Forgot what paper choice I used in InDesign template
PDF to Book

Alida,

Most of the photos were taken with camera at waist level, with me not looking thru viewfinder. Kids were happy to have photos taken, as were families we got to know well.

Glad you enjoyed the book, it was my first using InDesign and PDF..

Forgot what paper choice I used in InDesign template
PDF to Book

I started work on the pages part of the project some time ago, using InDesign CS4 and Blurb template. I have since forgotten which paper I chose to use with the template. I need to know that paper choice when I do the cover. Any way to discover what  paper choice I used in a page template after the fact?

Many thanks..

Cover Design
PDF to Book

J2bbayle, I would be interested in your templates for Apple Pages.  Any way to post them or a link to them?

How are you converting Pages PDF to the PDF that Blurb needs?

Word styles and paste problems
Tips and Tricks

Thanks Sophie,

I was afraid of that. Can’t directly import Word due to the physical size of my book, which has equal amounts of text and photos. The cut and paste limitations are a real hassle.

Apple Pages PDF OK?
Tips and Tricks

Can I use Apple’s Pages layout program to desigh the book? It can save to PDF, but I am not sure if it is the right kind of PDF. I am using 10.5.8, and the most recent version of Pages.

Thanks,

Bruce

Word styles and paste problems
Tips and Tricks

Is it true that you can not cut and paste word .doc files and keep any style/format? That seems to be what I gather from the forum, but it is hard to believe. I have many pages of Word text, with  paragraphs and sentences in italics scattered thruout the body text. It all pastes as body text, no italics. Instead of coming in at 11pt as per Word, it is pasted in as 12 pt..

It is a major hassle to go thru pages of pasted text and find what should be italic and change it.

Any solution?

Color bit depth on a Mac?
BookSmart

It has been reported that Booksmart runs much faster if you set the color bit depth to 16 from 32. I don’t see that option on a Mac (G4, 10.5.2). Any one know how, or a workaround?

Thanks, Bruce

TIP: Never cut and paste direct from Word!
BookSmart

Will "textedit" on a Mac do the same thing?

Best font size for text?
Book Design and Imaging

My book will have many pages of plain text. It is hard to guess how the text will look, size wise on the screen. Any reccomendations as to what size to use? 12p? 11? Smaller? What size do regular books use? Also any font family reccomendations for readability?

My first book was nearly all photos, so hard to use it as an example. The photos came out great.

Thanks

First book, pleased
Book Printing

ChristyK, not sure the best way to post pics from the actual book. You can see what the cover looks like by searching for "Skyus" at the Blurb bookstore. There is a preview of the first 15 pages there as well, but the PDF res is low…. does not do justice. this was a trail book, just to seehow photos might come out, so not too finished.

First book, pleased
Book Printing

Just got my first book, 38 pages hardcover, 10×8, darkroom style.

I was nervous cuz of all the forum posts, but the book exceeded expectations. Compared to Apple iPhoto book, much nicer.

After reading the forums, I did the following:

Made sure all photos were sRGB.

In Photoshop Elements, resized all to 300 dpi

Worked to avoid underexposed parts of images.

Used fonts in Bookspart, not from Photoshop.

Lightened most photos about 10%.

Book arrived exactly when promised, slip cover is great, binding great, full bleeds great.

For next book I would:

Maybe lighten most photos even more, say 15-20%.

Tweek contrast up say 10% on more of the photos.

My experience so far is that reading the forums pays off, don’t be discouraged by those who had  a bad experience, prepare photos as above.

I didn’t use the soft proof method, as I am working on a Mac laptop. Laptop screens are so variable re viewing angle, I can’t imagine that adjusting the screen colors via Spyder and downloading a ICC pref would be useful. Anyone have thoughts on laptop screen corrections/solutions? As it turned out, photos in book were very close to screen photos. I was careful to view the screen at 90 degrees.

Good luck with you projects,

Bruce
