Updated Book Preview
Web Features
100% agree with Tony about being able to specify where your 15 pages for preview begin. It may even turn out that it might be, say, pages 45-60 that you want to exhibit. Is such an option possible / feasible? I also agree, though, that your tune-up to the Preview function is excellent! Thanks! Teri

Next Release of BookSmart: Some Suggestions Part I
BookSmart
Hi Victor, Those are great suggestions (particularly the ability to make custom templates and have Polaroid frames – that would be so much nicer than trying to make them in PS on my own). Just so you know, it IS already possible to export your book to PDF for others to review. Just use the Print function inside BookSmart and have it print to whatever PDF printer/driver you have. I have used DeskPDF with good luck, and many people report good results with CutePDF. The file will then save wherever you want on your computer for easy emailing, etc. Keep in mind, this function sometimes takes quite a while to complete, depending on the size and photo-intensiveness of your book (I don’t think "intensiveness" is a word but oh well.) Some other forum posters suggest setting the process running before you go to bed or work. Hope this helps fulfill at least one of your wishes. Teri

Flash Flippin' Preview Instead?
Web Features
Well, Tony, I figure you had no way of knowing that the new Flash previews would be so slow… :) I am finding it extremely slow as well. I often enjoy taking a few-minute break at work (shhhh) and checking out the newly published books as well, which is made much more difficult with the slowness of the Flash previews. I wonder if Blurb staff could comment on whether or not they could possibly institute a method for people to choose, for each book, whether they would like to preview in PDF or with the Flash function? I would generally always opt for PDF. Teri

Can you see this printing (dot screen) fault?
Book Printing
I am astonished that Blurb staff say that they cannot see the difference in those images. They are clear as night and day, and when you have just spent $900 on your order, I also would find their response VERY disturbing. Like Lee, I have had an excellent all-around experience with Blurb (customer service, print quality, etc). I certainly expect that they will square up with you in the end (not that that excuses the hold-ups you are having now). Good luck in your correspondence with them and rest assured, your eyes are fine (assuming I can say that, given the strength of my prescription). :) Teri

tiffs to jpgs to be able to load?
BookSmart
Sharon, I am surprised that Photoshop is not allowing you to save the file as a jpg. Even using "Save As?" I have done this many times. Maybe someone has other ideas on that problem…. in the meantime, I have even used Paint, the simplest program ever, to save tiffs as jpgs since my scanner only outputs in tiff. I have never had a problem with Paint doing the conversion, either. Maybe that’s worth a shot. :) Teri

Copyrighted Material , Pictures, Quotes Etc ...
Book Design and Imaging
Another option would be to look at some stock photo sites. I especially like istockphoto.com. Yes, you have to pay for the photos, but when you use them you don’t have to worry (generally) about copyright issues as, in my understanding, you are buying some rights to the images. For a while Blurb in conjunction with istockphoto was offering a 20% deal to people who were new to sign up at istockphoto. I don’t know if that is still going on, but worth a look. :) Teri

Front Cover Problem
Tips and Tricks
Hi Jason, Unless I am misunderstanding your issue, it sounds like the easiest thing to do is keep your dark red background and change the color of the text in each text box? You can have different colors for all of your text, even within one text box. Once you are working inside your text box, just select your text and click the button that looks like an "A" (like in Word), which will allow you to select new colors. (I am pretty sure that’s the right button, sorry, I am not near the B ookSmart program at the moment). Hope this helps. If I misunderstood your problem, please disregard. Teri :)

How do I permantenly delete Header & Footer for each page?
Book Design and Imaging
Barbara, I would recommend you search the FAQs and other forum threads (for instance, this one is very recent: http://forums.blurb.com/forums/1/topics/3171), which hopefully should address these concerns. If not, please write again! Teri :)

Page #s & headers keep reappearing after turning them off
BookSmart
Hi David, I have had similar issues with page numbers reappearing, although it is not quite the same as what you describe. For instance, I have never used the Export/Backup function within Blurb – when I back up books, I just manually go to the Booksmart folder on the C drive and drag it to the disk I am backing up to. So that is a difference, plus the fact you are using a Mac (best computers ever!). However, I too have found in my Blurb history that page numbers and headers can be very sticky and difficult to remove. I usually choose None, then Apply to All, and the information remains in the headers/footers. Usually when I do the step a second time, the changes hold. I would recommend not doing this step until you are completely done with your book (meaning, done adding pages) because each time you add a page, in my experience, page numbers and headers/footers reappear. So the reapping information problem is definitely not just you, it’s a BookSmart problem, in my opinion. However, the good news is, I have never had a book print with unwanted headers/footers after I have cleared them out as I described above. Just be sure to do a VERY COMPREHENSIVE review of your book at 100% size or more in Preview mode IMMEDIATELY PRIOR to hitting that Order button, without backing up in between, reopening the book, anything like that. You should be safe then. I would also parenthetically recommend checking ALL text boxes for text such as "Add Caption Here" and removing anything stray you find because I have had these little prompts print, and they are noticeable, even if in black text on black background. GOOD LUCK! :) Teri

