Very satisfied with BookSmart
BookSmart

For those of you just starting out let me say that I have been extremely satisfied with Blurb and with the BookSmart software. I have done over a dozen books of different sizes, black and white and color, dust jacket and Image Wrap and paperback. They have all been extremely well done! I have always used standard paper and found it very good. I have yet to find fault with the Blurb process!

Page Visits - Metrics
Ordering and Shipping

I see that many others have asked this question so I will share what response was received from The HELP desk at Blurb.

Weekly Visits metric – just what does it measure?

Response from a BLURB Customer Support Representative

The Weekly Page Visits is any time someone views any of your books.

These are counted any time someone views one of your books, or views that specific web page.

If someone views your book 4 times within one hour it will count as 4 views.

All visits in the Metrics do include any time you visit these pages.

Just as Stephen King can’t walk into a bookstore and obtain a list of everyone who bought his latest bestseller, Blurb authors cannot track who has purchased their masterpieces. There are privacy laws which prevent us from releasing that information. There’s also no way to see who viewed your book, or which books specifically have been viewed.

Some authors, however, choose to include contact information (email addresses, web sites, blog URLs, etc) in their books, or in their profile on blurb.com. That way, readers can contact the author, visit their web site, sign up for author email updates, etc.

I hope that helps.

Weekly Visits metric - just what does it measure?
General Interest

Does it count author’s visits?

Does it count a person that visits yesterday and again today as two visits or as one visit?

Does it count the pages that are read or just the visit?

Can I find out who is looking at my book?

Can I find out what part of the country is looking?

Can I find out who is buying my books?

Can I find out where my buyers are coming from?

Is there a way to open two versions of same book concurrently?
BookSmart

Thanks, Tony.

It will, then, be simpler to move the photos from the current to the revised and just leave the textual material in the revised as is.

BookSmart

Have a current version of a book and a revised version.

I would like to OPEN both versions concurrently so that I can CUT/PASTE from one to the other.

Is there a way of doing this?

I assume the answer is NO and that I have to Cut/Paste to a TEXT document on the desktop and then Cut/Paste from the desktop TEXT back into the second version.

insert text in new page but inserts in previous
BookSmart

Let me clarify: I am doing a Trade sized book, text only and I am justifying the body of the text.

insert text in new page but inserts in previous
BookSmart

I wish to insert a block of text in one page but BookSmart insists on inserting it into previous page.

How can I make sure that text for a new page will stay there and NOT be automatically inserted into the end of the previous page.

ImageWrap on trade-size book.
General Interest

My first try at having an ImageWrap done on one of my books. It turned out very, very good! Up to now I have either done dust cover or softcover. This was a small book – only 100+ pages and it made it appear so much better than the soft cover. For special limited runs that impress folks I would recommend ImageWrap.

Trade b/w softcover great job!
General Interest

I recently experimented with doing a simple WORD to BlurbSmart cut and paste and then print. 100 pages.  A photo for cover and another for back cover. It greatly exceeded my expectations. Perfect! Thanks, Blurb!

Will separate Video or graphics card help BookSmart?
Book Design and Imaging

I regularly work with landscape sized books of 350 plus pages and about that many photos, both color and b/w.

Will a separate graphics (or Video) card make BlurbSmart work any faster or more efficiently?

I am thinking on buying a new PC since the present one tends to not be able to handle book files of 125 MB plus.

I wondered if the graphics cards help any. I am NOT a gamer so do not need it for that.

If they do help – Are there recommended graphics cards for BlurbSmart users heavy into photos?

Thanks!

IMPORTING and EXPORTED book text is OK but no photos
BookSmart

Issue has been resolved without help from Blurb.com.

Moved file to a newer, faster PC with more RAM (4 instead of 2 GB) and switched to 2.9.3 version (from 2.9.2) of BookSmart and removed half a dozen larger photos.

2.9.3 did not support font I had used so IMPORTED file had incorrect fonts at Chapter headings – but that was relatively easy to fix.

2.9.3 did not render the page colors quite the same, but I lived with the new color.

Problem was NOT with Blurb but with my lack of processing power for such a large, image intensive book.

Why not allow forum message edits or deletes?
General Interest

Would it be possible to allow a forum message to be edited once posted or even deleted by the person who created it?

I know that you get a shot at it before posting – but sometimes the problem changes or gets resolved and you need to either delete the message or change it.

Just a thought.

Hi, I hope someone out there can give me some advice. I have finished half a dozen books already but this is the first time this problem has come up. Running Blurbsmart 2.9.2 on a PC with 2GB RAM and working with a Blurbsmart book file of  126 MB.

Just completed a landscape size book with much text and several hundred photos (300 plus pages) . Uploaded it to Blurb for printing. After reviewing it in hard copy made some changes and uploaded it a second time – also created an export file using Export. I assumed that if need be I could re- IMPORT my book back into BlurbSmart later.

I then removed the file in BookSmartData and stored it eslewhere – to allow me to begin an entirely new book.

After several days, needing to make minor changes in the old book I had uploaded and sent to Blurb.com I IMPORTED the export file that had been created earlier. The book loaded fine, all the text was there, but the hundreds of photos did not appear!  One or two did appear in the left column but that was it.

I went back and IMPORTED another copy of the book I had exported and the same thing happened there.

A third and a fourth – all the same. Text but no photos.

I peeked in the library file in the BooksmartData file created when I imported the file and all those little photo files were there – original, screen, thumb, etc.

I tried another tack. I IMPORTED a much smaller book file.(Another book I had written earlier.) It loaded and reconstituted itself just fine! So, Blurbsmart IS working.  The issue MUST have to do with the number of photos in my book.

Is my only option now to accept the text that is there and re-input all of the photos from my Picasa files – they run in the hundreds?

Or is there some work-around I am missing?

Thank you!

On-line Preview is Great!
Web Features

Thank you for making the on-line preview expandable to the entire book!  It enables a person to get a much better "feel" for how the entire book looks. You folks are always trying to make your product better and better. I, for one, appreciate it very much.

Extremely satisfied!
Ordering and Shipping

Just received my 350 page 8×10 hardcopy with dust jacket book with narrative text and over 300 photographs mingled in with the text. Blurb did a tremendous job. The quality of the pages, photos, dust jacket and service was excellent! Even full page photos that earned a warning icon printed out extremely well. Next time, however, I will allow a bit more space at the spine for two-page photo spreads. (I allowed no margin at the spine.) I used both black and white and color photos and all printed fine. This was a family history book. Thank you  Blurb.

Book written in PDF. Need help getting it in Book Smart format.
Book Design and Imaging

The book is written, photos inserted where we want them and it is in PDF. After reading through this Forum we realize we do not have the expertise to print using BookSmart. Out of the list of Blurb Nation people who can you recommend to help us move this project forward. Book is 370 pages with 300 photos and much text. Most photos are black and white but a few are in color. It is a family history book.

Help with First Book
General Interest

We have a family history book all written with much text and at least one photo or two per page (black and white mainly). It was written in WORD and is now in PDF format. We would like to have a high quality result that will stand the test of time.  It its 240 8×10 pages long and contains 300 photos. The publishing process is too daunting for us and we would appreciate the recommendation of a known person who could take what we have and get it published through Blurb.com. Thank you.
