General Interest

I would love to see a webinar devoted to b&w workflow to produce a true b&w (or toned ) Blurb book.

Anyone else?

I also experienced the white in the gutter on 2 pages spreads with premium paper on 10×8.(this did not happen on standard paper) Premium came from Ma. and standard from Seattle. On the 13×11 no white gap.Go figure

monitor calibrating question
Book Printing

Calibrate your monitor because in b&w this will affect the brightness or darkness of the print.I have a little Spyder calibration kit.You can get these and others for a couple of hundred dollars.I calibrate every two weeks or so.The Macbooks also can be calibrated in colorsync(it gives you prompts through the process) It is not as accurate but better than no calibration. If you are calibrated and Blurb is to get the same look download the B3 profile and softproof in Photoshop(there are Forum threads on this)

You will prepare your image in grayscale then convert to rgb.Make sure you send all images in the book to Blurb in srgb space. Good luck

need help with title on the books cover
Tips and Tricks

If you make your cover in INDESIGN you can drop it in.Unfortunately I have run across this myself.

I either used a smaller font using the blurb template or did layout in IN Design or Photoshop .Blurb does not have much variety in templates for a full bleed cover.

Athough the jpg is not recommended I do have a cover on a 10×8 book I did in PS save as png that looks fine.

I usually run a test book or at the least take to Fedx and run a copy on their HP5500 .Good luck

Poor Quality Black and White
Book Design and Imaging

I have just done an 80 page book 13×11 in B3.Title is Thirty 8 currently in the store. It’s a screen look but I think you will get the picture.

My background is many years of b&w so I am pretty picky.I ran a test book awhile back using pure gray scale (in RGB for upload) and many duotones and tritones set up in Photoshop saved as RGB.So keep in mind some of the images are toned and some b&w only.
You may have done some of these things already

My monitor is calibrated every week and I soft proof each image using the HP5000 icc profile.
I got no color cast on any of the pure b&w and only the tones I setup for the duotones and tritones.

The key to this whole process for me is accurate monitor calibration and soft proofing without checking the simulate paper option.

The test book was very good as received, some WERE tinted ,but because I did different things for the test only so I cannot wait to see the B3 version on premium paper
My B3 book is due here tomorrow.I only ran it after doing a small page test book to see what all fonts and images looked like printed.
In my opinion spending as much time on putting the book together the test was worthwhile for the info it provided.
Good luck Steve

JPEGS with text
Book Printing

Vinny /Tony,

I ran this problem by Tony a few weeks ago.Index with very small jpg type looked blurry in preview and the larger type on the cover had artifacting around the letters.

I made a cover in IN Design and saved as a png.I also made a straight jpg cover from Photoshop .On the Index pages I made a jpg and png version.Still in all blurry in Preview. I took them all to Kinko/Fedx and printed as laser copies and also on an HP5550 large format printer .Every file was fine and I could have used any of them. The type sizes ranged from 3pt.-150pt.

I assume it has to do with the way the software interpolates type not made within the software.

I am waiting for the binding issues on the larger format to be resolved and I will send in a proof book to see if this works.Steve

making a cover in photoshop for Booksmart
BookSmart

Thanks Mike and Tony,

I made a cover with type in PS as a jpg saved as a PNG.Made the same cover in In Design saved as a PNG.

I still get the artifacts in Blurb.I did go to Fex and had them do laser copies and a copy on an HP 5550 and there was not problem with the type on either method or file.

I assume is is just the software not reading the large file well enough .I will see what happens when Blurb prints and I will put this glitch in the same box as the text warnings coming up all the time. Thanks,Steve

making a cover in photoshop for Booksmart
BookSmart

Recently I attempted to do my cover in photoshop.

Image 13×11black and white 300dpi.jpg

Type created in photoshop on a blank page set to transparent background 300 dpi jpg.

Largest type is 130point smallest 48point

Arranged the type on the picture, flattened and saved as a jpg.

Before uploading to the book page I converted to png.

All looks good in PS at 200% on screen.

