300dpi high quality JPEGS okay for text?
BookSmart

Thanks Tony – very useful. I’ll proceed as described and hope for the best!

Do I understand correctly that PNG is a better option from PS than JPEG?

Cheers, Paul.

300dpi high quality JPEGS okay for text?
BookSmart

Hi,

I’ve designed my book in InDesign with the right page sizes and so on, with the intention of exporting each page as a 300dpi max quality JPEG and importing into BookSmart.

My question is; will this be okay for the text? I’ve got a fair amount of text on each page – will it be jagged?

I’ve had some people say it will, and some swear it won’t – what is the DEFINITIVE answer?

Cheers, P.

Gamut, Photoshop Bleeds & Color a Test Book
Tips and Tricks

Allen – I’m just preparing my first Blurb book, and I’m using an iMac 24. All the pictures will be black and white. Do you think I should adjust the pictures for brightness in the way you describe? Did you print some B&W images? Any tips? Cheers, P.

Anyway around the rigid layouts?
Tips and Tricks

You can use professional design software, like InDesign (which I use) or similar. Anything that will allow you to save each page as a 300dpi JPEG will be fine. Then you just save each page as described and paste it into a blank page of BookSmart.

BookSmark won't quit in OS X
BookSmart

Interesting Fabini… I always have a stack of other apps open. Maybe that’s the problem. However, I’m not going to quit everything before I quit BookSmart! I’ll just continue Force Quitting. It’s not a good sign for the software though.

Am I alone in finding BookSmart won’t quit in Macintosh OS 10.5.5? I have to Force Quit it every time.

Exact dimensions of 13x11 Dust Jacket, spine and flyleaves
Tips and Tricks

This does seem incredible. Sadly this service is clearly aimed at the public, not the professional. Is there a wish-list somewhere for us to petition for these improvements?

Exact dimensions of 13x11 Dust Jacket, spine and flyleaves
Tips and Tricks

I’m just producing my first book. I’m a trained designer so I’m using InDesign and importing the pages as high quality JPEGs to place in BookSmart. I got the dimensions of the pages for the 13×11 book from this site.

However – I’ve now come to make the dust jacket and I can’t find the dimensions here. I’ve got the sizes of the two cover pages themselves from BookSmart (13.2×11.1), but what about the spine and the flyleaves?

And I can’t find a template that will allow me to create plain covers.

Cheers, P.

Black and white photos have a color cast to them.
BookSmart

Thanks Lee,

So you’d recommend conversion to greyscale in PS, then conversion back to sRGB, then saving as PNG, yes?

Thanks for your help!

Black and white photos have a color cast to them.
BookSmart

I’m just about to print my first Blurb book. It’ll be B&W, the largest large format they do, and the scans have been professionally made. They are saved as RGB TIFFs. Do I understand from this thread that I should consider converting to greyscale in PhotoShop and then back to RGB, to eliminate the colour cast problems, or are TIFFs okay anyway – in other words do the problems only occur with JPEGs?

I want to try to get it right first time!

Cheers, P.
