132 Absolutely Perfect Pages!!!
BookSmart

Rob:  Thanks aplenty!  No issues taken.  Some of the text we just copied from client provided stuff.  I’ll mark up the prototype for the review re: your corrections.  If you find any more, shoot them to me at herb200mph@gmail.com if you will.  Easier to do that way.  The client will get a last look at the entire book anyway, so the typos were not an issue, but better we point them out ourselves.

We shall be more diligent with this stuff in the books we have commissioned after this one.  Bunches of them for 2009…pant, pant, pant.

132 Absolutely Perfect Pages!!!
BookSmart

One more thing.

Xara pages were exported as composte 300dpi JPG files and dropped into the BookSmart page layouts.

Only thing we did is use the page number footer feature after tweaking its positioning and font size/typel.

132 Absolutely Perfect Pages!!!
BookSmart

Received the prototype in advance of worldwide sales of the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club’s 2008 Regatta.  The books is absolutely perfect and the colors were crisp, clean, bright and exactly to the design.  Size = 13×11 w/ dust jacket.

You can see an online version of the pages at this link:

http://www.ipubmediagroup.com/2008-RLIR-SoftProofs/RLIR2008SOFTPROOF2.html

Production Info:  All pages were  created completly using XaraExtremePro 4.  Pages were to size with images cropped to fit the layouts.  All text was added over the photos.  Three separate images made up the page backgrounds and all photos and visual modification were produced within Xara.  Tables were created in MS Word and imported into XEP4 as windows metafiles.  Perfect results.

Bottom Line:  An absolutely perfect publication!!!!

How to videos
Tips and Tricks

Kathy:

I’ll organize a Blurb/BookSmart User’s Group with an independent website, etc.

We will put a non-affiliation disclaimer on the site so long as we won’t get jumped on by a flock of lawyers threatening to sue because we us the words Blurb and/or BookSmart on the site.

After all, a Users Group website will HELP Blurb rather than hinder and if we define the UG as an independent organization, we could create something nice.

Just tell the lawyers not to drool over some trademark infringement thing.

I’ll crank everything up next weekend and should have it online by Monday, December 10.

How to videos
Tips and Tricks

There are no videos that I know of, but I think Blurb sells a HOW TO MAKE A BOOK book for $14.95 in the Bookstore.  If you have never done a book, might be a good investment.

Regarding videos/tutorials on BookSmart itself, I am not aware of any.  There is a need for some tutorials/tips/tricks/how-do’s but not sure if it would be worth if for a third-party to develop them, given they would have to be sold to end users.

However, for something on the cost-economic side, perhaps some webinars might work on a pay-per-view basis.  Something to mull over.  I might do something along those lines over the holidays.  Can’t this week, presenting a seminar are Joomla! 1.5 at a community college, so need to prep.

I try to avoid the YAHOO type stuff.  Too susceptable spam, etc, etc.  We have our own server and I have great forum software so could host the whole deal for nothing.  After I get some of my projects done that are on my list, I’ll get back to this user group notion.

How to videos
Tips and Tricks

FYI.  What I really want to start is a forum operation that has topics, threads, email notification of postings, topic watches—something more dynamic than this one and a way for other users to help each other solve problems and increase skills in using BookSmart so they can publish more, great looking books.

Good idea.  I’ve suggested/offered to form some sort of Users Group for BookSmart.  The folks were luke-warm to the idea and said I could start one but it would not be the OFFICIAL Users Group.  That’s cool by me, but I need to figure out how to do it without them getting riled up over using Blurb or BookSmart names in the operation.

Anyway, I’ll be glad to review any videos you crank up and collaborate if you want.

text over images???
Book Design and Imaging

If a BookSmart user is just a tad smarter than the average bear and wants to do some experimenting, its amazing how creative the pages and content can get.  My pages all have custom backgrounds with photo/text overlays, etc.  Once you learn how to modify the templates (not recommended for the average user who doesn’t have computer moxey), you can set up the pages as you want and create away.

Check out www.xara.com for the xara extreme pro program.

text over images???
Book Design and Imaging

First, I modified a template page by removing the header, then positioning the footer for the x-y location I wanted on the page.  Once that was done for BOTH right and left pages (they are not the same), I modified the default font for the footer for a specific font, size and color (white).  After that, it was all automatic.  The white folio printed over (or knocked out of) the color photos.  Each page was a full bleed photo or custom background.

Second, I created all page layouts in Xara Extreme Pro including type, which in some instances was justified.  I made sans and serif font test pages down as far as 8pt and with various other combinations and they came out perfect.  They printed fine locally and the result was the same in the final product.  Xara exported the pages at 300 pdi and it was just a matter of dropping one pix per page into BookSmart.

Everything I did, testing wise, came out as intended or anticipated with excellent quality throughout.  All my tints, knock out, overlays, etc. etc. printed as designed.  It was really easy to do when using only one template and not inserting any text via BookSmart itself (other than page numbers).

