Hi, Im new here and need advice
Book Design and Imaging

You don’t say what shape or size pages and I really have some misgivings about downloading some one’s templates who I don’t know.

If you go through the blurb site and search on page sizes you will be taken to a list of the full bleed sizes for various book sizes. Move back ⅛" for cuts and another ⅛" for a safety zone where needed and you should be fine.

Photo book advice required
Book Design and Imaging

Standard Landscape
Cover (full bleed): 3059 × 2555 px – 10.197 × 8.517 inches, 25.9 × 21.63 cm
Page (full bleed): 2888 × 2475 px – 9.627 × 8.25 inches, 24.45 × 20.96 cm

Remember this is for FULL BLEED. It will possibly be cut ⅛" in from this and if it involves text, or items you really really don’t want cropped, you should move back ¼".

In practice, Blurb has been nearly excellent in cutting and cropping very very precisely but …

Good luck

Page count guidelines for ideal hard cover sizing
Book Design and Imaging

Back when they books were priced differently, there was a rough guideline as to how many pages to fit in a cover before you needed a larger sized cover….

I’m not expressing this well, so let me restate with a specific example:

Say the number of pages I’m submitting is for Premium Lustre paper and I have 160 pages, but if I make it 164 pages, it would need a larger spine and would look funny since the larger spine only partly full…

Is there a hard number that I should be shooting for to “fill” the spine?

I’m guessing – 120, 160, 180, 200???

Thanks

java workaround???
BookSmart

Tony – here is the latest post on the Oracle Web site:

The latest release will allow Java to be run on Mac OS X. Oracle Java version 7u11 and below have been disabled by Apple on OS X. Updating to the latest release will allow secure Java to run on Mac.

I guess, if worse comes to worst, I can load this, reinstall booksmart and upload the book and then uninstall java again, but not a nice scenario long term though.

java workaround???
BookSmart

Hi Tony-

Apparently there have been a number of serious java hacks over the last 3-6 months. During that time Apple actually blocked java on all apple computers for several days at a time. Most of the mac bloggers have suggested removing it entirely, which I did about a month ago. This is the first thing other than a few embedded videos on web pages that I have not been able to work with.

There is a new java version that is “approved” but I was not going to load it just yet as the last 3 versions didn’t go more than a short while until they were exploited.

What about LightRoom? The way I make my books is to make all of the pages in Photoshop as bull bleed book pages and then just scoop them into Booksmart – can’t I do that in LR? Is there anything that LR will NOT do to create a book (cover or flaps?)

Thanks

java workaround???
BookSmart

I’ve been using Booksmart for some time now – I have 23 books still in bookstore and I was trying to start another one today and see that I can’t because I’ve removed java from all of my macs. Most experts hold that this is the sensible thing to do with java.

So NOW what do I do? If I figure out how to make the book with Lightroom, will that get me around the java problem?

What are other mac users doing – I think apple now blocks any java but the latest and sometimes even that<cite>? It looks like booksmart requires java 6 which I’m sure I read was a huge problem?</cite>?

What do do? Or where else to get a similar book printed?

Thanks,

Tom

But I can’t see any way to go back and change it?

Help please…

Import Word for Mac file in Publishing Layout?
BookSmart

I make photo books with “some text” but after playing with the Publisher View in MS Word for Mac 2008 for a while today, I think I would like to design some pages (including my covers) using the Publisher view in Word.

This would include multiple frames filed with images and/or text.

Will this work? If so, how do you import the file to Booksmart?

Thanks

Want to make "2 way book"
Tips and Tricks

Has anyone tried to make what I call a “two way book?” This would be like some magazines do… depending on which way you hold it, the back cover is the front or the front cover is the front.. to about mid way in the book.

I use booksmart but I actually just make all of my own pages full bleed in photoshop and then drop them in, so I am thinking I can just do a 180 on the pages I want to start from the back (of course inverting the sequencing) and drop them in “upside down”

Has anyone tried this? any thoughts about what problems I might run into?

