The bookstore site is buggy and very hard to use
General Interest

I find the bookstore site very difficult to use. I’m trying to figure out how to tell others about my books for sale and the directions I’ve received have no relavance to the menus on the site!

I cannot locate, anywhere, a Blurb menu with Your Blurb, Your Books or a Details link.

The site needs a great deal of work. For one, I’d hire a novice, give them tasks to perform, and be guided by that person’s problems in how to correct the problem parts of the site.

Blurb won't upload my finished book from Word 2010??
Book Printing

It took me a while, but I figured it out. I had to reinstall the plug-in, then reboot the computer. Still took me a couple of tries but I finally got the book to upload and I’ve ordered a couple of test copies.

Blurb won't upload my finished book from Word 2010??
Book Printing

I have the Blurb add-on for my MS Word 2010. When I click on Upload, a message tells me to save my work (which I did) and then disappears. Nothing more happens. I’m signed in to Blurb as well.

What am I doing wrong??

Make viewing and book ordering easier for non-members
Ordering and Shipping

Howdy:

I very much enjoy using Blurb and, to date (knock on wood), have never had any of the tech problems I’ve seen discussed on the various forums.

I would urge the folks at Blurb to make finding our books easier for those people who would like to order a copy. At least two individuals wanted to order books that I created from Blurb and they couldn’t find them. Now, I can’t be sure what the problem is, but it’d be simple enough for Blurb staff to bring in a non-user and while they watch tell that person to "order a book." By observing that individual’s problem the staff could figure out how to smooth out the process.

 Just a thought,

Clipped Text Warning - with NO text?!?
Book Design and Imaging

I suspect you’re getting the Clipped Text Warning because of invisible spaces. Try hitting "Control" + "A" (for select all). Then hit delete. If that doesn’t work, go to the end of your last line in the box and hit the backspace key until it won’t go any more.

Perhaps you’re using too large a size font? Hard to respond as I’m not sure what the specific problem is that you are having.

Is it me, or is the Blurb software a little unpredictable ?
Book Design and Imaging

Reading my post above let me clarify; you have to highlight two pages by left clicking on two pages while holding down the control key. That will highlight the two pages, which can then be copies (control-C) and duplicated to your hearts content (control-V).

Is it me, or is the Blurb software a little unpredictable ?
Book Design and Imaging

I enjoy making books using the program but, you are correct, the software is more then a bit buggy. To their credit the Blurb people seem to be working on upgrading the program on a regular basis. As to the twenty page issue, the answer is pretty simple. Control click on a couple of pages, click on "control-C" to copy the two pages, then click away with "control-V" to paste as many additional pages as you’d like. That’s exactly what I did on my last book of eighty pages. Very fast and simple.

 Hope that helps.

Suggestion for pic size slider to have graduations on it
Tips and Tricks

I’ve done five or six books now and have learned the advantage of using either two pages, putting a single image across them or even using two or more squares on a page with a single image "bled" across them. Not too difficult to do but I would suggest the technique would be easier to accomplish if the slider bar used to control/measure the picture size had some graduations on it. Currently I carefully count the number of times I increase the size of each image to match them up, but little marks on the slider bar would be nice.

Just a thought!

When that happens to me I change the font on the page to a smaller size.

images darker in booksmart display than in photo shop display.
Book Design and Imaging

I’ve put out three photo books so far and I’ve found that, as a rule, my images come out darker in print then on my computer screen. I’m going to try and lighten photos a bit in the future when making a photo book. I shoot RAW (PP using Canon’s DPP software), so it won’t be a major problem. For the record, I’m using Windows XP on a Samsung 204B (uncalibrated) monitor.

Locking Spreads - Why?
Book Design and Imaging

I find the locking of spread command use confusing. What do I accomplish when I lock my spread? I’ve found that the spreads can migrate even when locked (say one page moving a page over, thereby negating a long worked on two page single photo setup).

Should I just leave my pages unlocked?

Clipped or not Clipped????
BookSmart

If the folks at Blurb would consider giving us the option to see our spaces and paragraph marks (as you can in MS Word and other programs) that would go a long way in dealing with this matter.

 Just a thought.

How Long Does It Take YOU to design a book?
Book Design and Imaging

DJ:

It’s hard to answer your question with any sort of accuracy. I’ve put out four (five if you count a hard cover version of one of them) books so far, and it’s becoming easier each time. As you mentioned, I would like more options in regard photo (and text) layouts. None the less, the one book I’ve shown to folks so far has been received with  positive responses. I’ve used one other book publisher (MyPublisher) and have found Blurb to offer more versitility in their formatting and options then the other company. Also, I’ve found Blurb customer service (responding to a question) very good.

Hope this helps,

Just checked the "grainy" JPEG image I’m referring to. It’s over 10 megapixels in size!

Funny, but a number of images I put into my newest book a couple of hours ago seem very grainy. All my JPEGs are very high quality (I convert them from RAW). Something going on with the software perhaps??

Sizing photos in Booksmart
Book Design and Imaging

Matthew:

One thing I’ve learned with BookSmart is that I often need some additional "space" around my images in order to have them fit properly into the various shapes of the supplied frames. Remember, once placed inside a frame you can both increase and decrease the size of your images, as well as move them about in their frames. I don’t think I’ve ever been able to just drag and drop a photo in a frame without this additional manipulation (ordered my 4th book…).

As an aside, your JPEG images are already in an aspect ratio of 3:2. The frames you’re trying to shoehorn them into likely are not. Just as an example, here are some size images and their actual aspect ratios:

4X6"=3:2

5X7"=7:5

8X10"=5:4

Square=1:1

There are dozens of these various aspect ratios out there. What I’m trying to say is, you’ll have to be flexible when creating a photobook because of this.

Hope this helps,

Updating Book Once It Has Been Printed
Tips and Tricks

 >>>Enjoyed the Wellfleet walk. Cape Cod area I assume.

Yes. Small town on the lower Cape (between Truro and Eastham). If you’d like to see more photos of the town go to the Wellfleet town site

and click on Slideshows at the lower left.  Enjoy.

Updating Book Once It Has Been Printed
Tips and Tricks

P, that seems awfully complicated. I save my books on a couple of added hard drives I have. Should I wish to make a change, I’d simply change the name of the book, import it to Blurb, edit as desired, delete the old version and order the new one. Perhaps I’m missing something here (and I know I’ve oversimplified the process), but that’s how I’d take a shot at a revision should I require one.

Controlling Ornament Command in Locked Spreads
Tips and Tricks

I’ve created four books to date so am gradually becoming more comfortable with the software. I noticed that in order to remove an ornament from one page of a locked spread you have to first unlock the spread. Why would you want to do this? So the ornament does not show up on a full bleed photo on one of the pages.

If the spread is locked, when you turn the ornament command either on or off, both pages are impacted. To control each page separately you have to first unlock a locked spread, make the change to add or remove the desired ornament, then relock the spread if so desired.

Text handling in BookSmart
Book Design and Imaging

I think folks would find it much easier to work with text if they could see spaces, paragraph marks, and other what are now "invisible" formatting indicators. That would certainly help when getting a yellow warning indicator when it’s clear that the text in the allotted space should fit nicely.

Just a thought,

Completed book in hardcover format but really wanted softcover copies as...
BookSmart

Mark from Blurb answered my question. He told me to go into Book Smart, click on ‘File’ then ‘New Book with this Photo Library’.

That put all my images into my "new" book project. Saved me lots of work.

Thanks all,
