Your forum posts visible to visitors....Beware!!
General Interest

Hi Maggie,

Big thanks for getting into this thread with your  comments.

I sell my artwork & photographs through www.fineartamerica.com and I get weekly updates of comments on my work, sales and full details of visitors and buyers.

It would really be very useful from a marketing point of view to at least know from which country our books are ordered.

The visible forum posts question is quite urgent. That cannot be right that Tom Dick Harry and Fred can read them….

But, hey! Thanks again.

PD

Font Size
Book Design and Imaging

I used Times at size 12 which looked good when I was putting the book together — but I should have used 11 or even 10 for a more professional look.

Size 12 does look slightly kid`s-bookish…

But overall I`m very happy with my book which has a very nice finish and quality about it. Great printers this time around.

Thanks, Tony, I was wondering when you`d pop up. You seem to be very active in these forum threads — thank goodness.

You see what I mean about the posts being visible to Tom, Dick & Harry…? That can`t be right. Yes, Mr Blurb does stick his head in here sometimes — but does he take any notice…?

Your forum posts visible to visitors....Beware!!
General Interest

I`ve just realised that if a potential buyer clicks on my log-in name on my bookstore page they can then see all my forum posts.

I think this is very wrong. The posts could be about print quality or profit margins etc etc. Points you might not want your potential buyer to read. Check your own posts and see if you are happy for visitors to be reading them…

And still waiting for answers to two other posts:

1/Why can`t we get some infomation on people who buy our books? Just the country they come from would be useful to know for marketing purposes. We are generating the sale — we should be told. `Freedom of infomation…` and all that…

2/I don`t have an `Author`s Bookstore` tab on my book pages. Why…? It is very useful when looking at a book to be able with one click to see what else is for sale…

Just realised: this post will also be visible to my buyers………

`Author`s Bookstore` tab missing....
General Interest

Just noticed that when I view other people`s books a grey `Author`s Bookstore` tab  is shown which takes you to the author`s other works.

Very useful for visitors to see your other books.

But it`s missing when I view my books. Any ideas why…? How do I get this tab up and running…?

…And would still like to see some background info on sales — at least from which country does the sale originate. Useful to know when marketing one`s work.

 Thanks.

Very bad experience : photo rendering !
Book Printing

To be honest, your approach sounds over complicated.

I`ve done three books — and although I`m certainly not happy about the costs involved — I`m very happy with the photo quality.

I was concerned having read other comments on pictures too dark, washed out etc. But mine were all fine. I`d even forgotten to upgrade some of the images from 72dpi to 300dpi and I had no loss of definition.

Perhaps your monitor is way out regarding reproduction of colours…

Of course, you could always send the book back, detailing your complaints.

Luckily I made a written note of my sales.

Any ideas where they`ve gone — when they will be back…?

They want you to pay up front, of course.

Just noticed Blurb charge $1 to add up profit totals at the end of each month. Their damn computers do that automatically!

Tracing buyers.....
General Interest

Is there any way of tracing those who order one of your books? I don`t mean I`m gonna go round and bang on their door and kiss `em on both cheeks. But simply to know which country they ordered from for instance.

It would be useful to know as it might show where my various promotional links are working…

Thanks.

Price Increase
General Interest

Had no idea prices had increased. Just published a new book and sales initially are better than expected — but guess what: I ain`t making anything out of it. The tiny profit will be lost in PayPal charges.

Have to agree. Use Blurb for your own vanity publishing — don`t expect to become a successful published `author` just because you have a `self-published` book on this very expensive site.

Even I wouldn`t pay over 30 dollars for my book!!!  Twenty to twenty-five, yes — but these high prices are off-putting for buyers. And have to agree on the author`s own discount. It amounts to zilch. Do me a deal and I`ll buy the damn books myself and sell them off my own sites.

I`m just preparing a tradebbok with b&w and colour images. What pitfalls should I look out for in the preparation of the images and the final print…?

Is `trade` format suitable for good quality colour photos and text? Is `...
Book Design and Imaging

Dear fellow Blurbers,

Your advice greatly appreciated.

I`ve spent weeks putting together my new book. I chose `trade` format for the size and the eventual — inevitably high — cost.

But the description for `trade` doesn`t sound like it is ideal for a book like mine with mostly text but with a fair number of b&w and quality colour photographs.

Have you printed a `trade` book with colour photographs? Were you happy with the results and quality of paper? Is the paper white or off-white?

Many thanks for your replies. Art

Pages warping as soon as they come out of the plastic wrapper
Book Printing

The top corners of the pages of my large landscape photo books are warping. I`ve only looked at them two or three times prior to wrapping as presents, so it is not from excessive use.

Looks bad when you open the books.
