  Just remember to do both a left and right version of the page, one pointing at the other…

I think when you upload a book for printing, it is actually creating a .pdf on the fly from the templates in the .xml file, so it shouldn’t make any difference what the templates are, so long at the program accepts them upon opening BookSmart.

We already have commissions for five books based on our ability to modify the templates.

FYI.  You can also manipulate the fonts at the bottom of the file also, even to get "justified" font columns.

Song Lyrics
Book Design and Imaging

Generally, if you use previously published materials that have been copyrighted (copywritten??? LOL), and give credit to the source/author, there is no problem UNLESS that is the only thing you publish and try to sell it.

If your song lyrics are just a small part of a larger document and you give credit to the source/author in an obvious way, no copyright infringement takes place.  Taking excerpts from books, newspapers, magazines, with due credit is a common practice and therefore, they won’t come with lawyers and handcuffs to take you away.

black squares top and bottom of every page

Are they "headers" or are they graphic elements?  I’ve seen this issue reported before and it was some sort of graphic decoration applied to the pages.  I think you may have the same issue.

Quality of Text
Tips and Tricks

We recently produced a 13×11 size book as a quality/design prototype and we used both serif and sans serif fonts as low as 8pts on a color background to check for crispness, etc.  All the pages were created as composites in Xara Extreme Pro and exported as one 13×11 .jpg image and dropped into the pages.

Result = we could not have been more pleased.  All pages were perfect.

The prototype was for a job for which we received the commission to produce a commemorative book.

PLEASE HELP - bleed issues
Book Design and Imaging

Based on my prototype book for an upcoming project, I think that "live matter" should be kept at least 1/4 inch from edges, 1/2 even better—unless, of course, it is intended to bleed off the page.

I used the same background 13×11 size image for each page and kept the good stuff 1/2 inch away.  No resulting trauma.

Making new templates...
Tips and Tricks

Creating one’s own templates is a MAJOR undertaking and effort and any little mistake will crash BookSmart, etc.  I’ve created some, but the effort ranks right up there with brain surgery and being a bone doctor.  I DO NOT recommend attempting to create you own templates unless you are an exceptional tech person that understands xml coding and then has a good grasp of how BookSmart xml is assembled.  In the event I really, really, really need a special layout, creating templates is too much of a chore.
