i can not get the PDF preview file option to turn on
BookSmart
You might want to try the method I use – printing directly to a 3rd party PDF creator. I use pdfFactory and it installs a driver that enables me to choose it when I print the book. Works great and it enables me to share a preview copy of the book with my clients before I upload it to Blurb for publishing. Hope this helps!

Slurping a self-hosted Wordpress Blog
BookSmart
You should be able to use the wizard to specify your log in name and password and then it should download everything (or what you choose) into booksmart. I’m working on a typepad slurb now.. a rather large one in fact.. so, if you need any help please feel free to contact me via my profile.. I’m happy to assist.

Autoflow and Auto-layouts
BookSmart
Hi Jeremy, Any chance on getting something similar for the blog-to-book solution. My ideal would be to continue to allow the auto-flow based on date or category (I use date mostly) but instead of always just putting a single blog entry per page, it would choose the best layout depending on the size of the entry.. ie: if you have a single entry that is only 3 lines long, it would add the next entry right under it with say 3 lines of space between the posts. Currently, I need to manually edit the book to merge entries together thus I am really unable to auto-flow the book.. I need to drag/drop a few entries at a time and then merge them manually. Thx for the hard work!

Blurb 1.9 STILL can't import pictures from Blogger!
BookSmart
I’m happy to report my issue has been resolved as well. Thx to the great team of QA and support folks at Blurb (thx Gareth, et al), the problem was tracked down to the password protection for the blog. I removed the password protection and voila! It works great… thx again for the great support!

Blurb 1.9 STILL can't import pictures from Blogger!
BookSmart
Yes.. I’m having similar problems trying to "slurp" a blog from typepad. This particular blog has over 900 images and 300 posts in various categories. When I tried the auto-populate option, it crashed and burned the program after about 3 hours. So, I tried to just pull everything into the library and work from there. As reported above, all the text pulled in fine.. .but only about 25 of the 900 images actually show up in the library.. and most of them are garbage characters. My guess is that the software is not finding the files in the correct spot it is looking for.. unfortunately, without the images in the proper place with the blog pages, the tool is as mentioned above useless. To really pull from a blog, the software should pull in the images and text as displayed on the html pages in the blog.. and from there, you should be able to just drag and drop them right onto the page.. I would propose that the software convert the blog pages as displayed to .jpgs which can just be added to the blog as full page image files.. having to reformat the text and photos (if they downloaded) to have the page match the blog for a large site is not really all that useful. Here’s hoping you can get this process to work and be truly an automated process!

1.9.0-1.9.1 Just Plain Dies when adding a photo from computer
BookSmart
Just wanted to chime in here.. I have version 1.91xxxx and just opened a book I was previously working on. Went to import 35 photos expecting the worst.. worked just fine. Actually, the import and directory structure was faster than I’ve ever experienced. I also add a bunch of photos to the book without incident. Just wanted to add the comment that it is working for me.. if I can offer any assistance in resolving, please just let me know.

Blurb now requires your customers to register an account before they can...
Web Features
I purchase from many sites that do not require you to register an account.. but make it an option if you want your info stored so you don’t need to do it again for future purchases… I think this helps customers "feel" like their info isn’t being stored and they don’t like that idea for credit card info. So, perhaps having an option that allows customers to opt out of creating an account would help… for security issues, so long as you have their credit card and run a validation before finalizing things, you’ll be safe from false charging. If the customer doensn’t want to leave an email address to receive a receipt or shipping info.. that could be their choice.

ICC profile for PERFECT RESULTS
Tips and Tricks
Is the HP Indigo 5000 printer used for ALL books types across the board? Is this printer only used for hardcover or softcover as well… just want to be sure the correct ICC profile is used to ensure the color does proof correctly for the book type used. Thx!

Thx Scooter for the update and info.. I agree – the best way to make a profit with Blurb seems to come directly from specialized sales. For me, I have a few clients that LOVE the way the books are put together and combine their "data" (poetry, recipes, children’s stories), with my photography and illustrations. They are willing to pay a premium to receive a completed book that they could not create by themselves with full access to my large database of images. I have used these books a marketing tools for my photography business with varying degrees of success. If it is a large event or group photoshoot, I have sold many copies.. if it is just a family portrait, there really isn’t a way for me to sell it. But, by leverging past books of various types to clients, I am slowly building an additional piece of my business. Stay tuned for more exciting options and ideas….

Final print quality of font when saving in JPEG
BookSmart
Wish I could help.. but it should look fine. The real issue is with the dpi and 300 is fine. Is the font used set to smooth with anti-aliasing on? If so, you should be fine.

I agree with Pat.. it depends on your audience. I have been creating books for a single client who does poetry but has little computer experience and is happy to pay me a premium to do the books for her. I include my photography and all the time spent creating the books… I have sold over 60 books to her and have made a decent profit. But.. this is a unique situation.. I cannot imagine anyone playing $60 for a book of my photography for example if I created a 80 page 8×10 boo for example.. I’m just not well known enough for anyone outside of friends and family to purchase. This is the crux of the situation – blurb makes great books for either direct clients (like my situation or Pat’s dance class), but for general selling, I think the price point is too high. I continue to look forward to the future when perhaps the price point will be lowered and/or further discounts make things less prohibitive.

Coupons/Discount Codes?
General Interest
Thx Allison – I have been a subscriber to the newsletter since day 1 of its announcement but I still haven’t seen any discounts beyond a free $8 shipping code last December. While I know you guys need to make you money… it would be nice to try and compete with the other companies like Mpix and Shutterfly who do offer significant coupons – I love the Blurb books.. but would like to be able to make more than 5% on client books – it really isn’t worth the effort put in given the software. If you were to offer monthly specials, $$ volume discounts (once you spend $1000 lifetime you get a 25% coupon on your next order) or buy 5 books, get 1 free type deals.. .your dedicated authors would be much appreciated! Something to think about… unless I’m alone in this.. Thx again for the response though..

Coupons/Discount Codes?
General Interest
Hi all.. just wanted to ask if there was any plans in the works to offer dedicated folks here some decent discount codes? I know you offer the occasional $8 of shipping which is fine.. and there is teh multi-book 10% off or so.. but I’ve spent a few thousand dollars in the past few months and was hoping for perhaps an occasional free book or 25% off your next order? I do get these discounts with Mpix, Shutterfly and Kodak.. and while their books aren’t the same.. they are quite good and my clients like them just as much. And.. with the discounts, I can charge the customer a reasonable price and still make a tiny profit.. with blurb, I cannot resell for a profit because the book prices would be too high – a discount would help a great deal. Anyway.. just thought I’d ask and guage the feeling of the group on this.. am I the only one that longs for a nice discount perk for us dedicated printers? Thx….