Table of Contents - has anyone made one that ended up "looking" decent?
Tips and Tricks
Hello Jeanine, I would invite you to take a look at my book about my dog (http://www.blurb.com/books/188443) which has a table of contents with about 13 entries. I used a larger font, but I am sure that there would be plenty of room for 25 chapter entries. I apologize, I am away from my Blurb computer and can’t tell you for sure which template I used, but I think it came out looking okay. I believe that I justified right with a standard number of spaces in between the page numbers and the chapter title. If I can be of any other help, please let me know. :) Teri

i'm a total newbie and I jumped in with both feet!
Book Printing
Hello all! Regarding my comments – "Also, I wish now that I had known about Blurb before plunking down money for the photographers to do the album – I am currently working with them on getting them to "design" a decent album. With all the going back and forth (this picture is out of chronological order, they won’t accept more than 70 picture selections – please!, etc.) it is a major pain in the butt (and they charge if you need more than 2 revisions!). SO much easier to do it with Blurb, as you can do whatever you want with as many pictures as you want, etc. So in your place I would be GLAD that I didn’t pay for them to develop your album!"I just returned from a very refreshing vacation in lovely San Diego and found my above-referenced wedding album from the photographers waiting at my office. I would now like to vigorously reaffirm my above comments. I personally am not all about an album consisting of about 20 heavy, thick 1/8-1/16" pages, and the generosity (?) of a photographer who requests that you choose no more than 70 pictures out of 2000-3000 choices through which they will attempt to render an accurate representation of your wedding day. Unless you don’t want to develop your album yourself, I would recommend anyone to NOT pay the extra charges to have your photographers develop your album for you. For as much as it cost me (I can’t recall now, I think I have repressed it), my album made through Blurb (containing more than 400 photos) was made at a fraction of the price; had a personal touch and was much more representative of the wedding day (I was actually there); is much more contemporary in style; and is in sum far preferable to the photographer’s album. If anyone asks to see my wedding album, I will always show them the one I produced through Blurb first. Just thought I’d share my input for anyone preparing to make this sort of decision about whether or not to have their album professionally developed or to make it themselves through Blurb. :) Teri

backgrounds changing after upload to Blurb
BookSmart
I recently had an issue with the pdf preview once my book was uploaded. It showed in one box an entire picture, when I had zoomed in to show only a small fraction of the picture. I was reassured promptly by Customer Service that this is a known issue with the pdf preview (showing different content than what you uploaded) and the file you uploaded will print as uploaded. Mine in fact printed just fine. I agree with Lee – you will more than likely get exactly what you uploaded – if not I am sure Blurb will take care of it for you. Teri

Recieved my first book!
Book Printing
In reference to Tony’s comments, I have also experienced the black text on black background phenomenon once, but it wasn’t even in a header or footer - it was ONE text box on ONE page that contained (I believe) three text boxes - in ONE box was printed the prompt "Add Caption Here." Go figure! Of course my brother was nice enough to point it out before I had even noticed it. :) So on my last publish (different book), I did as Tony mentioned also, and went through and "selected all" in every possible text box and deleted any black text I found. Kind of a pain in the butt, but worth it in the long run. I am still using 1.9.2 also, as of my last publish. As Rob noted also, I also go through at the very end, and apply "None" to all pages in both headers and footers if you are looking to remove page numbers, etc. However, I have found that the header/footer contents can be very sticky and remain even after I do this step. ?? Sometimes I remove the contents, select "None," apply to all pages, but the text remains, marked as a "Custom" header/footer. If I go back through a second time and mark it "None" and apply to all pages, it seems to work. Don’t know if this helps or worsens everyone’s consternation, but that’s my two cents. :) Teri

That has to be a printing glitch, I’ve never seen anything like that, especially printing from the same file. I would certainly think that you should contact Customer Service about that, see if they will reprint it for you!

Images look pixelated when preview is at 100%
Book Design and Imaging
It likely is just the preview quality. I have noticed this also, and it’s been mentioned elsewhere in the forums that Blurb relies upon a low-resolution preview format that cuts poor, slow, and aging computers a break. Based on my understanding, your book will be uploaded with photos in their original high-resolution format, and will print just fine. Hope this helps. Teri

White type on black backgroung
Tips and Tricks
I would add too that I have found black backgrounds to very effectively show off my images – in my eyeball’s opinion, for what it’s worth, I find that the black background allows the colors to "pop" more than on white. Fingerprints are admittedly an issue on the black pages, so I try to hold them gingerly… :) As for white print, I can speak to having printed books with both white and ivory text, ranging in size from about a 10-12 point to about a 40 point font (nothing too delicate) – all have turned out remarkably on a black background. After reading Amelia’s comments, I would also toss in that my book’s cover was predominately (90%, I’d say) photograph, so not much blank color. Further, the cover is admittedly VERY matte, which dulls vibrant colors somewhat, so those are some things to keep in mind. Personally, I was very pleased, but I can see how someone wishing for a more accurate representation of vibrant color may be disappointed.

Just to follow up, I received my ImageWrap book Friday 5/30 and it looks EXCELLENT. I very like the matte cover and in my opinion it makes the book look much more professional than those with dust jackets. Anyway, since I started the thread, I thought I would report back. Blurb rocks – again! :) Teri

Pictures move from where I put them.
BookSmart
Tony, Perhaps I am misunderstanding either the issue or your comments, but I have been able to do just what Monique is talking about by either 1) dragging the picture around the container once the picture is selected, or 2) using the arrow keys to move it around, and I have had very good luck positioning pictures smaller than the image container. Otherwise, I unfortunately don’t know why you (Monique) are having the pictures reset themselves on you? I have never experienced that. Hopefully I am understanding the issues correctly. If not, sorry and please disregard. :) Teri
