Arts & Photography as two separate bookstore categories?
General Interest
Hi Jack – Wow! I totally missed those options! I should learn to read more closely… unless they were added in the last week, or so, after I published. :) I’m really glad I can change categories, btw. Which I just did. Thanks for responding. And pictureme – thank you too!

Arts & Photography as two separate bookstore categories?
General Interest
Hi, fellow Blurbians – Just an idea that popped into my head when I was over in the bookstore… it seems that the "art" books: drawing, painting, collage, photos of sculpture, sketchbooks, etc. are drowning in a sea of photography-only books. What would folks (staff or otherwise) think of pulling the two genres apart into two separate entities? I know this isn’t in the spirit of artistic "togetherness" and I’m not AT ALL intimating that photography isn’t "art" – no way! I was simply musing over how the category of "Arts and Photography" has become a mixing pot that contains not only books of paintings, for example, but also books of wedding photos all fit together within one category. That seems confusing for a book-buyer. Wouldn’t it make browsing easier if they were separated? I guess this leads to another question – do the staff monitor that the categories are being used properly? Anyway – not complaining… just throwing out some talking points. My best, Megan

Do they come with a box?
General Interest
If I were to mail one of my 44-pagers to a client, I think I’d slip it into a really nice, heavy envelope (e.g., http://paper-source.com/cgi-bin/paper/envelopes/presentation.html). That size is a pretty thin book. Bigger than that, yeah, I’d consider a box. I bet there’s gotta be an online resource for those… I recall getting one with my wedding photos not that long ago.

Image Size
BookSmart
Hey – Those dimensions you list are the exact pixel by pixel dimensions of each file you’ve imported. That’s not exactly the same as dpi (dots per inch). It’s a confusing relationship thing that I don’t entirely understand either. Ideal dpi for your book is 300 and anything less is going to be fuzzy, that I do know. I don’t use Corel Draw, but, in Photoshop, you can check your dpi under "image size". It will also show your pixel by pixel dimensions. The one rule I also know for sure is that you cannot increase dpi or pixel size without losing some clarity. The only way to "correct" a resolution issue is to re-scan your image at the proper resolution (or higher). As for Booksmart and what it does to images when you drag & drop ‘em, I do believe it does size them to an "ideal size" for the container. Mine would often be too big for the page and I’d have to decrease them which ended up having no effect on the resolution, but, the same rule applies here that I mentioned above… if you try to increase the image’s size, you might see the little warning triangle and not get the outcome you want (i.e. fuzziness). Did that help at all? I feel like I’m rambling. Anyway, like I said, some of its a mystery to me too, so, I hope others jump in. :) Megan

Do they come with a box?

I ordered four 44-page books (2 softcover & 2 hardcover) and they came in their UPS envelope/package and that was about it. The softcovers were shrink-wrapped, I do believe. Hope that helps. Megan

My bookstore URL
BookSmart
Ah ha! I happened upon how this can be done in another thread. Apparently, you can keep your book private, but still use the "announce" feature. It will send a special URL to the people you choose only via their email addresses. The response from Blurb staff about this feature is here: http://forums.blurb.com/forums/3/topics/268

I was curious about this too. Is it based on sales or does someone there at Blurb see something and think, "Oo! Cool!" and it becomes featured?

Hi Wendy – Didn’t see that requirement anywhere, no… and, since nothing ended up being grey w/ my high res jpgs, I’m ok with continuing to use them. thanks, Though. PS> Just found this info in the FAQ: "Make sure your images are JPG or PNG format."

Full bleed 1/8 inch trim from edges
BookSmart
I would say do all the edges. I alloted for the 1/8th of an inch (albeit, not super-carefully) and when I got my copies back, I had some close trims and some cuts offs. My solution was just to re-size and re-upload. Anyway, I say err on the side of caution because they’re not kidding on the cropping. Oh, and I saw more "close calls" on the softcover than hardcover in the 7×7" books.

Opening/importing VERY LARGE books
BookSmart
My updated experience: I started over and didn’t import/delete too many photos as I worked with the book and it ran fine. I even made my second book and it never saw any of the slow downs the first one did. So… I don’t know if the importing or the back & forth with the pictures caused the problem, but, I do know that once I stopped doing it, I had no more troubles.

Books taking longer than usual?
General Interest
Wow – Just wanted to relay two completely different shipping experiences. I ordered my first book on the 6th and it was shipping on the 13th (arriving yesterday) and THEN I ordered two more books yesterday and they shipped… today! Is this because of the content of the shipment? My first order contained both soft & hardcover and this last order was only hardcover. I’ll say it again – wow!

Postage - who wants an option to send books via the local postal service
General Interest
Most of my business will be uneffected by high postage since I’m in the US and so are most of my customers, but, I support this initiative nonetheless. It just occurred to me last night that I’ll probably have to buy one/two of my books for a friend in the Canary Islands and ship it to her myself because, well, 1. I doubt you ship there, and 2. even if you did, the shipping rate would be FAR more than she can afford. That will be my solution for now, but, I’m certainly not going to start footing the bill for everyone who orders from me outside the US. And, as others have stated, some people (incl. me, actually) would rather have more shipping options. Really, you need to answer the question of ‘why’ (things are set up this way)... I love you guys and even I am a bit wary as to what’s behind the higher shipping. Thank you.

Books taking longer than usual?

If it only takes 5-6 business days plus one business day for shipping, why won’t you get your book on time? That certainly is well under 3 weeks. You should have a ship date too – what does that say?

SO. HAPPY.
General Interest
Hi everyone – I just wanted to report on my experience with my Blurb books which arrived today. They are volumes of drawings from my drawing-a-day project. The books are 7×7", 44 pages each. I love them! The color is FANTASTIC (a VERY important thing to me since they’re books of my artwork) and the bindings are strong. I could not be more thrilled to sell these. Thank you thank you thank you! When I saw them, I got misty. Seriously!
In the bottom photo, the upper two books are hardcovers and the bottom two are softcovers. I was equally pleased w/ the quality/color of both versions, but I must say that it’s pretty cool to have the hardcover w/ its dust jacket. ;) An aside: I had a greyish tone behind my artwork ever though I checked and double checked that it was 100% white in Bookmart. Well, now that I have the books in my hands, I can say that it was an artifact from the program – there’s no grey at all in the final thing. Thank you, Blurb! I am beyond words. Megan

That is strange as I’m using the same version of the program as you are AND on an identical Mac. Sorry I didn’t have any more ideas! I hope you sort it out! Meg

Where to locate image folder on computer so "Get Photos" finds them?
BookSmart
Hi Ann – I didn’t use iPhoto either and simply created a "book art" folder on my desktop. One thing you might want to check is that the images are high resolution .JPGS Originally, mine were Photoshop files and BookSmart can’t "see" those so I had to change them. You can put your folder pretty much anywhere and browse to it in the program. Does that help? Megan
