ordering unfinished book to see how it looks
Book Design and Imaging
I did a partial soft cover version proof on my first book. I wouldn’t do it again as everything after came out OK colorwise.

Bleed photos in blurb
Book Design and Imaging
If you have critical edge data that you don’t want cut off, ignore the recommended 1/8" safe area & give yourself 1/4" of space. You’ll be happy that you did.

bleed question
Tips and Tricks
For what it’s worth, I had the opposite problem. 1/8" wasn’t enough bleed margin & I had to use 1/4" to keep critical info at the edge of the image.

Build my own book templates
Tips and Tricks
If you have a good image editor, like Photoshop, or Photoshop Elements, you can make a full bleed page sized file & put your pics & text exactly where you want them. I did most of my 11X13" book that way. Some views at www.FrankCizek.com

White type on black backgroung
Tips and Tricks
Quote: And the reason I said black was an unsuitable background is that it’s problematic when viewing the photographs, as it distorts the hues and values in the photograph. Actually, a black background has no effect, where white will tend to make the images look darker. I used black pages with white type & it looks pretty good. Mine had a lot of full page image spreads & I would agree that it isn’t something I would do with a book containing a lot of text though.

Realistic Pricing of Books
Tips and Tricks
Yes, just for the H of it I did. They wanted "their people" to redesign it & we could start for only a $20,000 investment? I don’t think so! I sell my 11X13 book for $90, & considering that I only made it so I could have one, & a few guys whose cars were featured in it could have one, I don’t mind the low sales numbers. Yesterday my doctor said he will be buying some for gifts. A partial layout is here with a link to the BS site. www.FrankCizek.com