The only one that looks to be insolvable (disappointing) is that I wanted to put both titles on the spine — but with the “other” one facing upside down from the first one and I can see any way to do that. I saw a post from a guy last year who said he did it with photoshop but I cannot (I tried just pasting in upside down text, but Booksmart put it in rightside up).

thanks for any ideas…

cheers,

tom

Great improvement!!! thanks
BookSmart

I haven’t ordered a book in almost 2 months, so this comment may be old news…

THANK YOU for listening and responding to all of my (and others) requests for some way to quickly cancel an order… often I place mine late at night and then FREAK when I quickly see an error… this gives me a chance to fix it. Of course I will probably never make an error again now that this feature is in place… and I thank you again for making me perfect :-)

There are a couple of other little tweaks that are nice, too, but this one was a barn burner for me.

thanks so much

Problem with themes
BookSmart

I’m on a mac 10.4.6

No matter what theme I chose for a photo book, when I use the autoflow and add photos, they all go one to a page, full bleed for the whole book

I’ve tried changing themes, and type of book… always have the same result.

any thoughts appreciated.

thanks

Feature request
Book Printing

I thought this was on the list of things we would see this year but I may be dreaming…

Wouldn’t it be pretty easy for Blurb to have the option to order an Image Wrap book with a dust Jacket? Not asking for anything free, just name the price and we can decide if it’s worth it… I would buy them all the time.

cheers,

tom

Question on end flaps?
Book Design and Imaging

I’ve been making pboto books for several years.

I don’t understand why I can’t use a full bleed layout of my own on the flaps just as I do on the rest of the cover and all pages in the book.

Am I missing some trick to allow this; every time I try to do something other than the very restrictive Blurb flap template, I get a “cannot be edited” message?

Isn’t there some way to deal with this (actually I think I did in the past and can no longer remember how I did it… must be senility setting in)

thanks,

tom

how to put an "order more copies" notice in your book
BookSmart

Putting the URL of your bookstore page works, but it’s a pretty ugly URl to put in print and use that way.

here’s what I’ve done… hopefully someone has a better idea:

Additional books may be ordered at:

www.blurb.com/bookstore

Search for:

(book title or My name)

There MUST be a better way ?

cheers,

why can't an order be cancelled or changed within a certain timeframe???
Ordering and Shipping

I just made an error in an order. I tried uploading a book and got a message that the server was undergoing maintenance until 11pm… the next day I forgot that I was unable to upload it and ordered the wrong version of the book that was already on the blurb web site.

within TWO MINUTES of ordering, I discovered the error only to be told by customer service (what an oxymoronism for this company) that the order could not be changed or cancelled “because the order goes DIRECTLY TO THE PRINTERS”...

OK… that makes sense… but wait a minute … if the order is already PRINTING, why does it take 3-5 days to put it in a box and send it to me?????

My view is that is “we don’t really give a (*&^ about you once you place the order… even Amazon with huge volume has an hour or so leeway to cancel an order.

I’m looking for a new book printer… anyone have a suggestion?

thanks,

tom

Yikes - wrong layout - Help
BookSmart

OMG… I just finished laying out a 165 page book and I find that I’ve used the old full bleed specs for the 8×10 landscape book (it was 10×7.9) and as I start dragging the pages in, I see that they are now 9.6×8.2.

I can see some pages will need to be totally reworked but others look ok if I just use the Format>Photo allignment>allign center (don’t crop) tool.

But my question is this.. I then wind up with a grayed out area that looks like about a quarter inch at the top and bottom of the page. Will this gray area be printed white???

If so, I will be fine… if not I have a LOT of work ahead of me <sigh>

thanks,

How to make changes once book is published
Book Printing

Thanks, Lee.

I wasn’t clear. I’m used to using publishers with templates. I submit full bleed pages from photoshop and think of them as pages not photos. I want to add a few "photos" but when I open booksmart files that have been published, I seem not to be able to click on the GET PHOTOS or …. damn what a stupe!!

as I was checking booksmart to describe the menu commands, I realized that once it is published the default is to view it in preview mode.. just going to EDIT mode solved my problem… thanks so much… I feel like a dope now. LOL

How do I make changes once book is published
BookSmart

Hi -

Sorry if this is a duplicate… I tried posting it last night but cannot find my question today.

I have received a printed book and I don’t like a couple of the pages and want to change them, but when I launch Booksmart, I cannot import new photos. The Import from Computer feature is grayed out. I can use the ADD PAGE or REMOVE PAGE feature but cannot import the photos to put there. I have been using PS for full bleed pages.

Any ideas on how to reenable this. I don’t want to create a new book because of the issues I had getting the dustjacket the way I wanted it.

thanks,

tom
