Lining up photos with consistent internal margins
Tips and Tricks

If you’re using the latest version try clicking on a page layout that have both photo and text blocks.  Then click on Editi Layout up on the menu bar.  From there you should be able to move the text and photo blocks exactly where you want them.  I use this method and I’m now working on my 18th book using this process.

Uploading backgrounds
Tips and Tricks

First question – are your backgrounds in a digital format?  I’ve created many backgrounds for my books using PSE 7,9 and now 12.  Once they’re saved as a JPEG for example, I open the program holding my background (usually in my Windows photo library) and just drag the background over into the picture box in Blurb.  You can also use "Get Photos" in Blurb and bring it in that way but dragging them is much quicker when both program are open and one is overlapping the other. Just started using "Edit Layout" for my current book and man it saves a lot of time reworking my layouts.

I want to use my own background and ornaments
Book Design and Imaging

So far the only way I know to be able to do that is by using a different photo editing program.  I use Photoshop Elements for the books I’ve created on Blurb.  Probably the best example is one of my dog books.  Check them out.

Applying same text layout to 300+ page (all at once?) Please help!
Tips and Tricks

Ellensays,

I’m not at home and can’t open the Blurb software here at work but as a user I don’t think you can do it all at once like you desire.  But the other option is to create the first page layout like you want and then go up to the "duplicate the page" (there is a combination key stroke for this) and hold it down until all your pages are there for you.  It should start filling in the same layout as you hold down the key combination.

Book Store Suggestion
Web Features

Believe it or not as a member of Blurb I enjoy looking at the books of other members in the Book Store.  I have even commented on many of the books I have previewed and received comments back from some of the authors at my Yahoo mailbox.  What I have found most frustrating is clicking on a book and finding there is no "Preview Book" banner on the book.

My suggestion is to place some sort of marking (ex: *) next to the books that have or do not have a Preview Book banner on it.  Blurb can determine which way to go with this since they know which ones have banners and which ones that don’t and which is the greater number.

Then put a note somewhere on the Book Store page to explain what the marking denotes. I think this would let people know in advance if they can look inside a book or not.   Again, it’s only a suggestion! Thank you.      CJAYJR

More control over templates
Book Design and Imaging

As I read through these comments regarding more control of templates I saw myself a few years ago when I became a member of Blurb. My first book was created using the templates provided with this "free" software and it was easy to use and provided for a nice book for my mother-in-law.  It was easy and fund – drag and drop. After my third book I wanted something a little different and desired more flexibility in the page layouts. That is when I found Photoshop Elements 3.0.  I ordered the book and began reading and trying things with the photos I had collected over the years. Now a few years later I’m using PS Elements 7.0 and have read all the books versions I could from my public library and just completed book number nine.  Ninety percent of all the pages are layouts I’ve created beginning with blank pages in PSE.  I’ve even created a couple of pages using PowerPoint – saved the page as a JPEG – pulled it up in PSE – changed the page size plus the resolution to 300 dpi (or is psi – I forget).  Anyway, what I trying to say is that if you really want control – go and get it. It’s out there for the taking but you have to go and apply yourself.  It seems to me that many times when a person is given everything a lot of creativity is lost because you become content or complain about being given more.. People have commented that my books are really unique because of my page layouts and they don’t look like other photo books.  I’m no expert but like many of you who wanted more but was afraid to go out and take the time to get it – I decided to do something about it and not wait on Blurb.  Today I’m rewarded with creating more satisfying books and having new editing skills under my belt that promotes more creativity.  Sometime I can’t go to sleep or wake up early thinking about new page layouts because of the skills I’ve obtained from reading books and other pieces about photo editing. I can’t wait to see if I can create what I’ve visualized.Lastly, I thank Blurb for providing this outlet and from what I’ve seen from the number of books published a lot of others have jumped in and let their creativity energy flow as well.  Again, don’t wait on Blurb – they have given you the BLANK canvas – go fill it the way you want by learning new skills – once you’ve got them they’re ours to use and keep. CJAYJR

Books for Clients
General Interest

I’ve had a couple people approach me to create a photo book for them because they have seen some of my books and like the unusual page layouts I created.  Because my books have been for me or family members the copyright statement used have been okay.

My question now is how do I write up the copyright page since the photos will not be mine?

Do I share the copyright with the client since the photos belong to them and the layout designs are mine or do they loose that right because I am the one creating the book – please advise.

Also please provide an example of what could be used for a book for a client.

Front & Back Cover Pages
Book Design and Imaging

Platteford & Firstgear,

Thank you both for your responses.  For some reason I forgot to check the review mode and that the text would disappear if none was used.  I used this before with a couple of my other book titles but it has been a while since my last book – I panicked.  Thanks for the reminder.

BTW, both of your book covers (Amazing Wolf Art & Red Hot) are just fantastic.

Front & Back Cover Pages
Book Design and Imaging

I would like to use my own layout page for the front & back covers of my book but can’t find a layout that allows this.  Is it possible that Blurb can add cover layouts that are blank so covers a person create can be added?  I know these cover pages are a little larger than regular pages but it would be nice to have this choice.

Get Pictures
BookSmart

Tony,

Thank for your reply and I’m sure I will use the workaround because it seem like a much easier way of doing things and I’m all for that.  I checked all the topics but did not see a post for this particular problem.  I’m still curious as to why this has happened but I truly appreciate your suggestion.  Blurb Rocks!

