Those yellow CAUTION circles (and scissors)
Book Design and Imaging

Hi Cathy,

I read the forums quite extensively and the text warning signs seems to be a bug in some cases. If you get the warning sign but it LOOKS okay in PREVIEW MODE it is good to go from what i have read here in the forums.

the scissors icon in edit mode simply represent a reminder that 1/8 of the page will be trimmed and not to put critical info to close to that margin. if you click on the scissors in edit mode the warning will be displayed for you to read.

hope this helps

bug in new version?
BookSmart

when i view the pages at the bottom of the screen (page view?), the tiny thumbnails … not all the images appear in the templates.

IE: i have a page with 8 pictures on it, booksmart template, but at the bottom of the screen i only see three of the 8 photos. When that page is highlighted i see all 8 photos in large view and in preview mode, but at the bottom of the screen for about 20 out of my 160 pages, not all the photos are visible. Some pages show NO PHOTOS in the thumbnail view.

I know my photos are there and will print okay but this is very confusing for editing because some pages i have INTENTIONAL left blank templates where i will add more photos later and when trying to edit my book and/or scroll through quickly i am getting very confused.

any one else having this problem? i will write to technical support also.. just wondering if i am the only one.

thanks all!

Patch for new version of BookSmart
BookSmart

Any feedback on the new patch? After reading the posts when the new version came out i decided not to download the new version… what are the forums opinions on the new version now that the patch has been released?  Is it worth updating?

thank you! love blurb!

Test drive the newest version of BookSmart
BookSmart

When i saw this locked post i almost didn’t believe my eyes… a new version woo-hoo!!!

so excited about cool new features:  possibly rulers/guidelines to place images correctly so they wont get cut off, the much discussed insert your own photo as a background, new templates, flexible templates, fixing of the align tools, user controlled zoom, favorite templates and text styles… what happened to these??

but alas… none of these things I have read about on the forums seems to come with the new release… in fact MORE PROBLEMS seem to have come with it! I agree with Lee that most of the books are PHOTO books yet all the "improvements" are text related.. not very exciting.

I haven’t downloaded the new one yet, and I don’t think I will until I’ve read some good things.

hopefully this will all be worked out soon!

scanning newspaper article into book
BookSmart

i stand corrected… one of the articles i can see some of what is on the back.. mostly through the "white space", areas not filled with text. The article is from 1983. But the text from MY ARTICLE outshines what does show through, and it is bold and completely readable.

An article from 2001, also shows some of what is behind it, but i obviously didnt notice it untill you pointed it out hehe.

scanning newspaper article into book
BookSmart

Lee.. i have no idea! i honestly didn’t even think about that issue. The newspapers are old so they have yellowed slightly and thickened up somehow.. so maybe that has something to do with it .. I’ll try a new newspaper and see if there is a difference.

at 100% the article looks fine, the print is clear and the picture along side of it is clear and I can read the article on my screen without any problems. At less than 50% of zooming the picture is very PIXELATED and FUZZY and I really have to struggle to read the article…

im not looking for perfection, just want the article to be readable in the book by its viewers.

scanning newspaper article into book
BookSmart

silly question.. just really want to confirm… i scanned some newspaper articles into my book and i just want to make sure that if i can read the font in preview mode at a comfortable size then in my actual printed book.. the font should be large enough to view at a reading distance correct?

has anyone done anything similar with scanning newspaper articles?

I think you lengthy and valuable lesson should be locked at the top of the forum. I was very confused about DPI/PIXELs when i first started… and I missed the fact about saving in TIFF.. i think everyone should read your posts when they first begin!

How do I move my title text?
Book Design and Imaging

You cannot move the text box locations but you have several options to try to best meet your needs.

- select one of the many different templates booksmart offers, make sure you search through them all

- center, left or right justify your text to move it to your desired location

- simply use the space bar to move your text around

- or you can create your own cover in an outside software such as photoshop or whatever you please and put your text anywhere!!! then you can import it into book smart

im sure others will have other suggestions .. search the forums and FAQ on how to import your own design as a full bleed

Low Resolution Warning - 100% Trustworthy?
BookSmart

if you dont fill a container, the background will appear. In EDIT mode, you will see the gray container… but in PREVIEW mode you will always see what will print which will show you the background instead of gray container space.

removing photo
Book Design and Imaging

i have been dragging and dropping my image into booksmart… then ill view it at full zoom and see if it needs to be edited/ touched up. Ill edit the photo in an outsider program … delete the original photo from the library on the left and then RE drag and drop the new image into the same container..

my question is.. are the ORIGINAL files still located in my library somewhere taking up extra memory?  i know booksmart creates three files, and ive found all the files but they are not named easily for me too see what is stored in the folder or if i have hundreds of extra photos in my folder that im not using in my book.

if booksmart DOESN’T automatically delete them.. then how do i do that if the file names are all numbres/letters and i cant view a thumbnail?

thanks!!

Anyone want a seperate dust jacket?
Book Printing

i think thats a great idea..

it is something i would absolutely purchase with every book order… so they would just ship the extra dust jacket with my current book at the time and i would keep it as a back up.

are all the books in bookshop made by using blurb?
Tips and Tricks

many people use an outside photo editing software such as photoshop and then select the full bleed option and import what they have created. Using this outside software lets you create your own pages and do whatever you’d like.. i would suggest going to the tutorials page on how to import your own design.

There are also different templates according to which size you choose to create, so not all templates are available in all book sizes. create a new book in all size and look through all the templates to see which ones will fit your needs. Any play around with the templates… if you leave something blank it becomes the background so you can create variations of each template by lets say leaving one of the containers blank.

also – you cannot change your photos in booksmart or add special effects. an outside photo editing software would be needed to do things like blur or fade.

I have personally learned about GIMP from these forums, which is a free photo editing software with many capabilites.

hope this helps.. enjoyy

Borders Changing on ENTIRE book??
BookSmart

i have this issue as well.. and i wrote to blurb and this is what they said:

We have noticed that there are a few layouts and borders that don’t work well together. But as a precaution we suggest minimizing the use of multiple borders if an issue arises. A new release of the software with the border fixes in place is still many weeks away with no definite date yet so you may want to try uploading your file under the current version. As long as everything looks okay right before you upload, it should upload fine. Rest assured that you aren’t responsible for a border randomly changing during upload and we would work with you to help resolve the problem.

Im using the current version so i guess im just supposed to not use borders in their opinion.. but i think im just going to wait till im finished with the book and then apply the borders..a little frustrating yes but worth it to me to just do it all ONCE at the end …

How to globally apply page layout, and automatically add filenames to te...
BookSmart

there may be an easier  way… but i would select the template you want and apply it to the first page… then go to insert and click insert duplicate layout and do that 10 times. then go to the bottom of the screen where you have the thumbnail views of the PAGES themselves.. click the first page while holding the ctrl key … keep clicking the pages while holding ctrl untill youve selelcted all 10 pages…. then hit copy ( ctrl C) and paste those as many times as u need ( ctrl v)—then you can autoflow your pictures in

#2 – i believe you are out of luck – booksmart does not automatically add files names into text boxes.

Can everything that you see in "Book Ideas" really be created with Books...
Tips and Tricks

Every book size has different template options… some are the same throughout but there are different ones within each book size. i personally think all templates should be available in all size.. and like some of the templates in the smaller books but they are not available across the board.

you should probably look through each book size and the different template options and then choose which book size would best fit your needs.
