Update:

This is real fun. I described 3 methods that failed above and now I just stumbled on a 4th that works.

If you use the Paste as Plain Text it works! This is ironic, because Plain text should take the style in use, for example Body or Caption. Instead, it keeps the webding or wingding format.

But this gets better, once you have the webding font in Booksmart, it now responds to the font dropdown. In other words, you can now change that font from web to wing etc. However, if you try something that hasn't been pasted as plain text it still refuses the web or wingding font.

P.S. if you do a forum search, you'll see that this a Booksmart bug that others have reported. Any way, this Paste as Plain text, while counterintuitive, is a workaround.

jshook: i'm doing this in the middle of a paragraph so that's not an option. I've played with InDesign before and it's overkill for what I'm doing.

Tony: "obviously aren't supported" on my PC (dual OS - windows XP, Vista) means this:

1. Using Charmap application (Start Menu, Run, Charmap) and selecting and copying any wingdings or webdings character and pasting them in Booksmart will not work.

2. Using Microsoft Word and cutting and pasting text containing characters formatted with wing or webdings does not work.

3. Using Booksmart and selecting the font from its dropdown will not work.

What does "does not work" mean? For example, the lower case letter rin MS Word becomes a white triangle when formatted with the wingdings 3 font. Try that in Booksmart and it either does nothing or it reduces the font size. You still see the letter r.

Type a full paragraph of text and the change the font to windings or webdings, nothing happens. Change a style to wingdings or webdings (Body for example) and apply it....NADA.

If the rendering is done on the PC, as you say, and not on the server then either it doesn't work or booksmart is not WYSIWYG. I haven't tried uploading to see if the rendering is done on the server side.

How the hell are you getting those fonts to display???

Booksmart displays many fonts but which one does it support?

For example, Windings and Webdings are displayed in the dropdown but don't they obviously aren't supported. I'm trying to insert an arrow but the standard font one is too small → and increasing the font size will screw up the font spacing.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks it's abusive to pay for logo removal.

Logo removal cuts deeply into profits, that's why it can actually be bad for Blurb, bad for business overall. For example, it can take 6 months to 1 year to write a textbook - but all your customer cares about is the price.

Consider this scenario. I leave the logo on to maximize my profit (or at least breakevn) and charge a high price which factors in the time I spent writing and designing my book. Corporation looking to buy several hundred copies, buys 1 copy for evaluation. They see the blurb logo and investigate the site. They aren't interested in being Blurb customers, they arent' interested in self-publishing, they're only interested in my cost. They conclude my cost is much lower than my resale and feel ripped off. No sale. They don't factor in the hours spent.

Consider this scenario. No blurb logo, customer can't do any cost/profit analysis. He's happy, and I make a decent profit.

How about a compromise. Blurb waives the custom logo feel on orders of 100 books or more?

I don't like the 7X7 format and the 5x8 in BW only.

Any chance Blurb is coming out with 5x8 or 6x9 color. This would be for manuals and textbooks rather than photobooks which need a larger size.

The 8x10 is a nice format but much too costly for a self-published author.

The more I work with Booksmart, the more bugs and annoyances I find.

Try selecting a large body of text - the mouse just can't seem to get to all of the lines.

Try clicking into some text, the insert point can end up somewhere else.

But the worst annoyance is with formats. Change your Body style to Verdana 12 and format a page. Insert new text inside some text and chances are you will get Georgia 9 instead. This at least is obvious to catch, what isn't as obvious are your carriage returns - you expect a large white space between lines because you have 12 point but you realize Booksmart has set it back to 9.

Select some text and it will sometimes tell you which font type and font size it is based on the dropdown. At other times it will just show the default font even if its not the one selected - totally inconsistent.

For every hour I spend writing my text, I think I spend an hour correcting Booksmart.

Why bring out upgrades with new features when the existing core is full of bugs?

This is driving me nuts. I have two paragraphs in Microsoft Word that are separated by a carriage return (the return symbol shows up in word to confirm this.). When I copy these two paragraphs to Booksmart in a standard text template, they appear in the middle of the page with the proper break.

When I preview the page, in Booksmart, they also appear properly with a carriage return between them.

However, when I preview the book in Flash online, the carriage return is gone and the paragraphs appear as one big ugly block of text. This is the ony page that does this.

Is the online preview flawed????? Reuploading does not fix this problem.

How will the final book turn out?

I usually keep the downloaded version of booksmart I'm working with - sadly I didn't this time - hence this post. So I'm not upgrading yet. I may just bite the bullet and install on a new PC using my existing book files.

As for installing in a different directory it depends on the install process - what does Booksmart install in the Registry. Some applications allow it, others don't behave well.

Regarding backup.....I have multiple versions backedup, both locally and on external media. My point was more from a community perspective....look at the number of posts where people have lost their work as a result of an upgrade.

Tony, regarding belts...I"m neither UK or U.S. based, so I wouldn't know.

:)

My point was more from a community perspective….look at the number of posts where people have lost their work as a result of an upgrade.

Tony, regarding belts…I"m neither UK or U.S. based, so I wouldn’t know.

:)

</body-html>

Can you please leave older versions of BookSmart for download in case the new version buggers up? Nothing like spending weeks or months preparing a book to discover the new version has totally destroyed your formatting, Time is money.

Or allow us to install the new version and keep the previous one.

Thanks

Hi again

I tested with a new file and the same problem exists. I then moved to another computer on my home network, downloaded booksmart, and started with a fresh file. Once more, this is an issue with Booksmart, not with the file. Here's how easy it is to reproduce:

Maybe calling it a bug is too harsh, but it is a major annoyance and designers should be aware of it because it could cost them hundreds of hours in repairs.

A normal Booksmart template will adjust itself automatically for left page and right page. A custom layout, unless entirely centered, will not adjust itself and the headers will appear to move out of alignment. Actually, it's not the headers, it's the rest of the boxes that don't adjust for the change in side (left or right).

The solution, if working from a Booksmart template as a starting point, is to create two custom layouts - one for the left and one for the right, or to ensure that the layout page is always stays on the proper side - if not the headers and footers won't match the rest.

Kathy...thank you for the quick response. From the image below you will see what I mean and that this bug still exists in 2.02 which I just installed and tested.

Re: Booksmart build 2.0.1.29172

There is a major bug in the Custom Layout function of Booksmart. It apparently appeared in earlier versions and was reported to big fixed. It's not.

Editing a standard layout, at least from the 8x10 Portrait Hardcover, and adding a textbox will throw the header and footers out of alignment. For example if the header coordinate was supposed to be at X=1, it might become pushed over to X=0.62. Same applies to the footer.

The suggestion posted here to choose a normal page layout and then reapply your custom layout doesn't work. The only solution that seems to work is the following.

In Edit View, Select Show full spread so that you have two pages on the screen. Edit the left page and save it (add a suffix of Left to the name). Edit the Right page and save it (add a suffix of Right to the name).

Now you must use the left version for left pages and the right version for right pages. Obviously if your book is compete and you haven't noticed the header and footer alignment problem you are quite screwed as changing the layout will delete the content.

It's hard to believe Blurb has not removed this function from Booksmart or given a warning to users.