When the cover comes up in preview I have some sort of artifacts behind the letters almost looking as if it is part of the checker grid used on the transparent background in PS.

If anyone has done this before could you take me through the proper steps as this is not working.

Thanks,Steve

Images / Text Resolution problem
BookSmart

Hi Tony,

Let me get this right.I am doing an index page in Photoshop 13×11 with maybe 20 or so 1×1.57 images with small font size (6 point) for the captions. I am saving at 300dpi and importing into the book.I get ragged type ,but the pics are ok.I tried to convert to a png. and got the same thing in preview.

From the last post I gather this will not show up in the final using my technique .Should I be using crisp type setting in PS? Thanks,Steve

justify type
BookSmart

I did the text of my book in Mac OS 10.4 that did not allow justify type.
I have recently upgraded my OS to 10.5 which does allow.
Loading my book on my new computer from my saved book on CD that was created in 1.9.8 will not justify the text after the fact.
Do I have to redo all text?
What am I doing wrong?

Black and white photos have a color cast to them.
BookSmart

I have had pretty good results with my b&w test book.(120 b&w pics)I first did grayscales then converted to rgb.
I softproofed with an HP Indigo profile (there is a link on the forum to download this profile) leaving the paper and ink simulation unchecked.I have also done the same with the Blurb B3 profile.
My straight grayscale conversions looked real close to neutral in print.(I printed silver prints for 35 yrs.so I AM picky)
I also made some quadtones from the Photoshop presets that gave me some really great warm and cool tone grays (depending on the subject).Once I get my new tests back I will share all the info.
What I did discover is that you cannot leave the paper and ink simulation checked in softproofing and then try to adjust the image.(I think Blurb does not support softproofing for tech answers but one should be doing it)
I have decided after 2 books Blurb is all about file set up and prep, plus experimenting.
It is certainly not perfect, but I always can count on tech support to either give me a solution or tell me what I ask is beyond the capabilities at this point. I have been pleased with their support ..Thanks,Steve

Cover Layout in Photoshop
BookSmart

I have designed my cover (13×11) in Photoshop using the correct full bleed dimensions noted in one of the forum posts.
I am loading as a 300dpi jpg.
The largest point size is about 175 .Maybe 1 inch in size.
What should I expect in reproduction in comparison to creating the book with the Blurb template.
I do know some have suggested uploading as a png. What will this do to image and type quality.I am using gray scale scans converted to sRGB and type made in Photoshop. Thanks,Steve

Justified text option not showing up in new software
BookSmart

youngb2,
You are correct. mine does the same thing.I am on 10.4 also.If no one picks up on this I will contact tech support.I am still in 1.9.7 and it is slower than 1.9.5 and I have problems correcting text(ie.the cursor falls in the wrong place and deletes the incorrect letters.)

Hard drive change
BookSmart

Thanks Tony,
I am having some freezing up problems in text with 1.9.7.The speed for the software from 1.9.5 to .7 has slowed considerably.Have you or anyone else experienced this.It is taking forever to do simple text as the cursor makes the corrections from another place or deletes letters when the space bar is used.I contacted tech support and it sounded as though they were unaware of this text problem. They suggested I do unformatted text in word and paste, but this is a pain.

Hard drive change
BookSmart

I am in dire need of a new hard drive upgrade for my G4 Mac.
What is the safest way to save my books in progress AND get them back on the new drive?
Can I export to my external hard drive AND burn to a CD?I really don’t want to lose all this work.
What are the steps to import the saved versions?
I have downloaded 1.9.7 and made the text adjustments to the books made on 1.9.5.
Will downloading 1.9.8 (for the new drive) have any effect on the text? Steve

Cannot find justified for text
BookSmart

Downloaded 1.9.7 a couple of days ago.I noticed things changed a bit in a book in progress, most noticed were sentences out of place and so on.After putting everything back in place and making the font size smaller I decided to justify the type. After watching Chad’s tutorial on the new things in 1.9.7 justify was not where it is shown on the tutorial. Is it not possible to in change works in progress from 1.9.5? Where is justfy? Thanks,Steve