Get Pictures
BookSmart

First of all I don’t know if this a Blurb problem or a problem with my PC in general but here goes. After downloading the latest version of Blurb, I began working on my book (the 9th one).  When I clicked on "Get Pictures" I see my photos in the thumbnail mode but the actual photos are not visible and they have a QuickTime logo with JPEG underneath.

My question is how do I fix this so I can see the photos?

Premium verse Standard Paper in Blurb Books
General Interest

During the last couple of weeks I’ve read articles about perserving analogy photos.  A friend of mine asked would I scan some of her old photo and put them in a Blurb book.  She then asked about the Premium Paper verse Standard and which would last longer.

I did not know how to respond but felt that the more expensive paper would tend to logically last longer.  Can someone give more details on this?

I know the premium paper is for books less than 160 papges but what is the life span of photoS printed on BOTH types of paper.

 Thank you.

Bookstore Staff Picks - Do They Actually Look Inside?
General Interest

You know I wondered the same thing about the staff picks becuase I created a little 40 pages book about our dogs with a cute story told from the viewpoint of one of the dogs and with what I thought were fantastic and very unusual photos and layouts – never got a mention.

Many times in the Blurb ads it says "just have fun" but it seem like a very critical eye is looking at these staff picks and they’re looking for books from professional photographers instead of everyday people with an idea and imagination.

It would be nice if books that are being previewed could have a place where the previewer could leave comments (like in Flickr) about the book, the photos or the layouts.

Anway, I thought I would just add my two cent and ask those of you to check out my book:

http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/246216

to see if it meets that:  exceptional photography (as a novice), great story (as told by the dog), fantastic layouts which reflect a great use of Blurb.

Let me know what you think.

Book Preview Mode
General Interest

Staff,

I had a few friends to write and ask me about the "Book Preview" mode because they did not know what to do once they got to the screen to see the other pages of my book.

I must admit I should have told them to hit the Page Down or scroll to see the next page. But that was my mistake – thinking everybody knew what to do.

I’m wondering if you could add this to the first page where you tell people there are 15 pages to be viewed.  Maybe letting new people to the site know how this is done will help them see these pages. Sometimes things like this are obvious and other times they are not.  Just a suggestion.

Where's My Book?
General Interest

Staff,

I hate to nit pick but I checked the Bookstore "EVERY DAY" after uploading my book and I never saw it in the bookstore – seven days later or otherwise.  I see some books listed twice!

If it doesn’t show up in the bookstore and people don’t check my profile (because they don’t know me or want to) what is the purpose of having a bookstore?

I just checked again and out of "635" books mine is now where to be found. I people browse the Bookstore it would seem that is the logical place to find books – not someone’s profile.

I do not feel your response truly explained why my book has not shown up in the bookstore since I uploaded it or received it in the mail.  There must be another reason.

Book Preview Mode
BookSmart

To All:

Thank for the advice. For about 3 hrs last night I tried working with Adobe Reader to correct my problem and discovered my AR 6 is probably what’s causing it.  I tried upgrading to AR 8 but it will not install because of the AR 6 problem.  I can’t figure out why AR 6 will not let me upgrade to AR 8 and my mind crashes on me after working all day on a PC at work and then trying to figure out these things at home. I’ll just suffer because life is to short to kill more brain cells trying to figure it out. Again thanks for the help.

Book Preview Mode
BookSmart

I’m using IE 7 or Firefox as my browser on an XP OS system and every time I try to preview a book – I get an empty screen or my system lock up and crash.

I use IE 7 at work on an XP OS system and the preview mode work just fine.

Can anyone explain why I am not able to preview books on my home PC in either of these two browsers?

Where's My Book?
General Interest

I uploaded my lastest book "Fawn & NoeMoe" on 17 May and received it in the mail today (27 May).  I looked the 657 "Just Published" books and do not see my book nowhere!

The Book Preview mode was set to "ON" and viewing for "PUBLIC" is also set and I still do not see my book.

I looked at the "METRICS" and see where others have looked at my book but I still can not see my book.

Would someone please still me what’s going on?  Speaking of preview mode, I can only see inside books when I’m on my PC at work.  Using IE 7 or Firefox at home I can not preview any of the books – why is that?

Thank you.

ImageWrap Cover
Ordering and Shipping

If you still have books in Blurb’s Bookstore can you now order them with the new ImageWrap covers?

I would like to order an older book with the new ImageWrap cover but didn’t see how it could be done.

$25K Book Contest
General Interest

I see the link is in the upper right hand corner but what about the three books that had been entered?  What happened to them?  The link I was speaking of was listed in the right hand margin under the All Categories but no problem.  Still what happened to the books? No longer can you see the books that had been entered. I just thought it odd they disappeared from a page that no longer exist.

Book Preview Mode - Comments
General Interest

I am currently working on a book about our two dogs (Min Pins) and have been previewing other pet books in the Book Store to get ideas.

I noticed at the bottom of the page in the left hand corner there is a little icon and when you click it on, it brings up "comments."

Please explain how this feature work. Can I leave comments regarding other book publishers work or have individuals comment on  books I have published.

Please shed some light on this for me.  Better yet put something in the Blog about it so everyone will know how to use this feature.

Thank you.

Sort By Option
BookSmart

I have Version 1.9.2.20770 and I am currently correcting so selfmade page designs I have and wonder why the "Sort By Used In Book" option does not work.

I click on it to sort my images in the order they are used in the book and nothing changes.  After I click on all the other options changes occur but when I get back to Used in Book – nothing changes!

Is this option being worked on by the technical staff for the next upgrade?
