Quality of images in BookSmart looks awful
Tips and Tricks

Yes, I’m aware the profile info is available, I simply haven’t done it yet.  Just stating first books conversion issues I had for the other first timers that are curiouse.  I look forward to looking into the print profile and making a great book better.

Poll: Gutter Width
Book Design and Imaging

Ok, second book in, here’s the stats:

Large Format

Hardcover

36 pages

Outside margins: 1/2 inch (I like to keep the text as far away from the trim as possible, this margin looks great on the large book, of course would not recomend for the smaller books)

Gutter: 3/8" each side, 3/4 " for both pages together.  Everything was still lined up perfectly (I did my smaller book at a quarter on each side) to the initial look over, I have to push the binding apart a bit to see that it is not perfect. I wold still recomend the 1/4" on each page for the books with a small nub\mber of pages.

Hope this helps, Lisa

Mac user needs genius
Tips and Tricks

I realize this post is a bit late, but there is a way to run both Classic and the Panther opperating system (not he newest Leapord, it won’t work with classic) on the same computer…..  it is just really complicated and requires a Mac certified tech. to tell you how to do it.  We run both systems at once on all 3 of our GD computers.  Sorry I can’t tell you how to do it, but if you really need those classic programs and would still like to upgrade I would suggest contacting you nearest Mac repair.

Quality of images in BookSmart looks awful
Tips and Tricks

I asked the same question when I started my first book and no one answered me.  The really bad quality image you see in booksmart could be considered, in my opinion, equal to a low rez thumbnail.  My book turned out worlds better than what I saw on my screen in BookSmart (they loooked beautiful while in InDesign).  My only complaint is that my colors were a little more dull than what I orig. made them. The blacks were more like a really dark grey.  But they were worlds better than BookSmart showed them.  Over all I think the quality of my book turned out great.  I still need to figure out the color profile thing, I think that will cure the remainder of my quality issues.  In the end though, your quality should be close, if not exact to what it was in InDesign if you followed all the correct steps.  I saved mine at 300-600 dpi jpg’s and they were as clear as a bell.

Poll: Gutter Width
Book Design and Imaging

My small trial book was 24 pages, hard cover.  I used a gutter width of 1/2 inch (.25 on each page) my photos that crossed the gutter came out perfect!  I used a quarter on the outside edges though, and think that it cut it a little close.  I think I’ll use a little larger there next time.  I have a slightly bigger book I should be getting next week that I used a smaller margin on and a full half on the outside edges.  I’ll post those results as well.  Good luck.  Lisa

www.morguefiles.com and www.sxc.hu are great resources for high rez photos off of the internet.  Most all of those pictures are free to the public without any copyright issues.  Some of the photographers ask that you give them recognition.  I practicaly live on that site! I(my favorite is sxc)