My book was a prototype and I have an actual commissioned design and production job to do the final version in January as a result.

text over images???
Book Design and Imaging

I just did a complete 13×11 book with pages created outside of BookSmart with text over photos in all kinds of combinations.  My text test pages had type as small as 8pts and it came out crisp and sharp.  I modified a page layout for a single full-bleed photo with only footers for page numbers.  Perfect results.  All the folio numbers came out white reverse on the photos.  I used BookSmart to generate the page numbers.  Every page was a composite 13×11 image with all textual information embeded before importing the .jpg file for each page.

Layering images and text
Tips and Tricks

Just received a design prototype 13×11 book in which I used nothing but 13×11 images with text and imported into BookSmart.  Text even as fine as 8pt came out crisp and sharp on all kinds of back ground variations.  The 62 page book had no imaging flaws and printed exactly as we intended.

How do I include a table from Excel?
Tips and Tricks

I just exported PP to JPG and imported into BookSmart.  It was at the wrong resolution because you cannot "up" the resolution to 300 dpi.  BookSmart tagged the image with an alert.

However, taking the SAME image, importing into XARA, then exporting it back to JPG at 300 dpi produced a prefect result at the page size.  I worked in 13×11 format.

Excel to pdf also works, but you cannot edit that for final little fixes nor tweak sizing, etc.  If you go Excel to Xara as wmf, you can edit every little section of the spreadsheet in Xara as graphic/text elements.

Have not tried PP output, but will give it a try and report back on it.

How do I include a table from Excel?

UPDATE

Formatted Excel spreadsheet can be copied and pasted as a wmf format directly into Xara.

When it gets into Xara, all the components of the spreadsheet are individually edited image items.  Select ALL again and Group to get it as a scalable and placable image.

Hope this does it for you.  It will work perfectly for my project.

How do I include a table from Excel?
Tips and Tricks

SOLUTION:

Create the table in Excel.
Import the Excel file into MS Word (not sure if colors, etc. will transfer)
Select All, Copy
Go to a graphics program (I use Xara Xtreme Pro, PhotoShop should work too)
Paste the Selected as a Windows Metafile Format
Save the file with your added headings, backgrounds, setc.
Export as a 300dpi .jpg file.
Import the file into BookSmart and place it on a page.
Print the page to test the layout and resolution.

I just did this but skipped the Excel to Word part (shouldn’t make any difference) and the print was crystal clear.

FYI  Xara Xtreme Pro works absolutely magnificent in preparing pages, layouts, graphic effects, etc. for import into BookSmart as 300dpi .jpg files.

How do I include a table from Excel?
Tips and Tricks

Same problem.  I need to publish a columnar list in a 13×11 book.  I am preparing to print a book full of experimental layout variations to see what does and does not work as the end product.

I am going to create MS Word doc that is a table, then print to .pdf, then convert to .jpg and then crop and chop.  I will insert the .jpg into the page and see how it prints.

Will post a "results" message here when completed.

Center photo on a Blurb page using Photoshop
Tips and Tricks

The difference I have found between LEFT and RIGHT pages is that, the footer/header for example on the 13×11 books, is x=81 from the left on the left page.  On the right page is is at x=120.  So it appears there is a 39 pixel offset.

However, I do what you do…design the pages and import .jpg’s into the layout.  Seeing that I design symetrically, I simple allow just a tad extra for the gutter section and don’t do any layouts that are pixel precise critical.

Trying to use my own CS3 pages instead of your templates-not working!
Book Design and Imaging

FYI.  I develop in size 909×783 for the 13×11 book.  That is the page size that BookSmart uses in its page definitions.  I modified one of the pages to put the footers as page numbers in a specific x-y coordinate and build my pages with that location in mind.  I use a full page layout from my program for all the pages and everything seems to go in okay.  No alarms or warnings, etc.

We do the same thing, but develop pages in Xara Extreme Pro, importing photos and putting text over the image.  It looks terrible on the BookSmart display…but, if you print out the page, the type is crisp and clear like it should be.  We are doing a "text" book of about 50 pages using all sorts of techniques to try different things.  It will go off to Blurb next week.  Stay tuned…

Forum Format/Operation is an Antique Operation
Web Features

For one, vBulletin at www.vbulletin.com would be a perfect one to use.  $160 to own it perpetually, $80 for a one-year lease.  Its easy, powerful, fully featured and will make your BookSmart users much happier.

I’d even volunteer to moderate the board, or event set it up on our server if you want under some sort of "User Group" domain name, etc.

Yes, I previously stated my comments about the Forum and repeated it again above insomuch as some sort of improvement was made.

Do at the moment?  $99 and two hours time could put up a complete full-featured forum that the folks at Blurb could put in a page wrapper and integrate into their website.

This thing is just so clumsy and under-featured…

The new forum is a clunker.  Before, all we had to do is look at one list of postings.  Now, we have to navigate into six sections on a very, very outdate forum format software configuration.

Why not just dump this thing and install a $99 package that allows better front end visuals, topic threading, notifications of replies, etc. etc.  There are probable a dozen such packages available on the "cheap" that you could put in place of this programmer created, task intensive, under performing forum.

Please?????
