"Checking Books Directory"
BookSmart

Howdy!

So that we’re not limited by Pacific Standard Time (PST) business hours, we’ve also established offices in Amsterdam and London. Therefore, if you don’t live in the US, there’s no longer a need to adjust your hours when contacting Blurb :-)

Cheers,
Jeremy

Crashing
BookSmart

Hey there,

Sorry for any confusion; filling out a crash report isn’t the same as contacting Customer Support. The reason is that software can sometimes fall down, yet re-open just fine. This scenario is more common than a work-stopping crash.

As you note, submitting feedback about a Windows crash also doesn’t result in getting help. Filling out a Windows crash report isn’t the same as contacting Microsoft for assistance; those auto-forms are for a software maker’s long-term research and improvement, not for requesting 1-on-1 assistance.

If you’re experiencing a work-stopping crash, please see the locked sticky post at the top of this forum.

Thank you for hanging in there,
Jeremy

Blogger
BookSmart

Hmmm, that sounds more like an internet connection issue. Please try temporarily disabling your security software/settings and trying to slurp again. If you still can’t create a new Blog to Book (that is, if BookSmart won’t list any blog platforms in the new book wizard), please contact Customer Support.

Cheers!

Help with Adobe Fonts!
BookSmart

Howdy folks,

On PCs, the fonts that don’t appear in BookSmart tend to have PostScript outlining (also referred to as "flavor"). Even if a font is listed as Open Type, it may use PostScript outlining––you can check that by double-clicking the typeface file under Control Panel>Fonts and reading the details. Java libraries on PCs aren’t able to handle such fonts, and therefore they won’t be listed in BookSmart. Unfortunately, there isn’t a workaround for that. Using Garamond as an example here, there are indeed pure True Type versions of that font available. It’s the "Garamond Pro" typefaces (including Adobe Pro versions), that have PostScript "flavor" outlining and therefore can’t be read in BookSmart on PCs.

Please note this is not an issue on Macs, as the Apple versions of the supporting Java libraries have no trouble with PostScript type character outlines.

I hope that helps clarify the situation!

Program working REALLY SLOW!!! Help
BookSmart

Howdy all,

Just to address a comment above: BookSmart absolutely works on Macs, which is what many if not most of us here at Blurb HQ use every day. If BookSmart isn’t performing properly on your computer, and your computer happens to be a Mac, please don’t assume that’s the root of the issue. Even if you’ve done it recently, please run Software Update again (some updates must stack serially) and restart afterward. Also, please ensure you’ve got 10GB of free hard drive space available in order to allow for the use of virtual memory.

If performance doesn’t improve, it could be that the Mac is an older Power PC based machine (G4 or G5), in which case I’d recommend transferring your project to an Intel Mac or a Windows computer. Newer Intel Macs should run BookSmart well, and if that’s not the case for you, there may be an issue in the file. If you’ve got an image heavy book, you’ll want to double-check that no image file exceeds 15MB nor has a short-side dimension of over 4000 pixels. Optimizing image size can definitely speed up performance.

If you’re working on a text-heavy book, the issue could be long text flows (text containers linked from page to page to page to page…) that demand constant recalculations. The solution there would be to re-paste text as shorter passages that flow between fewer, if any, pages

If none of these tips address the issue, and you’re definitely on an Intel-based Mac, then please contact Customer Support, as BookSmart should be running smoothly for you.

Ornament will not go away in last page
BookSmart

If customer support hasn’t responded within a few hours, it means they didn’t get your message. I don’t see an email from the account you’ve registered with Blurb.com. Perhaps you wrote from a different email address?

Please do write in again; you will hear back from support within a matter of hours.

Is this the right size?
BookSmart

Hey Anton,

I hear ya. Let’s see if we can get you some input here.

I can’t fault Lee, as I’m not eager to download that file either (I stick to YouSendIt and don’t know/trust that other site). However, perhaps you’re willing to post a screenshot in this thread? That way, we’ll be able to more easily see if anything indeed looks weird.

Thanks & cheers,
Jeremy

where is the option for Blog comments
BookSmart

Hmmm, now I’ve done it. It’s the Wordpress slurper that should be grabbing comments. Sorry for any confusion, folks. We’ll pass this up the chain as a feature request. Thanks, everyone.

where is the option for Blog comments
BookSmart

Sorry for any confusion; that video is on the list of instructional materials to update. Currently, BookSmart can only support comments on TypePad [correction: Wordpress] blogs. We’ll change that movie as soon as possible––thanks for the heads up!

