How to spot genuine SPAM?
BookSmart

Thanks, I guess.

That area is what I call a lobster trap—once you navigate into it, there’s no way to get back to the rest of this site.

Removing duplicate images in "My Photos" after re-import
BookSmart

But files used in books in BookSmart are RENAMED and moved to a library folder within your book project. So any duplicate file finder software will not find it.

FEATURE REQUEST: Combine two books
BookSmart

I had assumed that you can copy a section from one book, open a different book with the same dimensions, select a page, and then paste, and the copied pages from the previous book would get pasted into the current book.

I just tried it. It doesn’t work. Perhaps it’s because the pages I copied from the first book uses images that are not in the second book’s library. Frankly, I am unwilling to experiment further because BookSmart is generally such a funky program I don’t want to mess with its worldview too much.

Problem adding photos to booksmart
BookSmart

What format are these pictures? If they are not JPGs or PNGs, BookSmart won’t accept them.

If they are JPGs, make sure they are in the RGB color space. JPGs that are in the CYMK color space won’t work

Customising 2-page photo spreads
BookSmart

I’ve done this:
http://www.blurb.com/books/4209986-thin-air

Assuming the full-photo page is on the left, and it flows a bit over onto the right page:

Use the BookSMart full-page graphic layout for the left page.

Create a custom page with the partial image container and the image container for the smaller image.

Calculate the size that your photo needs to be to fill the full left page and the image container for the part carried over onto the right page

Size your image accordingly and import into BookSmart

Drop the image into the left page

Drop the same image into the right page area where the image is to continue on that page

Select the image on the left page, and use the arrow keys to move it so that the left edge of the image lines up with the left edge of the image container/page

Now select the same image in its container on the right page

Use the arrow keys to move the image left until the right edge of the image is just at the edge of the right image container’s right edge

You may find that there will be duplicate pixels at the junction of the left and right pages, but in my experience, these will be down in the crevice between the pages when the book is opened (there must be a technical term for this)

Two questions ... purple border and crack inside of book
BookSmart

1) You have “Display trim guidelines”: checked. This shows a very generous estimate of what part of your pages will be trimmed during book production. If you absolutely MUST see in the printed book anything “under” the purple border, move the image so it is within the border. I have found that in fact I see more of what is within the purple border than BookSmart shows me.

2) How much of the image that you see in the “crack” between the left and right pages depends on how many pages your book has. The more pages, the deeper the crack, and so it will be harder to see the entire picture if it crosses from the left to the right page. I have done 2-oage spreads on a 240-page book, and did not find this a problem. However, I laid out the pages so that non-essential imagery would fall into the crack, so if it was “lost” it wouldn’t be a problem.

Footnotes - both page and chapter name
BookSmart

I wouldn’t do it this way (I’ll suggest a cleaner solution later) but for completeness’ sake….

When you enter the footer information, you can choose between several options. One is “Use on All Left Pages” and another is “Use on All Right Pages” or words to that effect. So make one version of your footer for left pages and another for the right. I can’t see how you can center the chapter name in the same footer as a page number without using spaces for positioning the chapter title, and that is a very fragile solution.

I suggest a better method is to use something like the set-up I used here:
http://www.jshook.com/BookSmart_Headers.html

I used the header for both the chapter and book title, on for left, and one for right pages. Where a new chapter start I made a new header and told BookSmart to use for the entire chapter.

I used a bottom footer for the page numbers, with left page and right page versions.

This all worked fine.
You don’t have to use both the chapter and book tiles, you can use just the chapter name of course.

I typically expect chapter titles at the top of a page, and page numbers at the bottom, so that’s probably why I set it up this way.

Colors change in BookSmart
BookSmart

BookSmart does not recognize color profiles. If you load your pictures into a program (like Photoshop or Photoshop Elements) that does recognize color profiles and they look as you want them to, you can ignore how the look in BookSmart.

Computer stolen. Possible to recover book from BLURB to make changes?
BookSmart

The book is processed on your local (now lost) machined before being uploaded to blurb.com. So the book on blurb.com is not something you can download and recover original image files from.

Making changes to photos
BookSmart

BookSmart does not link to your photo originals. When you import a photo into BS, it makes a copy of it, and puts it into its own library. So if you want to change a photo, delete the older one from BS and import the edited version and place it on the page.

How do I convert BookSmart's *.original files into *.jpg files?
BookSmart

Leave the * as it is. It is a “wild card” character.

*.original means: any file that matches the pattern “[any file name].original”

java workaround???
BookSmart

I get Java on the Mac just my using the Mac’s own “Software Update” item in preferences. The problem with Java is for Java applets that run in browsers. Turn that off in your browser. Then use Software Update to get the latest Java from Apple.