Difficulty adding text
BookSmart

Hmmmm,

If this same behavior happens in a new book also, you should reinstall BookSmart. If this book is the only project demonstrating this problem, please delete the offending page if possible and rebuild it. If that fails, then this sounds like a good one for Customer Support. If you need to write them, please include in your message a link to this thread so the representative will know what steps you’ve already tried.

Thanks for your patience,
Jeremy

Upload problems!
BookSmart

Hi Lukie,

This post is awesome. Thank you, not only for taking the time to troubleshoot this issue, but also for sharing the solution here. We’re going to act on this tip right away and see how broadly applicable the proxy exclusion fix is :-) Nice job!

Forum folks, feel free to chime in if this fix solved your specific upload problem. If so, what was the upload error message you were getting before solving the problem via this method? Cheers!

Font Disappeared???
BookSmart

Hmmm,

Unfortunately, I must suggest using a different script font. We are looking at the issue here at Blurb HQ and I hope it can be addressed in a future edition of BookSmart. I am sorry for the trouble. The good news is that there are many elegant script typefaces out there. I like Zapfino, although there are endless quality choices:-)

Premium and Standard Paper Options
BookSmart

Hmm, thanks for linking those threads; I stand corrected :-) Looks like that’s indeed the answer for now (author picks paper type, not readers). If that changes, we’ll be sure to post an update on the forums.

Cheers!

Location of footer container not consistent
BookSmart

Hey folks,

Yep, this issue has taken a bit, as the developers are re-examining how they look at headers/footers (sometimes referred to as "folio")... I’m hopeful this problem will soon be ironed out completely. I’ll send a reminder about the current, persistent mis-alignment of some headers/footers so that a quick fix, ahead of any long term changes to folio, can be considered and hopefully implemented.

Thank you for hanging in there,
Jeremy

Getting an answer from Blurb
BookSmart

Hey there,

Your book preview seems okay from this end. This is therefore probably a browser or bandwidth issue. Please update your browser—update Flash while you’re at it too, please. If it still won’t work, please try with another freshly-updated browser. If the preview still won’t load, please give it a couple minutes. It could be a bandwidth issue; please let us know if you’re able to access a lot of other Flash content on the web, yet specifically can’t see your book preview despite following the steps above (nor after restarting your computer for good measure).

How do you change a hard cover book to a soft cover book?
BookSmart

Howdy,

Changing cover type can be done upon purchasing an uploaded book. Changing book size cannot be done at this time, I’m sorry to report, as the aspect ratios of the pages is different. You can at least start a new project based on the same image pool; please simply go to BookSmart’s FILE menu and choose New Book with this Library.

Hope that helps!

Image Wrap on Large Format
BookSmart

Howdy,

You can actually ignore the cover type option in BookSmart; you and/or your readers can purchase the book in any cover type once the project is uploaded. That malfunctioning menu in the program is being repaired, sorry for any confusion. Please be assured that issue does not impact your project, as ordering the book in ImageWrap will simply result in the omission of the flaps.

Howdy,

That Premium Paper option is a checkbox. So long as the checkbox is now appearing,as it seems to be, your readers can uncheck the box to order the book with standard paper :-)

Wordpress... not wordpress.com
BookSmart

Hey folks,

Yes, this is a bit of a bummer indeed. I do a local news blog with a custom URL/Wordpress installation and haven’t been able to rig a way to slurp it yet. Heck, Blurb’s blog is a self-hosted Wordpress setup, and we can’t slurp that either :-(  So, it’s not that we don’t care; as it is, our developers hustle to try to keep up with supported platforms’ API changes. Adding support for this other sphere of Wordpress blogs, while a worthy project indeed, is a project––and so it has to be prioritized by our pretty small team. The folks who make those calls tend to read these forums, so thanks to all who are making their voices heard here.

Blurb Online Preview Error?

Hmmm,

The cover image appears full bleed to me. Could this be a browser issue? I recommend updating your browser, trying a different browser, and finally, if it still looks wrong, contacting Customer Support.
